traffic changes coming to the inner loop of the beltway. one of two exits to i-66 westbound will close. transportation officials say it could cause a lot of confusion among drivers. john schriffen is live in fairfax tonight with more on what the change is going to mean for commuters. john? >> reporter: good evening. i want to assure viewers at home, it looks like we are standing in the middle of the beltway, we are safe. we are in the middle of the hot lanes construction project. the ramp here to 66 west is going to be closed. as you look, it's a very, very busy off ramp. about 2,000 cars take this ramp every hour during the p.m. rush. now, they have to learn a new traffic pattern. you can see, there are cones set up on the right side of the beltway here. tomorrow morning, all the cones will be taken out to open up this new lane here for the exit on the right side. for drivers used to coming through here, if you don't pay attention to the signs, it will be easy to miss this exit. for drivers in northern virginia, traffic is a way of life on

we have a public-private partnership on the beltway. what i want to point out to you, a success story, if you go north on the red line, you will see the new york avenue metro station. that was with land developers, involving warehousing around the area, and the king to the district and the federal -- and they came to the district and the federal government and ask to have a rail system built for them, and everyone thought, right on. and then we got federal funding. the ratio ended up a little bit different in the end, but that project from the time it was conceived to the time it was open, it was less than five years, partly because it was not controversial, but that funding blend was just critical, and i think we made a mistake when we did not get a big enough share from the private sector. >> very good at negotiating. >> right. that is another thing to watch out for. they tended to be very good negotiators. however, everyone is just delighted with the outcome. the new york avenue area has been totally transformed by that station. >> ok

> we are following a developing story that could have a significant impact on your next trip on the beltway. a major traffic shift is about to take effect at the interchange with interstate 66. brianne carter is in fairfax county this afternoon with all the details. >> we are at that interchange along the northbound lanes of 495. here's the new exit you'll need to take to get on to 66 west starting tomorrow. you know that this is an area where you have a chance to get off on the left or the rights for an exit ramp to 66. that will not be the case starting tomorrow. the right side will be your only option. the reason for this is the hot lanes project. they have been working on that to get completed by 2012. officials say that they believe this right lane change will be beneficial in the long run. >> we think that this is going to be an improvement because you always have drivers going from afar right to the left and that slows down traffic. anytime you have a left exit, traffic slows. overall, the design is better and traffic will move smoothly through that area by having the right exit. >>
