"today in the bay's" ginger conejero saab is in the south bay tracking the steps you can take to just make sure you are ready for any possible flooding. >> and mike inouye is tracking the slick roads we're talking about. we're going to see a lot of rain in the next coming days as well. meteorologist vianey arana is tracking this atmospheric river event. >>> and this is the first storm we will see in a series of them, as you mentioned, in the upcoming week. we have our storm ranger scanning the skies. petaluma seeing some of the light rain, light to moderate at times. where you see the yellow and orange glow is where we see some of the heavier pockets. zooming us in closer to san francisco you can see really coming down right now in hayward, danville, some that have rain in the bay area, across the region. san jose we'll start to notice that picking up. why? this line of showers here will continue to push on through. that will create some strong pockets for the morning commute. here is a look at what we'll be monitoring the next couple of hours as the system continues to push through.

>> it's covering all of the bay area except for the tri-valley as well as the south bay. seeing rain pouring over the north bay and heavy pockets have lasted for the last couple of hours, and some areas like mill valley seeing the rain picking up right now as well as novato. it's raining in san francisco. across the bay over towards oakland and hayward it's raining. and then moving down to palo alto, and will be raining in sunnyvale in the next few minutes. as the rain moves from north to south, we could see half an inch to inch and a half of rain totals today. there could be potentials of isolated flooding with the leaves in the drains. i will be watching that, and we will talk about heavy sierra snow coming up. >>> you have to fill up, right, kari, because you don't want to get stuck in the rain or snow. chains are required on i-80. and then the arco on branam, the lowest price reported on gas buddy at 4.01. and then mill rally reporting it at 4.09, and then down to 3.89 in concord. traffic is flowing south from the north. we are looking at no major problems for the sout

the bay bridge moves clearly. we'll see how the business world is this friday with silvana. >>> good morning. i'm silvana henao from cnbc. wall street is set to open higher as investors look ahead to new inflation data. the markets closer higher yesterday with the s&p 500 breaking a five-day losing streak while the nasdaq was up more than 1%. despite those gains the dow, nasdaq and s&p are on track to post losses for the week. in focus today the producer price index which tracks the cost of making goods, prices are expected to have risen at a slower pace last month versus october. costco reporting quarterly results that missed analyst forecasts as surging inflation is forcing fewer big ticket items to be purchased. walmart and target have noted a shift in consumer spending as food and gas prices remain high. shoppers are giving more priority to food and other necessities. costco tends to attract higher income shoppers than big box rivals because people need to have enough money to buy in bulk even if prices are low

but a light rain elsewhere around the bay area. but it is going to pick up tonight as the main cold front begins to move through. so we've seen some issues with some flooding already. i think that will only be exacerbated overnight tonight with some very heavy rainfall. still looking at maybe 3, maybe 6 inches of rain across coastal mountains. if this storm gets hung up at all, it could be a lot more that we could be talking about 8 plus inches of rain across some of the mountain tops in the north bay and also into the santa cruz mountains. so watching this very closely, especially along the russian river, i think most the main river staying within their banks, thurs forecast for a possible minor flooding near hopple and alpng the russian river. some of the minor tributaries around the bay are i think that will be the biggest concern into tomorrow morning. and the goal along with that now, wind advisories being posted been watching. some of those wind gusts begin to pick up. we've had some gusts already over 50 miles per hour in the

the rest of the bay, everything south of marin looking great. so is the east bay. o the closure for southbound 101. still, again, a rock slide comes down just past the rodeo exit and so folks are forced off at the marin exit as you see the backup and closure marked on the map. you do seep the slowing starts and ends farther north. i believe, again, folks are getting here to the city streets and taking bridgeway through sausalito. it turns to alexander at the very end, speed sensors showing about 10 miles per hour now as you get back over to highway 101. there is a park and ride there. you might be able to get through the city and enter the freeway south of the closure. caltrans talks about another hour and a half before it started. they can arrive on scene and maybe get an assessment of one they can reopen lanes. the bay bridge toll plaza and the backup and highway 4 with some slowing. >> thank you, mike. >>> happening now a day of celebration for catholics around the world. this is our lady of guadalupe feast day. it started overnight including a gathering at our l

if you zoom it out through the south bay, no rain coming down. afternoon, a break in the rain remains. through 1:00, we will catch a window of opportunity for a little sunshine, and light scattered activity right now on the san francisco camera. it's about 49 degrees. we will see that rain make its return around the 3:00 mark, becoming more widespread with pockets of rain at times. in through your friday morning commute, so friday morning's commute we will still see heavy but not as heavy or crazy. by saturday, that will change. speaking of the rain -- >> yeah, i want to continue with the camera. chp is preparing for that next wave of rain that you are talking about. what i mean by that, i see in their computer dispatch system, they are creating more entries where they expect flooding. we see a lot of traffic on the richmond bridge. highway 37, slowing as well. the two usual suspects we have are showing slowing on the decline for west 80. oyster point north of sfo, a crash blocks two right lanes but traffic is so light there's no slowing into sfo

"today in the bay's" marianne favro shows us the impact. >> take a look at this flooding here on this bike path near campbell. while the rain certainly made it difficult for bikers today, it was drivers who felt the biggest impact. heavy rains and strong winds took down this tree off of highway 680 in san jose. traffic slowed to a crawl as crews used a chainsaw to remove the trunk. in milpitas, a storm-related power outage impacting more than 2,000 pg&e customers caused traffic signals to go dark. as a result, it was slow and go for drivers, as they treated each intersection as a four-way stop. the rain also created big cleanup jobs, especially after the lark avenue on-ramp off of highway 17 flooded. th

flood watches do go into effect starting in the north bay and then extended for the rest of the bay area by 10:00 p.m. i want to give you a heads-up about the long-range outlook. if you had any plans to travel to l.a., anything along southern california, the impacts will extend that far even up through portland and seattle. monday we get a break sunday into monday this is good. we need those breaks. they are critical in allowing time for the ground to dry out before the next system moves? the next big system heading wednesday into thursday and it looks like it could be a widespread storm with more snow on top of that. this could bring, by the time the next storm arrives january 7th, an additional 5 to 6 inches, potentially even 7 inches to the north bay, the ben lomond area. at this point the potential for instant run-off will be extremely high. monday and tuesday we'll get a little bit of that light period of rain. some good news the rain is going to clear out just in time for the new year's celebrations and will allow for a beautiful, sunny sunday. a look at how traffic is doing with m

the south bay, the north bay being the first spots to be drying out this morning.t of the day looks really sunny. now you sunshine is going to be warm, right? that cold front keeping us cold all day long in tonight's with clear skies and that cold air mass firmly in place. we're about to have some freezing temperatures with lows dropping into the upper 20's. a freeze warning will take effect this evening for a whole lot of the bay lasting into the start of tomorrow. tomorrow will prove to be a dry one before more rain and snow on into the weekend on saturday and sunday. as far as rainfall totals go from the storm, most of us will stay below an inch. coastal areas, though, could see upwards of an inch areas like mount tam in the santa cruz mountains could see upwards of 2 inches of rainfall from the system. now, winter storm warning staying in effect through tomorrow morning at 10:00am up in the sierra nevada. white out conditions blowing drifting snow just overall low visibility on highway 50 and i-80 snow piling up up to one to 3 feet and is low in elevation. is 4

starts in the north bay spreads out across the rest of the bay. the mild sector for those temperatures. but tomorrow is a little bit of a different story in the impact will be different as well. so there you see the heavy rains up in the north bay. what's left over from the overnight is down here in the south bay. start to break up a little bit there. extending off to mount hamilton, though. and of course, the santa cruz mountains. so this is what it looks like now. just starting to slide south getting looks like almost to the golden gate bridge as we speak. this will give moderate rains too much of the bay. but because of all of this, as you heard camilla earlier with the showers, there's a flood advisory that has been posted up here to 11 o'clock. this covers northern marion through sonoma county, napa. they didn't say solano county, but looks like it's getting awfully close the county border. but just keep in mind there you'll be impacted by this as well. that's again, until 11 because of that time, the rain to parts now it's hard for them to p

we are still cool in the north bay. san francisco with mid-50s and back down into the upper 30s and low 40s for tonight. it won't be as cold. we're going to see more of the same heading into the end of the week. now we're seeing this weak storm system passing just to our north. and then that looks to be the pattern with the storms going up and over a ridge of high pressure. a couple of spotty sprinkles. the possibility of a couple of storm systems moving in for the last week of the year possibly on tuesday and then again next thursday and it could be quite a bit more rain than what we're expecting coming in before the end of the week. it looks like it's mostly to the north of us. ukiah could see a quarter inch of rain, but the rest of the bay area not much in the way of any real measurement of rain and then going into next week once again looking better with a couple of storm systems passing by that could in total bring about three-quarters of an inch of rain for oakland and san francisco and much higher rainfall totals

. >> and take a look at what we're seeing right now in the north bay. we've got the cloudy conditions but the cool front that's already started to sweep through the overnight hours will be heavily focused on the north bay, with scattered showers continuing through today. if you had plans to head down through san jose for christmas in the park, 48 degrees right now. the good news is the focus won't be as heavy in the south bay today. you will have a chance to maybe visit down there without needing a heavy jacket, just a light coat. let's talk about where that cold front is right now. satellite and radar, this is in the past three hours. you can see the line of showers that pass through. if i zoom this in to put the focus on san rafael, you can see a couple of light cells pushing through, through san jose, the south bay. the good thing about this second system from this weekend is that it's not going to be as widespread, and it's not going to bring as heavy of rain, but we need any chance of rain we can get. so let's talk about what's ahead. tonight into m

let's start with the north bay. we've been seeing some on and off showers there novato some light rainfall for you right now. heavy rainfall in northern portions of napa county symon back out a little bit quieter across the peninsula in the east bay. we do have this area of rainfall, especially around alum rock just east of san jose. we go south of the south bay. that's where we're seeing our heaviest of rain. it's really stretch from watsonville over towards hollister in gilroy. some heavy rain and some strong winds along with that. and if we zoom out across the bay area, snowfall in the sierra, nevada falling in pretty heavy north of lake tahoe. watch out for isolated a pop-up showers, especially in the north bay this afternoon could even hear roll of thunder or 2 in their most of the rest of the bay area stays pretty quiet up until sunset tonight. we'll see another line of rain pushing in across the region. current temperatures are mostly in the upper 40's to low 50's. it's a cool start to this day but not an over

let's head over to "today in the bay's" ginger conejero saab in the north bay with how residents are cted to prepare. ginger? >> reporter: kari, as you mentioned, it is dry here in mill valley where the dry weather -- or the break from the rain means people have more time to prepare as the storm approaches this weekend. not just people who live in the north bay but also santa rosa fire preparing for what the storm might bring. they've tweeted warnings and reminders at the start of this weekend's storm, they are monitoring the storm to see if additional efforts are needed to alert residents in areas above santa rosa's rincon valley or the east side of town. what they are bracing for later tonight and into tomorrow is the wind which could affect trees and power lines and the holiday spirit. >> the decorations are another concern. there's a lot of outdoor inflatables, decorations ahead of the holidays. we're asking residents to secure those so they don't do damage on your property or a neighbor's. >> reporter: now this santa rosa man is taking those warnings seriously especially since he

low temperatures in the north bay dropping into the middle and upper 20s. other temperatures bottoming out in the lower 30s and middle and upper 30s around the bay and along the coast, which is cold enough, but it is chilly enough for a freeze warning in effect for the santa clara kills. eastern santa clara county, and most of the north bay, where temperatures are in the middle and upper 20s to around 30 degrees but if you have any plans that survived frosty conditions we have had multiple times this year, and those inside, you may have already lost them. make sure will have a warm place to snuggle up for the next couple of nights. temperatures that one much, there is only so much warming we can do with shorter daylight hours and a low sun angle in the month of december, some temperatures will end up 5 to 10 degrees below average but most of us in the middle 50s in the next chance for showers to roll in this weekend, this is not going to be torrential, it will not rain everywhere all the time, it is just an unsettled pattern that demands maximum flex abilit
