gabriel giffords is there to support the bill. tonight members of both parties in both the house and the senate say they are voting no. some of them for very different reasons. >> the reason i still don't support this bill is because it doesn't solve the underlying problem. the only way to bind future congresses to stand by the cuts we are discuss something through an amendment to the constitution that will actually restrict permanently congress' borrowing authority. >> i cannot in good conscience support a plan where soldiers, seniors, students, and working families must inel during trillions in cuts while oil companies, billionaires, corporate jet owners are not asked to pay one cent. >> shepard: a taste of the opposition from both sides of the political fence. the plan raises the debt ceiling by $2.4 trillion to get us through the end of next year, according to the congressman. it cuts $1 trillion in spending right away. they tell us with no tax increases. it all creates a congressional committee to come up with another $1.5 tri

the bottom line is that politics aside, this bill is bad for the people. ll that will hurt our economy and is an attack on middle class families. >> didn't some of these progressives in congress help create this problem by not addressing it before the 2010 election? >> well, i'm very intrigued by this question. i totally want to answer it. let me point out that the caucus has something called the people's budget. it doesn't get mentioned enough. it's the answer it to what michael steele said before when he said where's the plan? it would balance the budget by taxes millionaires and rich and asking companies to pay their fair share and to end the wars. >> did the democratic congress push that bill? >> right. well, that gets to your earlier question why didn't democrats do something in power? we have to keep it real. we need to poibt our eyes at the white house. this is a president who has shown time after time even when the people are overwhelmingly on his side, instead of barnstorming across the districts of republicans like candidate obama would have in 20
