california's forest firefighters are state prison inmates. yes, you heard that right. that's because 4,000 low-level felons in the state's prison system are part of a program that allows them to earn wages doing manual labor outside. from clearing brush to starting fires. they live in concentration camps scattered throughout the state. california is the largest program of its kind. the inmates are supervised and crowsen based on good behavior as well as what they were convicted of. for instance those convicted of arson, for obvious reasons, are barred from the program. each day they work in the program, the inmates receive a two-day reduction in sentences. they're paid $1 an hour while on the line fighting fires. it's estimated that the program has saved the state of california up to $100 million a year according to the spokesperson for the california department of correction and rehabilitation, the agency that runs the program with cal fire and the inmates cut containment lines and get close to the flames which can reach 100 feet high on rugged terrain. he said it's life-or-death situations, it's dangerous work.

as you know, i am on the -- all aaa directors in the state of california are on the california association of aging board as directors. that makes us members. so i was voted through an election process to represent california as one of two board members on the national board. so every region, there is 12 regions, has four. so we have one from hawai'i, and one from arizona, and two from california, being the bigger state. for a number of years i was the alternate, and recently became the board -- took the board seat. so what had happened the staff for nfra was asked for the names of people of potential invitees, and gave the president and two of the vice presidents names, and i am one of the vice presidents, and that is how, they took all three of them, thank you very much. it was somewhat difficult because the conference was right in the middle of the national association conference which is held in philadelphia. so -- but, that's when the president was available. so that's what we did. so we were, a number of staff and myself were in philadelphia for the conference, where we did win an aw

as you know, i am on the -- all aaa directors in the state of california are on the california association of aging board as directors. that makes us members. so i was voted through an election process to represent california as one of two board members on the national board. so every region, there is 12 regions, has four. so we have one from hawai'i, and one from arizona, and two from california, being the bigger state. for a number of years i was the alternate, and recently became the board -- took the board seat. so what had happened the staff for nfra was asked for the names of people of potential invitees, and gave the president and two of the vice presidents names, and i am one of the vice presidents, and that is how, they took all three of them, thank you very much. it was somewhat difficult because the conference was right in the middle of the national association conference which is held in philadelphia. so -- but, that's when the president was available. so that's what we did. so we were, a number of staff and myself were in philadelphia for the conference, where we did win an aw

the u.s. state of california. back to my graphics and you can see the monitor indicating that exceptional drought taking place across central and northern half of california. in fact, so far, to date we have 5.6 million acres of wildfires over the western u.s. that's about the same size as new jersey. you can see they are trying to contain these fires, even from above. unfortunately it is not working too well for some of the areas like the rocky fire in lake county as well as the frog fire where 480 acres have been burned. unfortunately there was a casualty with one of the firefighters starting to put out the flames there. you can see the stronger winds impacting this region. there's some dry heat. lightning that is possible across the mountainous regions that could spark more wildfires in this area. just unbelievable photos coming out of that region. natalie, that flame encompassing that house, there were three structures burned so far with that particular fire. >> when will it end? >> when will it end, probably
