it was a current that ran from the ocean along the beach front pushing them almost up channel. and as the landing craft once they were oriented three miles off the beach having now debarked from the transports and the lsts into the landing craft and gone to the jump off positions two to three miles off the beach and they begin to make that last dash, that current pushed them all to the left, and although they had landmarks that were supposed to guide them in terms of finding the beach, that horrific nafl naval pom bardment meant the beech was shrouded in splok and bebrie. so what they did was they'd aim themselves at the beach and open the throttle but with the current pushing them to the left, they ended up being a half mile or in some cases even further west of where they were supposed -- excuse me, east. got my numbers reversed there, east of where they believed they were supposed to land. so now they get ashore on utah beach and look around. none of the landmarks they had studied in the classroom or on the maps assembled for them by the aerial photographers, none of those la

swimming the english channel is no easy feat. it's 21 miles wide at its most narrow point, but it's not a straight shot across. strong currents can push swimmers from side to side for miles making the swim much longer. high tides can also create towering swells not to mention the english channel is one of the busiest shipping lanes in the world. while devin has been preparing with the trainer in baltimore more than 1,500 miles away in colorado his siblings 19-year- old dustin and 21-year-old danielle are training together. danielle, an accomplished college swimmer, is familiar with the challenge. she successfully conquered the channel last summer and did very well. danielle holes the record for the fastest english swimming channel time for any american man or woman completing it in nine hours, 49 minutes. >> i talk with them a lot about training and what they need to do and kind of what you go through mentally and physically out there. >> she said it's a mental challenge. it is hard. it is long. it is get tedious and it is cold. >
