brussels. mohamed abrini admitting to be the man in the hat at the brussels airport. abrini has admitted to being the third suspect seen on surveillance video with brussels airport bombers. belgian federal prosecutor is telling cnn this. again, you're seeing that video shortly after the explosion taking place at the airport. in this statement, the federal prosecutor's office can now confirm that the man that you see walking there in that video is that of mohamed abrini right there in that shot to the far right. you know the other two suicide bombers to the left, pushing the carts, killed in the explosion that killed 30 people roughly and the person who had been widely searched for in that trenchcoat, wearing that rain hat there now apparently according to the brussels authorities, the person who was arrested in raids earlier, mohamed abrini. mohamed abrini now telling authorities in brussels that that is indeed him, the man in the trenchcoat and rain hat there that they had this extensive search looking for him for a very long time. kelly morgan joins us. what more ca

i want to get to the breaking news out of brussels. arrested a suspect in last year's paris attacks, part of the cell connected to last month's deadly bombings in brussels. joining me from london senior international diplomatic editor nic robertson. what more do we know about these arrests, the exact location and who was captured? we know that it was mohamed abrini, one of the people captured and also a man called -- we don't have a lot of details about him. there is speculation about his role or whereabouts during the brussels attack. that haven't been released on an official basis but with what we know about mohamed abrini, he was in the man who drove with salah abdeslam, one of the planners of the paris attacks, two days before the paris attacks, drove from brussels paris, picked up on cctv camera at a gas

you just talked about the brussels attacks. it's been just over two weeks since those attacks and now the city's tourism industry is under pressure from the fallout. some businesses say that occupancy rates are down by as much as 50%. visitor numbers have fallen sharply they say and business owners say they need help and quickly. >> it's great like this with not so many people around. you can take very beautiful photos. >> just over two weeks since the attacks in brussels, which left 32 people dead, the city tourist industry is reeling. for tour guides finding work has been even more difficult. >> at the moment we have half the normal number of people coming. hotels have been hit as have restaurants. >> of the 14 rooms in this hotel overlooking the grand pass only five are taken. nheard of in holiday season. >> it's exceptional. we've never known this. it's exceptional. i think our belgian government seriously needs to pay attention to this problem. it's not enough to say that it's bad. no, it's not bad. it's worse than that. >>

so close after the paris and brussels attacks. th new information coming out of belgium that some of the planners may have been doing - extensive surveillance on a nuclear scientist. some may have had plans to attack a nuclear facility. it is interesting to hear the white house somewhat downplay the risk. they said in a country like belgium, security is extremely tight around nuclear facilities. they say it reinforces the fact they believe isis would like to get its hands on nuclear material. some experts say they see the broader threat, not being highly enriched uranium, that's used to make nuclear bombs held by two dozen countries. that's been reduced significantly over the last decade. security is also much tighter than it was. they see the real threat as being this lower grade radiological material, kinds used in hospitals and held by academic institutions. that is held in more than 30 countries and sites around the world. some have terrible security. they see that as the likely way that isis could get its hands on some materia

the brothers and abrini were childhood friends from brussels. a younger brother who was killed fighting for isis back in 2014. and the bigger question now is about the extent of the terror network, how widespread might that web be across europe? kelly morgan joins us this hour, following it from brussels. it's good to have you, kelly. so, what could these new arrests bring to investigators when it comes to intelligence? >> reporter: yes, george. well, they certainly consolidate, don't they, the links between the brussels attacks and the paris attacks. you just mentioned the links abrini had to the paris attacks. in terms of what happened in brussels, prosecutors allege it was his dna found in that apartment, the so-called bomb-making factory used by the brussels attackers. he's spent his first night in custody after that dramatic arrest on the streets of brussels yesterday. he was walking around in plain sight in another neighborhood in brussels when he was pounced on by undercover operatives and taken into custody. after that further searches w

abdeslam is cooperating with the brussels police and paris police since his arrest. as they looked in the neighborhood and used search warrants and debriefing informants, they ran across mohammed today. upon his arrest he was identified as the suspect in the white coat in the brussels airport bombing. it is a huge arrest for brussels and paris and intelligence community. there were other arrests made today. and they are going to be searching through the hard are drives and electronics and phones. and this blows both cases wide open. >> he had not been publicly identified as being associated with the brussels attacks until today. and then his arrest pops up, essentially out of no where. he was sought in connection with paris, but first time he was identified in brussels, you know at the airport and metro station? >> reporter: from the information we had so far, it seems they didn't know this. and information was based on the paris attack and they went in and looked at photos and other evidence, they realized that it is the same individual that was involved in the bruss

he was finally arrested on friday in the district of brussels, five months after the paris jackson threeweeks after brussels. he was caught after police requested the public's help in tracking him down. after his arrest, abrini told the press that the attacks that killed 32 in brussels were not the primary plan. in fact the terrorists had originally planned to attack the paris financial district and a catholic association but they felt the net was closing it so they rushed forward their plan. abrini's statement confirms what so many had expected. the arrests in the week before the brussels attacks pushed the killers to action. abrini was tracked down after police surveillance footage of his long walk from the airport into the center of brussels after the attack following his arrest police confronted him with that video after which he admitted he was indeed the one scene accompanying the suicide bombers at the brussels airport. brussels remains on the highest alert. three others have been arrested over the weekend but few believe this is over. the belgian prime minister believes more atta

he's on the run more than two weeks after the brussels attacks. dered consider dangerous and now belgian officials are asking for the public's health with video that provides startling new details of this man's escape route. the most hunted man in europe still on the run. tonight authorities have raised the stakes. belgian police just released surveillance footage of the man in white, the third attacker at the brussels airport. his identity still unknown. he's believed to have left a bomb at the airport and then slipped away just minutes after the bombs explode, police say the man in white leaves the brussels airport, walks past this sheraton hotel, turns right, through this avis parking lot. for a moment he starts running. he's on foot the whole time taking this path toward the center of the town. then he's seen an hour later again. his sleeves are rolled up. police also note this. he has ditched his white jacket. >> ditched my coat. toss it. i've changed my appearance. how hard does that make me to track as a suspect? >> makes it extremely diffic

they believe he played an operational role in the brussels attacks. now we understand he is one and the same as osama krayem. this is somebody who came through the greek island on september 20, came through then austria and went to a refugee center in olm, germany. where he was picked up on the 3rd of october and then driven to brussels. this attack coming through europe from syria to go to paris, to go to brussels, congregating there. is this the end of the story? this is not the end of the story. there are at least four other people they have the identities of that are wanted in connection with the paris and brussels attacks. and so they're looking for them at the moment. there's concern that some of them may have faked their own deaths in syria. not clear whether, you know, some are alive or dead. but the european officials have been increasingly seeing these isis operatives from europe pretending that they're dead so it's more easy to come into europe. a number of those four individuals i was just talking about, that's the case with them. >> so her

seen in the brussels airport with the two bombers just moments before explosions shook the terminal. nfessed after being confronted with facial recognition evidence. let's go live to cnn's fred pleitgen in brussels. fred what is he saying to authorities? >> reporter: well, it's interesting, because pamela, aside from saying, yes, he was, indeed, that so-called man in the hat, the third person in that surveillance picture, he also apparently told them all about the route that he took after he left the brussels airport saying that he went along towards the city center of brussels, that at some point along the way he threw away his jacket that he was wearing, and sold a hat that he'd also been wearing to conceal his identity. now, the police say this is, of course, a major step forward and hope to get even more information from abrini, because they also fear that there could still be people out there that are part of this wider cell that could potentially be dangerous. earlier today, i was at a raid that took place in the etterbeek district of brussels, and the police raided that place f

he's implicated in the paris attacks but also in the brussels attacks as well. ce are trying to find out whether or not he may have been the man in the hat. what happened afterwards there was a raid on that street over there. throughout the better part of the evening we saw cops in the house over there going in and out. forensic teams as well bringing evidence out trying to find out and corroborate whether or not abrini was the third person at the airport but also whether or not a second man who was arrested whose name is osama krayem, whether or not he may have been implicated in one of the other bombings here in brussels. so you're absolutely right. the police are saying this is potentially a big coup for them but no reason for them to rest up. >> from what i understand, belgian authorities are still looking for at least a dozen people still that may be at large, potentially connected to these attacks, right? >> that's the number we're getting as well. a dozen -- around a dozen people. not just implicated in the brussels attacks but also potentially in the pari

you'll remember this surveillance video and that man in the hat inside the brussels airport. right there with the two suicide bombers and then caught on camera, again, in the moments after the blast. well, tonight, investigators say that man, mohamed abrini, has confessed to being that infamous man in the hat. abc's alex marquardt is in brussels tonight with more on how authorities say he got away. >> reporter: answers finally tonight in the frantic manhunt for the so-called "man in the hat" from the brussels terror attacks. according to belgian authorities, mohamed abrini, arrested friday, told them today that he is that man, seen with the two airport suicide bombers who targeted the departures hall. abrini allegedly leaving behind a bag of explosives before fleeing, the escape caught on surveillance cameras. the 31-year-old belgian was also the last known suspect of the november paris attacks, charged today with terrorist murders and participation in a terrorist group. authorities say brini's dna had been found at the brussels apartment, a virtual bomb factory, from where he

the run. james reynolds reports from brussels the man has yet to be identified. >> three men entered brussels t with explosives. the two on the left detonated theirs. the one on the right, called the man in the hat, did not. he managed to get away amid this, the aftermath of the explosions. belgian officers have tried to retrace his steps that morning. the police have now put together this video of his escape. the security camera picks him up on the outskirts of the airport grounds. he is wearing a distinctive hat and pale jacket. at this point, no one had any reason to notice him. but he needs to get away. here he breaks into a jog. the authorities are desperate to find more footage of this, his getaway. >> a special appeal to people who might have taken a photograph of the suspect. >> an hour after the explosions, a security camera films the suspect walking into brussels. he has got rid of his jacket by now. later in town he crosses a busy road. at 9:49 a.m., almost two hours after the bombs went off, is seen again, possibly talking on the phone. the cameras lost the third man at about this
