the coastal areas of north carolina. i mean, these are where large populations of german and scottish immigrants had settled so, you know, there's some hope there that the british can get a really good stronghold. so by the fall of 1775 loyalist recruitment was going quite well, i mean, that's why we have for example that first battle of 96, you know, there's an effort to disrupt some of the loyalist efforts some of the snow campaign. we're disrupting the loyalist recruitment. so even though the battle of the first battle of 96 ended in a truce. the british confidence was still really high at that point in time. i mean who wouldn't want to capture some of those wealthy colonial ports like savannah or charleston for their fabulous navy navy to be able to dock at with more and more troops. i mean this was still a possibility. but remember some of those early battles in the south. some of them were pretty significant defeats. they just couldn't even though this one was a truce. they just couldn't get that stronghold. so like

georgia or the carolinas. it protected the caribbean colonies from the rebelling american colonies and kind of created a little bit of a buffer for them. so that's the story. the most briefest of stories about those two colonies. so what with this one? this is the biggest misconception that i found. everything was happening in the north, everything was won in the north. it is because of the north and everything that happened up there that we are-the only reap we won the war. you can see, and thanks to the musical hamilton, more of this misconception is reaching a modern audience. so let's talk about the fact that the southern theater had as much impact as the northern colonies. the politics of boston and new york, they were just one driving force before the start of the war. you have taverns and town halls in charleston and savannah that are having that same influx of revolutionary ideas. and they're adding fuel to that overall idea of let's start this revolution. the politics in the south are largely controlle

it's not just flooding in florida, it's flooding into the carolinas and virginia, as well. now along the track, we could see as much as four to eight inches of rain, some places seeing a little bit more than that with saturated ground in florida. that is going to cause flooding. also the biggest problem is storm surge. generally two to five feet. some places will see likely the five feet of storm surge, and here's the reason why -- the storm's only passing a few miles offshore. as it passes offshore, we have winds coming in from the south and southwest. now in the intercoastal waterway and especially in the tampa area, there are lots of nooks and crannies. lots of back bays and inlets. when you force water into a very narrow area, it's got nowhere to go, it's forced upward and inundates coastal communities. that happens often in the tampa bay area with a storm of this magnitude, as much as five feet of storm surge possible. as far as wind gusts, they are strong enough to knock down trees and power lines. we're likely going to lose power at times. those gusts anywhere from 55

this is played out brutally throughout the carolinas during the latter part of the war, it's going to play out in new jersey, it's going to play out along the frontier. for many people your enemy is whichever side your neighbor might happen to pick. if you've got a problem with the guy, if you -- you know, years ago he stole land from you or you've gotten into it over cattle or whatever other personal problems you might have with these people, that could definitely play out kind of under the guise of this conflict between rebels and loyalists in the sense that, you know, it gives you an opportunity -- it gives you kind of legal cover to exact retribution. so all of these factors as i said many of these can be intertwined, many of these overlap, but they are going to be important motivators for loyalists. you know, i would say that there's just as many motivations as there were loyalists. everybody has their own kind of combination of these factors that play into their decision. so with that i said we're going to look at two events that occurred in the mid-atlantic in 1781 and the reas

in the carolinas and in western virginia, many of the scots are going to be associated with loyalism. in virginia, in a lot of 18th-century documents the word scotsman or scot is almost always associated with being a tory or a loyalist. religious groups like quakers, nonviolent pacifist groups, their nonviolence will be seen as kind of a suspicious trait, a backdoor into passive loyalism. these people do not want to support the war effort against the british. therefore, they must be with the british. lastly, simply opportunism. a lot of people will be a loyalist when the british army is in the neighborhood. and then when the continental army comes marching through they will all of a sudden change their tune. this is perhaps, i think, one of the most misunderstood aspects of loyalism and something we will see in the events that we talk about is that loyalism is not a static thing. it is not set in stone. people's political convictions waiver over time. they can change over time. there is definitely a sliding scale or spectrum of loyalist versus patriot support. and one of the biggest f
