win in the caribbean do as the caribbean stew. and that involves accepting tobacco and when europeans involved, right, the same thing was chocolate. chocolate part of the sociability rituals of these groups. but there's kind of the split reaction. i'm making it sound like they were immediately very welcoming to that and that wasn't the case. on the one hand, they sort of were exposed to it and sort of consumed in situations, but they also were very suspicious of it as well. tobacco, smoking a something for them a sort of reminiscent of things they thought about as witchcraft. and they also clued on pretty soon the tobacco and chocolate were not only important, but were also part of native religion. and part of the mission of these europeans was to bring their religion to a. and so it was very disconcerting to look at the substances, they described it as kind of idolatry and daemonic diablo some and so forth. so you have this kind of almost schizophrenic reaction on the one hand on the frontier they are using it. on the other hand,

as for the americans, keeping an eye on the caribbean. we have tropical storm maria with us, slowly moving from the caribbean islands, heading northward. looks like it may brush past bermuda. scientists looking like it is not going to be intensifying much more, likely maintaining status as tropical storm system in the next few days. it is a slow moving system. that means rainfall is lingering across the islands. looking at plenty of rainfall for puerto rico, hispaniola, parts of the bahamas. flood risk and landslide risk remains high as rains continue. for central america, showers still widespread through the area, and mexico, seeing more of that impacting areas along the western coastline. for north america, we're looking at this low that will be moving through ontario tonight, heading towards quebec, eastern canada, bringing in widespread rain. behind that, another system is going to drop in towards ontario. so it is not going to dry out too much more here. some areas will be looking at chillier conditions. snow is actually possible her

. >> you say the caribbean islands. >> a good rule of thumb is to think about the destinations that eithermer or winter are full of travelerers. the caribbean islands is a great example of that. where i found great deals in the caribbean were in the bahamas and u.s. virgin islands in. the bahamas in september average hotel rates 12% less than in the summer which was already the off-season for the caribbean. average rates come in around $207 a night for the bahamas in september. in u.s. vir and islands your best bet is october where average rates are down 27% from summer rates. coming in around $137 a night. >> nice. you're saying september and october are the best months. what if the beach isn't your thing. what if you want to go skiing? >> the key to get the really great deals if you want to go for a fall trip is to hit these mountain destinations actually before the ski resorts open in late november, early december. going when the aspens are changing. you can still go hiking, mountain biking experiencing fall festivals in breckenridge and vail. average rates in tum ser for breckenridge f

on the caribbean island of aruba. robyn gardner went missing august 2nd and today island authorities took the extraordinary step of staging a re-enactment of her final hours, where she went and what she did in the company of a man she met online, a man who is now behind bars. here's abc's matt gutman for our series "crime and punishment." >> reporter: nearly seven weeks since robyn gardner disappeared from this idyllic beach, investigators work to re-create the nightmare step by step from the moment gardner and her companion, gary giordano, arrive to his shirtless dash for help as seen in this surveillance video. through this evening's reconstruction of gardner's august 2nd disappearance, police hoped to piece together the jigsaw of evidence they have into a picture that could do two things. reveal what happened to gardner, missing but not ruled dead, and determine whether a crime was committed on this beach. they can now identify less than a two-hour period and try to re-create exactly where they were at about 4:12 p.
