there was an analysis on the 2008 march updates to the census data and demonstrated the second interesting point which is beyond this economic and fiscal analysis that immigrants provide an extraordinarily important component to the economy which is called heightened mobility of labor. most of us who are not immigrants, and particularly those of us who have recent purchased a house or have a mortgage, we can't move around as easily. it turns out that immigrants are able and willing to move to places with high demand for jobs and leave places with low demand for jobs. this is extremely important because as an economy tries to pick itself up off the ground, we know one of the catch 22's is that in certain areas, a business can get started if it can get at certain types of labor. it has to wait for that labor to show up. then it can't employ, say, for example, the architect to redesign the new restaurant that's going to open if it can't get the right people into the restaurant to hire and work there. this mobility of labor has been radically changes in the united states because the housing co

>> it is from the 2010 census data most recently released. again i thought it was interesting that of the approximately 123,000 owner occupied units in san francisco, about 26% of those owner occupied units on their buildings for rian clear. about 74% have a mortgage. of the 74% that have a mortgage if we compare what percentage of those are also burdened by their mortgage, they pay over 35% of housing costs, it is 40% of those individuals. here you see that no surprise, although the median sales price for a home has dropped dramatically from 837,000 to 668,000, all that means is that houses that were astronomically out of reach are now still out of reach. you can see that for 80% ami, there is a $390,000 affordability gap. even at 90% there is a $112,000 affordability gap. this is for a two-bedroom in terms of the median sales price and the ami is based on a three- person family. now, for 80% ami, a low income family could afford only -- percent. only 7% of the homes in 2011 would be affordable to people at 80% ami, you have a greater percent

i spent an entire chapter in the book analyzing the data from the 1860sen says. i thought it was 1860 census. a lot of people said i skipped over that chapter where you had a lot of the charts and statistics but i thought it was my very best chapter, i looked at the data, analyzed it and i think i presented it in some unique ways that will give you insight into american society right before the war between the states. finally, i used a lot of existing scholarly research from the classic early slave studies by u.b. phillips to more contemporary scholars like eugene genovesi and ira berlin. i also used a book called "time on the cross." if you have not read that book and want to know about slavery, get "time on the cross" which was published in the 1970's. i use many, many other studies and different scholarly looks at the american slavery. i thought i'd spend theme i hav by reviewing some of the myths and some of the realities. but before we do that, we've got to do a mind shift right now. any time you're going back in history, you've got to change your mindset. like a quote from a french phi
