a deadly accident on the bay bridge is blocking lanes in the eastbound direction of the bay bridge. is fatality. >> jon travel has been covering that for us. john, what are you seeing out there? and fortunately, reyna 2 fatalities involving a 2 vehicles. the first vehicle was parked on the bridge itself. >> and chp responded toe reports that another vehicle actually collided with that stalled vehicle at a high rate of speed when chp it does is confirm that there's 2 fatalities. there is one lane open heading eastbound. but of course, you can see all those emergency vehicle still there. the cleanup work as well as just getting everything back in order may take a few more minutes. so as of right now, expect delays as you're heading eastbound. a bit of good news for commuters heading into the city, though. this is the counter commute direction. so for those of you that are heading from the east bay into san francisco, as you can see on the upper deck of the bay bridge. things are actually moving along, just fine up there. so this is really only having an impact on the lower deck operat

traveling out of san francisco over towards the east bay, you are certainly going to see some brake lights building coming out of the city getting on to the bay bridge itself. again, this is near treasure island. once you are past that, you will be fine the rest of the way over into the oakland east bay area. but in the meantime, alternate routes you can use b.a.r.t. potentially as an alternate. you can always use the golden gate bridge and work your way around and come through the richmond-san rafael rand. i would not do until things get a little bit busier and right now you will make it through with about a 15 minute delay at this point. but again, only one lane open because of that deadly crash. and again, at the bay bridge toll plaza, different perspective. this is the commute heading into the city. that's still moving at really good pace. >>> let's take a live look right now at a snow-covered i-80 in the sierra this morning. this is a view of the eastbound traffic lanes there at soda springs and right now chains are required on 80 and on highway # after the rainstorm that rolled across the bay area yesterday turned into a blizzard in the mounta

>>> yeah, this is the most severe here on the lower deck of the bay bridge. is view is east bay as the cars are jammed up getting out of san francisco approaching what looks like just one lane all the way over on the left. all these folks have to shift and merge. there must be another lane, and on our side of the screen where from the photographer is there's one lane, and there is a van there and perhaps that's the coroner. as we zoom in towards the city, looks like no problem getting into san francisco. it's out of san francisco, and the lower deck is where the deadly crash happened, and there's a mini cooper involved in this and a few other vehicles. our view from the san francisco camera is showing all the activity. as we move into the shot i will show you, this is where we saw the activity. the camera we shot is over here behind all of these vehicles, and there were other vehicles pulling up. looks like there's more service going on and more teams in the area, and we could have a change to the situation over the next half hour. we are watching, and so far

lanes are still blocked and this is the lower deck of bay bridge near treasure island. this is countercommute but lanes are still closed at least two of them and traffic is bottlenecking through there as you head over towards the east bay. we'll get an update on the backup in just a second. but i did get some new information in. two cars were involved in this crash. one vehicle had stalled out on the bridge and there were two people inside. they did call 911 which was the right thing to do. but unfortunately, they were hit by a second vehicle and that is what caused the crash and again, two people did die in this accident. so be extra careful as you hit the roadways and definitely be safe out there. watch your speed and just be really cautious. here's a look at what the backup is like based on our maps and you can see it's very slow westbound as you get on the lower deck going to the east bay area. definitely seeing the back p well into san francisco at this point. but seeing that lanes are starting to clear is a good sign in the sense they should have lanes opened up pr

we have a shot here live of the bay bridge. you can see the flashing lights on the lower deck that eastbound 80. >> where there was a fatal accident in the dark this morning is around 04:00am. there was a small car, a mini cooper that was disabled stalled. we don't know. but it was sitting in the right lane and a truck came driving along and hit it that injured the driver of the truck. that was just a pickup truck, not a big rig. the pickup truck was the driver was injured. but there are 3 people in that mini cooper 2 were killed and a 3rd was also seriously injured. so they've got the corner out there. they have police investigators. those lanes are shut down. as you can see, affecting traffic going from san francisco to the east bay. but there commute direction on top of the bridge you can see seems to be running pretty smoothly at exactly. let's go ahead and get a look at that map pulled up right now on your screen. you can see the backup there on the eastbound side. lower deck. it's about 2 miles long. so again, that's how f

here's a live look at the bay bridge toll plaza. and quiet and in fact if you are getting on any of the bay area freeways with the exception of parts of 880, it actually looks really good this morning. so easy ride out of marin county, the north bay. the south bay. the peninsula. even parts of the east bay. where we have a bit of a hiccup is that drive along southbound 880. this is the biggest spotlight now. the biggest trouble spot. southbound 880 right around a. street. one lane blocked because of a crash. so backing up a little bit as you come off of the 238 castro valley y connector from 880 getting on to 580. some red popping up there. that means under 25 miles per hour. but it's just for a few minutes there. still very early and less volume on the roadways right now n. is you are really not going to see a lot of brake lights or issues and in fact if your ride is the golden gate bridge this morning, plenty of time for the extra cup of coffee. nicole? >>> all right, time now 5:19. taking a live look from oakland at the coliseum.

we've already got the backup building at the bay bridge. g lights there in the background. so all looking to see if that's causing any problems or delays and looks like a tow truck is on scene. maybe a broken down vehicle stuck on the shoulder there. but doesn't look like it's causing any major issues for anyone commuting through there but certainly something is going on the not too far from the shoulder there as you come into the toll plaza there. all right, taking a look at traffic elsewhere. i want to show you some travel times this morning. looking pretty good overall. taking 80 to the bay bridge you are doing fine. no delays or issues right now and highway 4, 101. all clear. 580 a few brake lights here and there working westbound. it is getting a little bit slow coming out of tracy getting into the altamont pass. you can see traffic is definitely sluggish there. and we do have reports of a crash working your way to the dublin interchange just past that point. just a heads-up. everything else though looks really good so far. so our bay a

bay bridge had one problem. after thee bridge itself was very slow because of a truck accident. it's getting better now, but right now we still have a bigger backup at the bay bridge toll plaza westbound 580. castro valley. we had a crash westbound 580 at castro valley boulevard. uh, no injuries there, but it was a hit and run. i'm also looking at the dublin grade here. you can see some slow traffic on 680 heading south towards sunol and on 880 heading south. uh to hayward. not that much, but eastbound 580 is also slow. getting over the dublin grade. it's kind of hit and miss out there, but just give yourself plenty of extra time. 610 let's go back to the desk. >> all right. thank you sal. uh, curbing violence and keeping people safe. we'll talk about the new program aimed at increasing resources for schools, hospitals and other community sites impacted by recent strings of attacks and turning right on a red light may soon be illegal in parts of san francisco. >> we'll tell you why. the city's transportation agency wants

other than that, again, it's the usual stuff coming out of the east bay especially at the bay bridge th the metering lights on. and that's where we're really seeing a big backup so far this morning. heading into san francisco. >>> voters decide. you know, we've got a problem in the bay area. we look at this picture here and it's no secret. we have a lack of affordable housing. and right now a clock is ticking to get a large number of those affordable housing units available. keys in hand so to speak. san franciscans on the ballot see something called proposition "a" to get the housing units built and proponents say passing the measure will get money where it needs to be to get more housing that we can all actually afford. but not everybody agrees. our max darrow found critics say quotas are unreasonable. >> reporter: san francisco is in need of more housing. it's under a state mandate to build 82,000 units over the next eight years, more than half of them affordable units, and when it comes to going about getting that done, mayor london breed believes prop "a" is a key piece of the pu

we are going to see impacts here in the bay area, starting out with wet roads this morning as we look at the golden gate bridgeght mist and drizzle to start. push into the bay area, the arrival of the rainfall coming here soon for the north bay. we are starting to see light rain near the coastline and further to the north. as we time it out, it starts out light with spotty rain. then we start to see much more of the heavier rain picking up for the north bay around 1:00 to 2:00 this afternoon. move into san francisco with gusty winds, and it quickly sweeps across the rest of the bay area into the 5:00 and 6:00 hour. we could see that really impacting the evening commute. there will be a previous break for tonight, and then lingering showers with off and on rain into the day tomorrow. some of the pockets of rain could be heavy. we are looking at it picking up again tomorrow afternoon, both in intensity and the coverage of where we are seeing that across the bay area, much heavier rain coming in waves throughout the day on saturday and leaving us with a coating of snow. once again, to wrap up everything that we a

i could not really see on the bay bridge this morning. yeah, the ground has to own some moisture trapped in and a lot of that trapped at the surface. >> resulting in a very, very foggy start. this is your view from the berkeley hills, one of our not so foggy spots. it's one of our only views right now, but that can really see because we are seeing out there such a fog settled in for a lot of the bay up along 101. we do have spots from novato to santa rosa where visibility will be falling well below a quarter of a mile. that means trying to travel at lower speeds. make sure that you are giving yourself plenty of time into work. some of our bridges being affected as well as the inland east bay reports of some dense fog out towards areas like danville, dublin, san ramon spots like that. so we're definitely seeing patches out there that are proving to be a big problem this morning on 101, the inland east bay and even in the city itself. as for rainfall, it has definitely diminished. we still do see showers to our north. some snow up in the coa

folks are getting a pause or maybe just a lighter break right now as we look at the bay bridge toll plaza. you see the wet pavement and green highlighting around the bay. highway 12 and 121, we've had flooding in that area, some minor closures throughout. same thing for highway 9 down in the south bay, that continues with the closure. yesterday morning over here, we had niles canyon road. that was traffic controlled through the morning, but yesterday evening at 5:00 they completely closed the roadway. you'll use mission boulevard and 680. that's your typical workaround when they do construction. it's closed indefinitely. here is why. look at this video from yesterday evening. the creek has swelled up and eroded below the roadway, causing that roadway to drop out. so you have one lane that's impacted, of course. the second lane, they stopped it yesterday during the dark. they're not doing work overnight for safety's sake. they're going to reassess and see how much damage there is to repair and get a strategy. we should get an update this morning after 9:00 when they can assess the situatio

the bay bridge is getting body. tamont pass that's slow too. adding to that, there's a bit of a hotspot in the south bay right now. this morning if you are taking that ride northbound 101 just as you approach that 8808 connector, we've got a trouble spot there belonging the roadway. so traffic is really backing up in and around that area. give yourself a few extra minutes and maybe stick with 2830 in the meantime. that is moving along pretty well or maybe you can use 880 yourself. but right now the backup on 101 is extended pretty much beyond at least that 280/680 connector and it's building. so keep that in mind as you head through there. getting word of some standing water in and around that area as well. so might be some flooding issues through there. all right, bay bridge toll plaza, looks pretty dry right now which is great news, we can use a break. but it's busy already backed this morning for commuter heading into san francisco. dealing with fog this morning. where did the san mateo bridge go? it's hiding behi

taking a look at the roadways and dealing with the fog this morning especially over at the bay bridge. mostly affecting your drive as you get on to the span itself. so if you are traveling either direction on the bay bridge, might be a little bit of an issue for visibility. if you are at the toll plaza, really not seeing any of that fog there. but we are seeing all those brake lights and a busy ride for anyone heading over into san francisco this morning. so metering lights are officially on and so is that backup there. here's a quick snapshot we took moments ago of 880 near paseo grande courtesy of one of the caltrans cameras and you can see traffic is already backed up on the southbound 880 commute into the fremont area and adding to that if you are commuting over into the fremont area, maybe you are taking south 680, we do have reports of a crash blocking at least one lane right at durham road. and that's an area where we're seeing extra volume anyway as a lot of people use that due to the closure on 84 niles canyon. expect busier conditions there. the rest of 88 through oakland ac
