street merchant corridor and an opportunity to revitalize what i consider to be the main artery of the bayview district, of the southeast quarter. third street is a pretty long streak. from at&t park, it goes all the way to candlestick park. there is a lot of opportunity. don't squander that. we wanted to be a healthy mix that reflects the cultural history of the southeast part of the city. >> what are your thoughts on how the city can deal with the budget issue? >> we are in a very difficult time financially as a country, as a state, as a county. we have a multimillion-dollar deficit. what i see is we have competing priorities. >> ok. >> there's a whole host of non- profit and service organizations that provide a service and a social safety net for people. if people are not able -- they're not making money to get on calworks, or they get on aid, we cut that aid, that has an adverse affect on a population that needs it. i would like to see the city continued to move in a direction where we are prioritizing when it comes to our budget, our budget strategy. i was fortunate enough to be named to

we had a packed house at college track in the bayview. that's a new center that helps underserved students reach their college goals. in the crowd former san francisco mayor willie brown. lee asked brown to actually go easy on his speech in reviewing it since it's his first state of the city. lee said that unemployment is down to 6.5% compared to over 9% when he first took office. that downtown south of market business is moving in. san francisco he says remains a top destination for tourists. there are a number of big cranes working downtown, meaning more construction jobs. he's painting a picture of a city with a balanced two-year budget getting back on track. >> from the sunset to the mission to right here in the bayview, we're witnessing a rebirth of local manufacturing. fashion, artisanal food production that bear the label "made in san francisco." yes. >> reporter: now, he also talked up a new warriors arena, america's cup, he mentioned the world series champions san francisco giants as a point of pride. and he said in a number of da

22-year-old dexter oliver will be charged with attempted murder and arson for sunday's attack in the bayview. oliver was arrested yesterday at an oakland hotel. the victim, 25-year-old starr lamar still in the hospital with life-threatening burns. >>> dna technology has prompted an arrest in a 28-year-old mountain view murder case. it was january of 1985 when the body of 21-year-old saba girm april. was found in a dumpster behind a safeway on north shore line boulevard. friday police arrested a man on suspicion of murder. his dna was matched to skin under the victim's fingernails. >>> the search for victims of a so-called "speed freak" killers is taking a new turn. the feds are going to dig another possible burial site in san joaquin county for victims of westly shermantine and lauren herr son. the fbi is focusing on a 50- foot well near where 1,000 bones were found. >> this well is approximately 50 feet deep. as i said earlier, we may only be able to excavate 5 feet each day. so we are going to do a very methodical and careful search. >> the feds took over the investigation from the san joa

the younger individuals. indictment that we did with 10 gang members in bayview. we only went after the 10 most violent gang members. the ones committing murders, robberies. within their gangs, there was another subset of the individuals doing burglaries. those are not the individuals we went after. we went after the most violent ones. by getting of the most violent ones, what happens there was below of homicide, robbery is entailed -- and a lull in retaliatory shootings. what has to be done, you have to find a way to address that lull when it occurs. when he to find a way to have intervention when certain of the most violent members are taken off the streets. we look at the context of the individual, the external factors, and we try to find the appropriate remedy.
