then the broward sheriff's office took him in custody. what we have just been toldpy the florida senator bill nelson to peter doocy is that there are, and i quote, many fatalities on scene. we know the senator told peter that after receiving word from the school system. now we're waiting for authorities to tell us that the lockdown is over. we know that the students have been dismissed from the school, that they have been taken to nearby buses. we know the authorities are still investigating. why know the streets around are closed and that hospitals are still waiting and ready to take in more casualties if necessary. this is the scene from earlier, 3:00 p.m. there was barely controlled chaos around the school. you can see that the fire department, the parkland fire department was there. they loaded a number of students or young people on to stretchers and transported them to nearby hospitals. in fact, wsvn has a reporter outside the trauma center at broward general hospital. let's listen in. >> we have four people being tended to here at b

organization, in the area of broward county. her name is dr. heather share. she was working the day of the school shooting, and she went to work in the trauma center on some of the victims. she has treated countless gunshot wounds in trauma centers throughout her career, but this one was the second time that she had treated someone shot by an assault rifle like the ar-15, and here's what dr. share had to say: quote. routine handgun injuries leave entry and exit wounds and linear tracks through a victim's body that are roughly the size of a bullet. if the bullet from a handgun does not directly hit something crucial like the heart or the aorta, chances are we can save the victim. the bullet, however, fired by an ar-15 are different. she continues: with an ar-15, the shooter does not have to be particularly accurate. the victim doesn't have to be unlucky. if a victim takes a direct hit to, for example, the live, from an ar-15, the damage is far graver than that of a handgun bullet injury. handgun injuries to the liver are generally

the broward county sheriff seemed to indicate his deputies didn't follow protocol. st listen. >> when we in law enforcement arrive at an active shooter, we go in and address the target. and that's what should have been done. >> so what cann be the explanation? not knowing what to do? freezing? waiting for other orders? what do you think happened? >> what explanation in this case? police officers since 1999 columbine have been taught no waiting, especially if you hear shots in progress, get in there, find the shooter and stop him. whatever it takes. you don't wait for backup. you don't wait for a s.w.a.t. team to come and put gear on and, you know, do that kind of assault by team. just get in tlahere and stop it. why they didn't do, in this case the school resource officer that we heard about and then the other three deputies. apparently this controversy didn't come to light until the coral gables police officers that arrived went right in with the shooting and noticed that broward county deputies didn't go in with them. and they came back and complained to their chie
