there was the berkeley barb and the free press there was the east village in new york and there's a paper the fifth estate in detroit and ironically for me and for matt because we went to michigan state the first campus newspaper was called the paper and it was in east lancing. towards the end of 1966 these papers started sprouting up in every region of the country and by the end of the '60s you had literally hundreds maybe 4 or 500 in every city every campus and community with readership that stretched into the millions combined. people sometimes ask how i got interested in the topic. i just got out of my dissertation and i used these newspapers as a source material and i was interested in trying to understand, you know, how it was that the '60s rebellion happened and to me it's perplexing that so many young people in the late 60s became so intensely radical that, you know, to the point where they not only thought that, you know, united states is not -- is not that the country is moving in a wrong direction but rather that it needs to be completely reformed. that there's something rotten

from the berkeley hills moon coming up there and looking great. a couple patches of fog along the way and more beginning to surge back on shore tomorrow. tomorrow looking fantastic. we are going to see a lot of sunshine. patchy fog out toward the coastline. cool there, but not bad at all. temperatures right now running in the 50s and low 60s inland. we have changes in the works. as it looks like a trough of low pressure going to make its way towards the bay area. we have cooler air coming our direction. temperatures are going to drop a little further, but comfortable toward the afternoon. after morning fog gives way to sunshine, we are looking good. temperature wise, we are looking at 80s. about 77 in san jose. 75 degrees in palo alto. east bay temperatures, some of the warmest. 87 degrees in antioch. some 60s in toward berkly. 70 degrees in oakland. breezy toward the afternoon. 50s and 60s toward the coastline along the north coast. temperature wise, very nice under mostly sunny skies. mostly sunny, temperatures in the 70s around parts of the nort

there was the berkeley barb in the free press, the east village in new york, there's a paper called theh estate in detroit and then ironically for me and we went to michigan state the first campus based newspaper was in lansing, michigan. but towards the end of 1966 the papers started spreading quickly in every single pocket and region of the country and by the end of the 60's we have hundreds me before or 500 newspapers and every city from every campus, every community with the readership that stressed into the millions combined. people sometimes ask how i got interested in the topic. this grew out of my dissertation of columbia. at first i was using these underground newspapers as a source material and i was interested in trying to understand how it was that the 60's rebellion happened and to me it is perplexing that so many young people in the late 60's became so intensely radical that, you know, to the point that they not only thought that the united states, now the country is not living in the wrong direction but rather that needs to be reformed at the core of american society and

that's zachary runningwolf he was among the tree-sitters of berkeley a few years ago. he has been a mainstay in dozens of protests in the bay area throughout the years. today police released a list of names of arrestees from monday night's protest. among them, some other notable names. gabriel myers of oakland. he was arrested in connection with the 2005 g8 protest during which a san francisco police officer was seriously injured. a cop car was set on fire. two years ago, in april 2009, gabriel myers pleaded guilty for throwing paint on dorothy dugger during a bart board meeting. he was sentenced to 30 days in jail. the ages of those arrested range from 17 to 56. most serious charge was against 27-year-old ryan ragle. he was busted for possession of an incendiary device a felony. police say he lit it up on market street during the protest. the morning. we are live in berkeley i'm tara moriarty. >> right now 6:36. want to go back over to sal for a look at the commute. how does it look? >> looking a little bit better. in fact, we do have a little bit of friday light action going on today. or nonaction if you will. by knowers have 237 that is slow but it's not just yet. hopefully it will stay this way. maybe it will get slower later. right now it's good near interstate 880. that's where the camera is here. bay bridge toll plaza is also light. there is a little bit of a backup in those metering lights are on. this mornings commute on the caldecott tunnel was effected by this earlier crash this morning westbound 24 just outside the tunnel there were also a couple other crashes. a couple noninjury crashes in the back up. one of them being a hit and run. so right now the caldecott tunnel is open. but we still may see slowing traffic because of the earlier crash. at 6:37 i want to remind you that ktvu morning news team has a facebook page. go there and we have behind the scene pictures. some things yo
