category 4? wind speed. the weather channel's mark elliott shows us exactly what that means in terms of damage. >> let's start off with a category 1 storm. and the damage here not too bad. a couple of shingles fall off. we can have some palm fronds bending in the wind but everything basically remains intact. category 2, that's where you really start to feel it. look at the windows of the house. they can be hit from debris from the outside and already start breaking in a category 2. your trees are significantly bent over in the wind, and the siding of the house itself can break, flapping there in the wind, adding to those eerie noises inside. category 3, i've heard only a category 3, but it's not only anything except really bad news. in a category 3, you can have the door of the house blown in because the winds get so strong. you can have the roof of the house start to flap up and down in the wind as it lifts off those weak points. and a lot of those trees start to fall. category 4, the damage is even worse. you

4 right on the coast. now category 3, makes a world of difference and has so far, but as we go through the rest of today, the possibility of that destruction and damage is not over with yet. i want to show you computer models and one of the things we've been noticing, they've been a little off. if the models start off, the solutions they are going to give us will be off. this is the position of the hurricane right now. all of our computers started their initialization of where they started their equations closer to the coast, so all of these lines like this, these have trended offshore, too. on a hurricane, the strongest winds are on the northeast side. this is keeping all the strongest winds off the coast. we no longer think this is going to be historic for wind damage or major for wind damage. may be a minor to moderate on a hurricane scale as far as wind damage goes. one thing of great concern is approach to the coastal areas here from georgia and all of south carolina, all models still think it's close, even if it

the overnight low. hurricane matthew say major category 4 hurricane and the eye has crossed haiti and taking aim at cuba, that would be a direct hit late after this afternoon or tonight. and it may fluctuate in strength a bit it's a category 4 hurricane, and the central bahamas by evening. the new model run suggests it's a category 4 off the coast of florida as we get up to the florida coast and georgia. this could go anywhere in the wide range, again that is friday morning off the coast of southern georgia. it now looks like it makes landfall on saturday morning as a category 3 and degenerating to a 2. probably not too far from the border, a little landfall furnish south of the u.s., that helps us in one way and the longer it stays over land, when it reemerges around the chesapeake bay on saturday night, by early sunday morning. it's probably down to a category 1, here is the big change in the track, the most likely scenario to us is near rehoboth beach, delaware and then 50 to 60 miles off the coast that would be 90 miles per hour around the center of the storm. inland or along the coast we would get

1 hurricaine along the coast of florida and a strong category 3. ve already realized hurricaine-force winds across many locations so these are really the impacts going forward basically from the storm -- from the cape canaveral region, the space coast northward, and into georgia and south carolina, heavy rains, the potential for weak tornadoes to spin up right along the coastline, damaging winds. of course we talked a lot benefit storm surge and we're going to get into some detail there and we cannot forget about the potential of flash flooding, as well, considering that a significant amount of rain will be dropped out of this storm in a short period of time. it's a slow-mover and that means flooding will be a concern on top of the storm surge threat. here's the latest from the national hurricaine center. a strong category 3, winds sustained 120-miles-per-hour, gusts near 160, but i would say it's pretty safe to say that the bulk of the strongest storms are -- strongest winds are just offshore. needless to say, they're still getting very strong wind

category 3. you can't just measure the storm by a category. sandy, which a lot of folks across the northeast say is a benchmark for the worst storm they experienced was a cat 1. because this is a category 3, we can't let our guard down. the strongest of the winds have remained offshore, we think it's going to change in the next couple hours. you can see the well defined eye. the strongest of the winds right now and the potential for storm surge, 6-11 feet of storm surge. it could be devastating for florida and georgia because of the coastline. a new advisory coming out at 5:00 a.m. which will give a lot of details on the track, where the storm is going and the models as well. the storm, again, just off the coast of melbourne, florida. there's cape canaveral. this could take a direct hit from the storm, which would be historic. let's look at wind gusts. a major hurricane and the core of the wind right there. it looks like it comes very close in the next couple hours. will it make land fall? that's not the story. it's the strongest core of winds
