however, what it did have is a steamtrain line that ran out lincoln way to the beach. it was basically built to bring picnicers, who wanted to get away for the weekend, to go to the beach for a sunday. right here at the end of the sunset district, at the northwest corner, is where carville gets its start, on a little strip of land, a little block that the mayor at the time owned. and that's where colonel daley put up his little coffee sal yoon -- saloon, using that old car. that's where carville takes off. so who's responsible for carville? we said the mayor of san francisco at the time. very wealthy land owner. owned at one point i think they say 1/12 of san francisco in land. most of it was in the west side of the city. robert fitzgerald was called the king of carville. he was an early settler to carville. jacob heyman that realtor, started being called the father of carville. we'll see why in a second. and this guy on the left, colonel daley, was often called the pioneer father of carville. he really gets a lot of the credit. here's colonel daley in his little shed.

the beaches are huge. they are dangerous. especially san francisco and rocaway beach. the swell is very small. but on these big holiday weekends please be careful because ocean beach, rocaway beach are nasty for rip currents currents there time of year. especially at ocean beach and rocaway beach. overnight lows tonight will be in the 50s. fog not a player. i talked to my buddy mark tamayo he was in today. he said you know what i think there's going to be some patches of fog. i don't think it's going to be a strong change. i know a lot of you you're not going to want to be a part of that. so we'll help you check the burn off at the beaches. and there you see it burning off tomorrow afternoon. so all the beaches, all of them are clear. these are the ones i want you to watch out for right around here. this west facing beach. not big swell but we have pretty good tide movement. you will get a down shore current and rip currents that are pretty nasty. i'll be back in a little bit, specific temperatures for your neighborhood. the five day forecast that includes all three day

fog bank continues to hangon to the beaches. by tomorrow afternoon and we will cool down in the beginning of the week as the next weather system approaches, it will bring with it cooler air and a deeper fog bank to last through midweek before that one mixes out with a bit of a warming trend for the weekend. now as usual we will expect the clouds to give way to afternoon sunshine around the bay here as once again we'll look for temperatures close to today maybe a degree or two warmer especially in the interior where the mid-80s will prevail and east bay in the upper 70s and on the peninsula and at the beach we are back in the mid 60s and in the fog out along the bay and that fog will likely hang onto the beaches through most of tomorrow afternoon and like it did today. the cooler air in the area beginning of the week as below normal temperatures and pretty much across the board until wednesday and things will start to heat up for next weekend and we will be back to normal which means a few more normals out across the interior and

so people are definitely heading out to the beach. w, if you are going to be doing that, if you're going to be crossing the bay bridge, there are times that are better than others to do that. let's take a closer look. if you're leaving today, the advice is cross the bridge before 10:00 this morning. if you can't do that, then wait until after 10:00 tonight. if you're leaving on saturday, cross before 7:00 a.m. or after 5:00 p.m. on sunday the suggestion is to cross before 10:00 a.m. or after 10:00 p.m. on monday, same thing. cross before 10:00 a.m. or after 10:00 p.m. because we are expecting the congestion to continue to build here. we're seeing more traffic now than we did in the earlier hours during the first time we talked to you. so the volume is picking up. but still looking pretty good at this point. also keep in mind, if you're traveling on route 50, those hov lanes, you're not going to get a break because of the holiday. they are in effect all the time. and the police are going to be out there monitoring the highways, making s

what about the beaches? pretty much the same thing. we've been calling for temperatures mid to upper 80s all week long. chances for storms on monday, a chance for a storm on monday, too. the beaches look good. the beach water temperature all up and down the shore, i just checked this, around 74 degrees. still chilly. 87 across the bay for cape may, 84 on saturday, a few thunderstorms on monday. keeping it dry for july the fourth at cape may. keeping it mostly dry for july the fourth, too. the beaches looking very nice. back here at home, comfortable temperatures tonight. lower 60s in the suburbs. here in town, around 70 degrees or so. the wins will remain light. early tomorrow morning, if you have a reason to get up early, we'll be a little chilly in the suburbs, 8:00 in town, 73 degrees, hot by noon, 87 degrees. an isolated storm possible tomorrow afternoon, tomorrow evening, one or two, and looks like most of that should stay to the west of us. a high of 92 degrees, 93 on saturday, 95 on sunday; and again, a few more clouds on sunday

earlier clearing in that fog layer here this afternoon bringing a little more sunshine even back to the beaches which of course means slightly warmer temperatures for the region. a closer look coming up in a few minutes. >>> an innocent victim of gun violence a young girl inside an apartment last night in san francisco when a gunshot from outside hit her in the chest. she is in the hospital with life-threatening injuries. this was the scene around 11:15 last night on laguna street in the western addition. police say someone was shooting a downtown side and one bullet went through an apartment building hitting that girl. she is at san francisco general hospital, there are no arrests. >>> 91 people are now confirmed dead from yesterday's terror attacks in norway. today the royal family is meeting with the family of the victims. in the first attack a bomb exploded in oslo and ripped open buildings there. in the second attack, at least one man opened fire on a youth camp on an island 20 miles northwest of the city. the prime suspect in both attacks is this man, andres breivik, a norwegian described

it's looking like patchy fog at the beaches. watch out for dense fog at the coast. inland valleys mostly clear and that's where it is going to get hot once again. these temperatures up into the 50s and the 60s already inland. cooler of course at the coast with the patchy fog. by the afternoon, hotter than it was yesterday. 90s maybe even low 100s in the interior valleys. 70s in oakland, 90s toward san jose, while out toward the coastline a big change in the temperatures. those temperatures mainly into the 60s. much cooler weather for everyone coming up. we'll have more on that in a few minutes. right now let's check traffic with elizabeth. >> we'll go right out to san mateo. we have video of an earlier accident along the peninsula. southbound 101 just past the highway 92 exit in san mateo. you can see for a while they had three left lanes shut down. chp was out there with their flares. traffic never really got backed up just minor slowing approaching the scene but within the last 10 minutes they have completely cleared the scene. in fact, we can go to our maps to sh

the surf there. this is at muir beach near tennessee cove. and they are hoisting the 17- year-old girl onto a chp helicopter. she and two friends had been hanging out at the beach and didn't seem to realize the tide was coming in. they ended up stranded behind a rock and couldn't get back to the main beach when the waves started pointing. all three of them -- two of them broke free and witnesses ran to help. >> she was too exhausted. she couldn't say anything. we just pulled her out and what we did we just took all our clothes and towels and tried to warm her up as much as we can and we ran back into the water to try to save the next girl. >> the next girl he is referring to is the 17-year-old who is here at the hospital this morning. she was swept out to sea. a man on the beach tried to rescue her. he got caught in the current, as well. by the time rescuers finally got to her with the helicopter, she was unconscious. she certainly seems to be in the worst shape of the three. the other two teenagers were taken to another hospital with more min
