the east bay. kiet do is live in berkeley with more on the investigation. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. we're here on the 500 block of craigmont in berkeley and this is the scene of a basically an arson fire. there is an investigator here looking for evidence trying to figure out what happened here. and you see him standing there? that's pretty much where the fire started this morning at about 1:00. and so as firefighters were coming out to this scene, they noticed one person was out here trying to fight the fire himself with some sort of garden hose. there was one person inside along with a pet. they rescued that person, as well. as a second crew was heading to this scene on the 500 block, they noticed there was a second fire on the 400 block. and so the berkeley fire department says that -- a slim chance that there is a coincidence. there wasn't any lightning or anything like that. so the chances of two fires starting within minutes of each other on the same street -- it's suspicious at this point. there is a strong odor of fuel, burnt metal, w

fire started at the first floor of a home on berkeley way about an hour ago and then spread to the second story. the fire is out but the extent of the firefighter's injuries is not known at this time. we hope to have a live report coming up shortly on that fire. >>> their fate sealed. the couple who confessed to the kidnap and jaycee dugard were sentenced an hour ago. allen martin is live in the newsroom with how long each will spend behind bars and what was said in the courtroom. >> reporter: it was a very, very emotional morning in the courtroom in placerville. decades of pain and suffering coming to a conclusion with the sentencing of phillip and nancy garrido today. phillip was sentenced to 431 years to life. that's the maximum sentence he could have gotten. his wife nancy, 36 years to life in prison. both had pleaded guilty in april to kidnapping jaycee dugard, who was 11 years old back then, then raping her and holding her for 18 years. jaycee dugard was not there at today's sentencing but her biological mother read a statement on jaycee's behalf and it says, i chose not to be here

yen when he was at the uc-berkeley. we work together have the pacific islander organization. and the california progressive student alliance on many different campaigns in the 1980's. we studied computer technologies at uc-berkeley or he received an award for outstanding achievements. he was an it support specialist. he also worked for the san francisco unified school district as well. when he was 10 years old, dave became disabled by severe rheumatoid arthritis. he nevertheless remained a strong person. i enjoyed spending time with him at the civic center plaza. he was a great lover of all kinds of food, especially san francisco food. you live life to the fullest and never let his disability defeat him or get in his way. he has been a devoted san francisco giants fan. he left as way too early at the age of 46. i would like to express my condolences to the yen family and many close acquaintances that he has built up over the years. it is a tremendous loss and i am really sad. he was a great friend and on spiring brother and extraordinary son and great person. david's friends
