later today the cal state trustees will vote on a tuition hike. cond one already this year, as you mentioned. this they have to cover a $650 million budget cut from the state budget. and they are looking to students to fill the gap. so california state university is like cal state university east bay where we're live this morning. we'll see a 12% increase in tuition costs. that's on top of a 10% increase that was approved earlier this year. and these increases will be immediate. starting this fall semester, it will cost almost $5,500 per semester. it's not just a cal state system. uc system votes on thursday on their tuition increase. students at schools like berkeley are facing a 9% increase which means they will be paying over $12,000 for the fall term. the students are upset for having to pay more because there's concerns for what it means for hire education. increased tuition costs means less time for things like extracurricular activities, important internships which are often unpaid if students are spending more time working. as students brac

the cost- cutting move. >> reporter: good morning. cal fire is cutting the last year of a three-year contract with the nation's largest air tanker. these are the planes that are used in fighting a fire. the dc-10 planes carry up to 12,000 gallons of fire retardant which is a huge tool for california in fighting fires. a major concern as we head into the summer fire season. the cal fire was told they had to cut $34 million from its budget. canceling this contract with the planes will save the state about $7 million. that's about one-fourth of the total cuts they were forced to make. this isn't the first time cal fire has cancelled their contract with the southern california company. they did so back in 2009. but the concern now is that they have already cut 730 seasonal firefighters. so cutting the contract with the planes means grounding one of the state's most important tools in fighting a huge fire. cal fire says no one is happy. but it's the best choice among poor alternatives. >> tough budget times we are having to make some tough dec

i represent the cal hallow association and other appellants. i will keep my comments brief. others wished to speak on behalf of the community. i would like to first make a point about the notice period. 20 days was inadequate. the proper time was 30 days. there is no dispute that over $ 2 million of this project is coming from the federal funds, and an analysis is required. in fact, a considerable environmental assessment impact report to hud was prepared, and yet, there was no notification to hud or any other federal agencies so that these documents could be coordinated with one another. i would also like to point out that this is on highway 101, and caltrans does have jurisdiction over this area. there were also not notified. finally, the historic elements of this property has not been addressed by the state's office of historic preservation. rather, the project sponsor has made an assessment of no historic value, and that assessment has been echoed by the department. in light of that, it seems strange that this application and pmnd not be submitted to the state office for
