>> from the bay area's local news station. you're watching kron. 4 news at >> now at 5, a powerful winter storm is here. it's the first of a round of storms headed our way over the next few days. it's already caused downed trees, power outages and a dangerous commute here in the bay area. thank you for joining us here in companies at 5. i'm noelle bellow, i'm ken wayne. tonight. we have team coverage of the atmospheric river that's moving through the bay area. are theresa standing by in santa rosa? >> one of the hardest areas hit by the storm. but first, let's go to our chief meteorologist lawrence karnow at the weather center. lawrence, here we go. we're really just getting into the storm system now. we've had the rain out ahead of the main front. well, these next few hours going to get rough around the bay area. we've already seen some problems out on the road, just a vote from people hydroplaning out there and sliding on all the wet pavement outside. you can see toward the golden gate bridge. you've got all that rain on the

the bay. we'll take you on a tour of the bay area. you can see heavy downpours making their way into palo alto and los altos and across the bridge over to the east bay, fremont getting heavier rain. a little break in the action for the moment in downtown san francisco and oakland, but more of these showers and thunderstorms will develop as we head through the rest of tonight and throughout the day tomorrow. the white box outlines an urban and small stream flood advisory, a couple of those in effect for marin, sonoma and napa county, showed you the high water concerns around windsor, mark west creek one of the places more prone to localized flooding when we have a lot of rain in a fairly short amount of time. everything is moving south to north across the region. actual thunderstorms still ongoing through the central valley. let's switch over to futurecast and track the rain as we head through the rest of tonight. it will not rain everywhere all the time, but there will still be scattered showers. we'll see more of that developing as we

water all around the bay area. the problem is now maybe some flooding. you've got that water that's rolling down. the hill is now on. >> it's heading into many the screams and creeks around the bay area. so here we go as we head throughout the night tonight, looking out towards sfo, very wet. there's been numerous delays out of sfo, still looking at delays of 29 minutes out there right now. no delays and oakland or san jose. but that rain really coming down, especially in the afternoon, got going and a heavy in spots out there and a little continue to be that way. in fact, probably a little more intense. we've got % the main cold front that is just now making its way in the north bay and stretching further south. you can kind of see that line of storms out there right now on the san francisco. we've had some downpours still seeing some of that. the parts, the eastern half of san francisco stretching across the bridge there. the further south, more rain and a half moon on terror. also in the south bay. you're getting lots of rain now on to milpitas and san

here's a live look outside of the road conditions around the bay area. n see it's dry it out substantially. >> traffic light heading to the bay bridge on the richmond. sandra fell bridge and the golden gate a little bit heavier on the san mateo bridge at this hour. we sure could use to break. and here's a look at traffic conditions right now near the san francisco bay. >> bridge also, you see a lot of green there. that's a good sign when it comes to traffic. chief meteorologist lawrence karnow here with the details are as manic came down car. yeah, i really did. especially the afternoon that system rolling on through and it was dumping. >> all around the bay area making a dangerous out on the roadways. a re briefly have flash flood warnings even in downtown san francisco. even see that happen very often. but here we are right now. the clouds begin to park just a little bit. we're getting a little break in the rain. we're not done entirely. we've still got a little more shower activity to go. but you can see the numerous showers and thunderstorms rolling i

and you can see the coverage just kind of expanding over the bay area. lots of lightrillionain reports, lots of moderate rain reports. i did see some heavy rain up in the north bay, closer to santa rosa. also right around napa, completely covered from san francisco to oakland to san ramon and livermore, and then down in the south bay. so more development in the in the santa cruz mountains, closer to san jose and morgan hill, with our radar coverage. here is the forecast model. you can see what we're watching in the next few hours. this intense band of yellows and reds. this will gradually move across the bay area. this is 6:00 this evening. if this were to stall out, there's always a chance that could really bring in some problems. so this is 6:00 this evening. this is 8:00. the focus could be in parts of the east bay out toward the livermore valley and the south bay. and then it's still raining at 11:00, but we will gradually see those intense rainfall rates back off. but between now and then we are talking about rainfall intensity really ramping up. we'

to the bay area. tomorrow the president is due to come to san francisco and the los altos hills for campaign stops. congresswoman nancy pelosi is hosting the san francisco event, and before he comes to the bay area, mr. biden will be in los angeles for a campaign event. so far, president biden has outraised donald trump on the campaign trail by about $13 million, as well. republican presidential candidate nikki haley is making a final push for support in her home state of south carolina. the early balloting is underway and voters go to the polls saturday. nikki haley held a rally in the city of camden. donald trump has remained popular in south carolina since his 2016 primary victory there. in that state. still, nikki haley is trying to win support and making the case. she is the best candidate to defeat president biden in the general election. >> in every one of the polls, trump loses to biden by five points by seven points on his best day. its margin of error. i'm in every one of those same general

. >> one-two punch of the storm underway around the bay area. gusts up to 40 miles per hour around san jose and around napa, peak gusts above 50 miles per hour this morning. so the wind sustained 20 to 30 around the bay area, and we're seeing some league rain rates around the santa cruz mountains, moving south to north. this will be the pattern of the day, as the storm is aiming in on california. this is what is unique about this storm. this is the area of low pressure. instead of being part of north, will approach the north bay coastline. so that will keep the heavy rain at times ongoing off and on throughout the day, and the chance of severe thunderstorms from lunchtime into the afternoon as we head towards the evening. most of the heavier rain will move off towards the east. the wind has been strong this morning. peak of the wind speed, late morning to mid afternoon. in the evening, the high-wind warnings are expected to drop by 10:00 tonight. you see the wind speeds starting to come down as we come down towards morning. coming up, more about

high temperatures for the rest of the bay area on thursday. temperatures reaching only the upper 50s on the warm side of the spectrum. 58 degrees in san jose. the warm spot across the bay area or really the least cool spot. most of our temperatures reaching up into the low to mid-50s by about 4 to 6 degrees below normal for this time of the year. only 53 degrees along the coast at half moon bay. and the average high is 6 o degrees in the beginning of february. temperatures in the north bay are also along the cool side. generally running in the low 50s. these are the coolest temperatures that we have in the whole seven-day forecast. let's take a look at that seven-day outlook. the first day of the seven-day forecast. that's it for the scattered showers as we dry out for friday over the weekend and into the first half of next week. as the dry weather will continue, temperatures are gradually going to warm up. back up to close to average over the weekend. the start next week around 60 degrees across the board with low to mid-60s becoming common by

. >> or any part of the bay area, for that matter. it has been a weird weather day for the 1st day of february. look at first alert doppler and we have scattered shower activity. that's not weird. we've had a couple of thunderstorms. that's unusual, but a tornado touching down in rural sonoma county. let's look at the video of the tornado touching down near two rock which is southwest of rohnert park and northwest of petaluma. fortunately it's in a sparsely populated part of sonoma county, but that is a tornado hitting the ground. this is video courtesy of "the press democrat," somebody johnny on the spot capturing that video and spreading it around. let's look again at first alert doppler and where the tornado occurred. we'll zoom in for a closer look where this happened in rural sonoma county. there is a flood advisory in effect for that location. let's go over to our floor map and i can give you a 3d perspective where this occurred. we have to walk up to the north bay and it is the hilly terrain that favors development of this type

in the sierra with one of the strongest storm systems we have seen is also bringing us rain in the bay area. we are starting to see these cloudy skies filled the bay with light, scattered showers trickled in. all throughout this afternoon, that frontal band moves throughout the bay area, producing a quarter inch of rain in the northbay. we continue to see this trend develop as we head into the evening hours tonight. we have a couple of wet days ahead of us. that major storm system starts to move its way into the pacific northwest . that same storm system is the reason why there is a blizzard warning for our friends in the sierra with snow levels from 5000 feet and above, getting closer to 10 feet of snow. this is a very strong storm system. avalanches are a concern with wind gusts expected to hit around 100 miles per hour. there is lots to break apart. we will talk more about the in just a bit. >>> for people who are already in the sierra, you better have stocked up on supplies. we sent our kelsi thorud to truckee where people were out and about preparing. >> people living in the higher ele

more scattered showers popping up around the bay area. now likely see some of that continuing ominous looking storm out there in the middle of the pacific, although not much that can impact a bay area tomorrow. we've got one last little wave of moisture bring a couple of scattered pop up showers around the bay area. nothing that's going to be a rain out. but we'll see some of that rain popping up around the bay area, especially over the mountain tops as we head in toward thursday. we catch a break looking good friday, looking good. just some passing clouds low. just kind of spinning off the coastline. maybe bringing us a chance of a few scattered showers as we head in towards sunday. but overall, i think the pattern is going to be drying out here in the next couple days and probably in the next week, too. but yeah, we've got a chance of more rain on the rise now after that. but we've got least a nice break to settle things down. let the creeks and streams began to flow just a bit. looks like more sunshine. a couple rainbows by tomorrow aft

and this year, a 2 around the bay area. we have some more scattered showers popping up and you saw thunderstorms trying to make their way on through. never quite got going. but still, that's a showers popping up around the bay area. but nice glimpse of sunshine in between those raindrops still. yeah, we're watching for some flo ding in that continues in the north bay and they've just extended this advisory. again, you're looking at mark west creek, also a green valley creek. those creeks right now are currently having some issues with flooding, minor flooding along those creeks. i think by early tomorrow morning that should come to an end. in fact, the time we wake up the flooding should have ended. then we'll get a little bit of a break in the stormy pattern. so that's a nice sight to see. now we have had all that rain around the bay area and that it's going to give rise to some patchy, dense fog. so dense fog advisory in solano county, but do expect to see some of that dense fog in some of the north and the east bay valley

>> from the bay area's local news station. we now with breaking news. >> that breaking news is in palo alto tonight. police are on the scene of a deadly crash. thanks for joining us tonight on kron. 4 news at 11. i'm grant lotus and i'm noelle bellow. police say that crash happened on embarcadero road between middlefield road and walnut drive that portion of embarcadero is closed tonight in both directions. police say they will not be releasing any other details until tomorrow. again, this is a deadly crash there. we'll keep you updated on air and online. our other top story tonight is the weather. relentless san francisco's airport seeing more than 500 delays today. kron 4 sarah stinson reports now from sfo. >> there have been some major wind gusts here at sfo. i spoke with some people getting off of the plane and they said it was a rough landing. as for people were trying to leave this airport, will they're fighting their frustrations. checking the departure time only to see that it keeps getting pushed back. just really wind

our timeline forward into the early afternoon, rain returns to the north bay and then also sweeping through much of the rest of the bay area by 3:00 to 4:00 with that chance of thunderstorms. we are watching out for all of that and the impacts. let's head over to today in the bay's bob redell live in fremont at alameda creek. >> reporter: yeah, the alameda creek behind me and is expected to crest around 7 feet, and that's below the flood stage of 9 feet. if it did hit that, it would flood over the street but that's not expected to happen, which is a good thing. this is new video into our news room. this is along the russian river, again in hopland in mendocino valley. there are no reports of damage. in guerneville, meanwhile, water levels are not expected to peak for another 18 or so hours. it should still be about seven feet, below flood stage. that's good news. and i just checked with the national weather service, and the waterway expected to crest several feet below flood stage. >> rain is coming in. we don't want to wiped up like secondhand land in 2005 and some of the other businesses from my childhood and stuff. >> w

as you can see over the over the bay area. and of course, the focus of the heavy rain has been up in the north bay. reports of you can see at 101 cars hydroplaning in 8 to 10in of water out toward concord or martinez. reports of some standing water as well. so this is the active radar for this evening up in the north bay. we could see some convective elements and what that means that could kind of enhance the rainfall intensity as these cells move onshore. it's a more coverage in the south bay closer to san jose. and also the santa cruz mountains. so we're talking about heavy rain, the short terme. what about your thursday forecast? looks like we're still talking about some scattered rain showers. we'll have more on that with your update in just a few minutes. >> all right. thank you so much, mark. well now we want to go to our crystal bailey. as i mentioned she's live in oakland with a look at the conditions there. crystal >> well, heather, it's been very wet and very windy earlier today. i could barely hang on to my umbrella

the south bay venue. one of many comedy clubs across the country for the new york native performed over several decades before passing away at the age of 76 bay area. comedian say they'll forever missed the magic he created on stage. >> stay of his passing. i just got sad. it was one in a million and all of us loved and revered him. and yes, that's another big loss for us in comedy this year. curtis matthews owns the san francisco ca many college. he started his comedy career in los angeles around the time lewis was becoming famous in the 80's. the 2 ran into each other a few times. and matthew says many looked up to him as a comedian. >> so all of us were like, oh, my god, if i could just have like a quarter of kind of talent. >> i would be happy. matthew says he's grateful he was able to see lewis performance. san jose improv a couple years back. one of his last appearances he was cleaning up his life and getting stuff together. stopped drink and he looked great. lewis is known for exploring his neuroses in his stand-up comedy while dressed in all black, but well written jokes. but just the whole character that he didn't nobody else could do. wh

for the rest of the bay area, the amounts are more modest. maybe about a quarter of an inch of rain so far. more rain crossing over the bay bridge and towards the east bay. a look at first alert doppler, continuing to work further and further to the east. about to move in as well. this is the last band of intense rainfall accompanying the system called a narrow cold rain band that's ahead of the actual cold front driving all this as they push off to the east. we'll see the showers quieting down throughout the overnight and early morning hours. a slight chance for a pop-up shower tomorrow. a winter storm warning in effect through 4:00 tomorrow in red. a winter weather advisory at lake level around tahoe where they are expecting several inches of snow. a couple feet of total snowfall in the higher elevations and the wind gusts, dangerous travel conditions along u.s. 50 and i-80. looking outside right now, the heaviest rain is pushing to the east. some visibility is improving a little bit. temperatures anywhere from 51 degrees at the moment in sa

here's a view over the bay area. ain coming off the coastline there near half moon bay. we've got the santa cruz mountains, the central bay, not too bad. in fact, the east bay shore seeing a little bit of a lull. we've got to some drizzle out there, but just lightrillionain reported there as we look towards san francisco. so pocket of moderate rain beginning to enter the golden gate bridge and into the north bay, where we have some pretty good rain falling over mount tam and our coastal range there, and then off to the north bay, santa rosa, hillsboro area. seeing a good amount of rain at this hour, we have the winds gusting strong across the entire bay area. sfo reporting wind gusts to 45. san jose reporting wind gusts to 39. shifting into the north bay and napa airport reporting a wind gusts to 45. and in our hills, mount diablo has been blowing strongly as well. right now, reporting winds to 64mph. so power outages toppled trees, hazardous conditions crossing the bridges. all this, of course, coming along with this

the east bay by 10:00 to 11:00 this morning. at any point we could see the thunderstorms popping up anywhere around the bay area. nce will be just to our east. most likely over parts of the sacramento and san joaquin valley. that's going to continue into this evening. but we're expecting some waves of heavy rain and potentially some small hail. i'll be talking more about that and looking at what's ahead for tomorrow as well. mike, we're checking back at the bridge. >> yeah, kari, i thought there might be something going on eastbound. then it calmed down. i saw the flashing lights. they progressed from mid span past our camera in the last two minutes here. they're on the hayward side. there is something going on. perhaps debris. no incidents reporting eastbound on highway 92. no incidents reported on chp. but we clearly saw something going on the live camera. again that, cleared over to the hayward side. a smooth drive on both bridges. watch those winds. could get gusty at times. there is an issue there. on highway 84, that's where the reports. >> referee: -- that's where the mud slippage s trying to get the maps

we're waking up to cloudy skies around the bay area. beautiful at times through oakland and walnut creek. some of that fog is limiting visibility for anyone trying to get out there runninger rapids. walnut creek, concord, the north bay and south bay limiting visibility to morgan hill to less than a mile. as we take a look at where storm number two is, very impressive on satellite and radar right now, as it takes that cinnamon roll shape this morning. it is associated with a line of rain and thunderstorms already developing offshore. as we go on into 10:00 a.m. today, for the next couple of days, the entire bay area will be placed under that flood watch. so we have to keep an eye on rivers and potential of shallow landslides and potential of severe thunderstorms. so get out the door before noon, especially if you live in the north bay. we will be watching severe thunderstorm potential. many people in the north bay gearing up for the next storm to hit in the next couple of the hours. tom jenson is in santa rosa where sandbag locations are
