this is a second corroboration, happening inside the cafeteria. initially the students thought it was a fire drill until teachers told everyone to run into the classrooms because of an active shooting. this student is currently on lockdown inside of a classroom with other students and all of these students are unharmed you can see a number of students outside the school but for some students, they are on lockdown in individual classrooms. the student says at least one victim has been airlifted via helicopter. we saw it was too two students. this is way too early to know concretely how many, to be honest. but according to this one student, she saw one student airlifted via helicopter to a hospital. she believes multiple people have been shot. i have steve cardian on the line with me, a former new york police detective, alexandra field, do you have anything? >> i'm just looking with you at people leaving the school. it seems like we see them out there walking. incredibly tense moments for anyone watching this and may know someone, a student, a teache

how many kids were in the cafeteria at the time? well, since it was half day, nose as many as normally. so, there was probably about maybe 50, maybe in that cafeteria. i saw -- then some people were probably eating outside. and i know you said that you were home-schooled at one point. the school year is still new. and you mentioned that you remember this student holding up signs for homecoming. is there anything -- without revealing the identity of the student, we don't want to say name right now on air -- is there anything else that sticks out to you about this student? >> well, my friend had a class with him before, before the lunch, and the girl that was running with me, and she said she felt like he was being all cautious and, like, quiet, and was always looking down, and, like -- yeah. >> any idea why he was -- aside from the fact he a paramountly was carrying -- apparently was carrying a concealed weapon. any reason why he would feel that way? anything happen to him or any indication of a rope why he would want to open fire? >

we now know that gunmen shot at least two people in the cafeteria. that's according to local reports now, and these are the latest pictures, these are live pictures coming to us from our network news service kla tv. it's been a very calm scene. this has been in no way reminiscent for those of you around for columbine or any of that sort of thing. it's been nothing like that. students have been coming out very calmly. none of the hands over your head stuff. teachers have been with them. you see some people who are in wheel chairs here and milling about very calmly, and it appears from the demeanor of the people who we've been watching here in the big wall that they've got this pretty well under control. that said, local media reports tell us that two people were shot in the cafeteria, that multiple shots were fired. we know from authorities that the school is on lockdown. at least 20 police cars and lots of ambulances are responding here. we know because we've been watching it from this helicopter shot from cuomo. a mother said that her kids told her -

big round table right next to the door from the cafeteria. i was sitting at the table right next to the round table. and i was just eating my food. i'd just got done eating my food. he was quiet. he was just sitting there. everyone was talking. all of a sudden i see him stand up, pull something out of his pocket. at first, i thought somebody was making a loud noise with a bag until i heard a loud pop. i heard four more after that and i saw three kids fall from the table, like they were falling to the ground dead. >> the student says he managed to run out of the cafeteria when the gunman stopped to either reload or that gun jammed. joining us in "the situation room," congressman jim mcdermott of washington state. congressman, what are your folks there telling you about what happened at that high school? >> i'm really only privileged to know what's coming on the official media. i don't have any information from law enforcement people or the fbi or anybody else. i know what you know. >> tell us about this area. you know the area well. tell us abo

the gunman apparently walked into the cafeteria and started shooting. ing, the community is trying to figure out how this could have happened. joe fryer is following it all from washington this morning. joe, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, lester. investigators are still trying to figure out the motive in this shooting. of police say that two students were killed, including the gunman, after he opened fire inside the cafeteria yesterday morning at marysville-pilchuck high school. four other students were injured. two males and two females. three of them hospital officials say were shot in the head. they remain in critical condition. family members tell us at least two of the victims were actually related to the gunman. they were cousins, and according to one relative, they were all very close. high-level law enforcement sources and witnesses identify the alleged shooter as jaylen fryberg, a freshman at the school. earlier on "today," we spoke with an eyewitness to the shooting. >> i saw him walk up and he, like, had a gun. and i just saw him, bo

the new details this morning of the deadly shooting inside a washington high school cafeteria. good morning. welcome back to "early start." i'm john berman. >> i'm christine romans. it is 5:00 in the east. the controversy rages over the ebola guidelines. should health care works and others returning from west africa be subject to automatic quarantine. the cdc advises against it and advises different measures for different levels of risk. someone with high risk must avoid public places. this is someone who had direct contact with an infected person's bodily fluids. someone pricked by a needle in treating a patient. an individual with some risk must be monitored and use common sense. this would be someone who has had contact with an infected person but wore protective gear. at low risk, someone should be monitored, but not restricted. this is someone with minimal contact with an ebola patient and no risk or monitoring. this is someone who had contact with an infected person before they were symptomatic. a number of states taking additional steps. six states monitoring everyone com

witnesses say jaylen fryberg, the teenager who apparently opened fire inside the cafeteria at marysville pilchuck high school shot friends and relative who is are close to him. alex hatch, a distant cousin and friend of the gunman was sitting the next table over. >> i looked up and jaylen, he was looking at us. he didn't look like him. he looked like a different person. he had a look on his face like he was just realizing what he did and, i think, he had a kind of change of his heart. if he wanted to, he could have gone on. >> reporter: receiving the first 911 call, at 10:41 a school resource officer arrived in the cafeteria. by 10:43 it was confirmed fryberg was down after taking his own life. one victim, a female student, was killed. four more were injured including two of the suspect's distant cousins, 14-year-old nate hatch who's in serious condition, and 15-year-old andrew fryberg in critical condition. >> they're good boys. as well as the shooter, they're just three complete buddies and they couldn't be closer than three brothers. >> reporter: the two other victims are gia soriano
