we call the richmond district the new chinatown in the 1980's at that time.ghborhood, and discovering san francisco in the 1980's as i grew up, but i also have been very active as a community organizer. i worked in chinatown, and some first jobs also at the mental health center in the richmond area multi services in the 1980's, and i was also a staff are at the chinatown youth center -- i was also a staffer. a lot of my work has been supporting community empowerment, especially in an immigrant and people of color communities. most recently, i have been teaching at san francisco state. i ran the immigrant rights coalition in the city in the 1990's for several years. i'm also an immigration attorney, and a lot of my passion is supporting in power met for immigrant communities in the city as well. >> why did you choose to live in san francisco? supervisor mar: a lot of people bring this up, but is one of the most exciting, culturally diverse places in the world. learning about new cultures and people from different parts of the world, like a gateway neighborhood

as the freeway was being built, chinatown had no connection to the waterfront. so to me, i using the catalyst of what ever other development begins to be discussed, how to build connections is really important. it remains one of the dentist neighborhoods. our people have no place to go. we have chinese playgrounds and the recreation center that is being renovated right now. all they have to do we access -- there is no plan to build anything to connect those spaces to the residential neighborhoods. that is what it takes listening to the plan encourage adoption of proposals that will help to enhance the waterfront and make meaningful improvements. chinatown is also a tourist destination, and anything that also connects the economics of the neighborhood is really important. we don't want chinatown to remain in ethnic enclaves. -- an ethnic enclave. we need to make -- recognize the connection. that is my two cents. president olague: it is great to see you again. we say that you take the 15 with a 30 bus. chinatown, you never go east. they have the buses to go to fisherman's wharf. it is so boring to go. i practically cry listening to the seniors who had no concept of walking down washington because this was so dead. and an old man who takes his kids to fisherman's wharf talks about how there is no place to set and there is a long walk. it is easy going down but going up may be a problem. and you listen to people saying that there is nothing for them. we need to have something that is not boring so we can sit down as we are walking down from senior housing on broadway. it is like we have this enormous water from resource and this is cut off from the people who live close to it, who have no access to this. the freeway ramps really cut people off. they're good at moving a lot of people in cars. if we do not use time in the next year to change this right now, we are blowing an opportunity. we have to take seriously the improvements that we are talking about on broadway, and on washington in particular. there is no excu

golden gateway started a scholarship program for young people, particularly in our neighbors of the chinatown area to attend a kids camp. thanks to our supporters and the nations, we were able to send out a number of young kids who can't, and this year, we were able to expand that to include not only chinatown, but young people south of market street. we feel it has been a very successful program, and the closing out of this club i would be real such programs, and it would never come back if it were done at half the size and that is planned. 700 people have been attending this camp. we are now able to provide the space for a number of young people that could not come before. no matter how many thousands of kids we have been able to support. you translate that into families. i heard a couple weeks ago that a number of you discussing why families are leaving the city. we recognize housing and education are important. very important. the recreational space and the limited space is also very important. taking away this area would be devastating not only to the community, but to the hundreds of fa

you build it here, in glen park, the mission, chinatown. it builds up the strength of the city. it comes back to our department's opening up their resources, not protecting it like other bureaucratic agencies have historically done. we've said we can do it and be challenged with a grant program completely open to everybody. these things are worth the $1 million it looks like today. it is worth 10 times more in building camaraderie and companionship with our neighbors. i want to emphasize that. i want to represent that by giving what i can do to reflect our appreciation for the leadership. it is a certificate of honor to julian for his leadership on this project and many other projects that have kept this community working and expanding and growing. there is a design around his leadership. by voice vote as the mayor and city administrator that when you have strong communities, things like disasters, we will have strong neighborhoods to help us recover back. this is the beginning of that. i want to give you this certificate on behalf of the city, parks trust, the challenge grant p
