i have enjoyed very much the 39 years that i have worked for the chinatown child development center and for the city and county of san francisco. being a clinical social worker has been a very great privilege and honor for me and also working at the chinatown child development center in chinatown where i grew up has been a privilege. i have learned so much from the families and the children and youth. every day has been a pleasure for me. and i've learned very much from the mentors and my colleagues. you know, oftentimes where you'll hear comments about, oh, those city workers, but i have worked with the most dedicated, the most passionate colleagues that you will ever see. they don't go just the extra mile, but they will go the extra 2 to 10 miles for their clients, for the families that we work with every day. so, you know, as supervisor chiu mentioned, i have a very, very active volunteer life. so, i've been telling people that i will be retiring from my day job. and, so, i hope to see many of you, you know, in my volunteer life. thank you so very much for this very great honor. i'm

. >> it the locked in chinatown and near walter alley it's a living room of chinatown residents next to some time. the restroom was built in 1990 and quickly became the most uses restroom in our public parks. in under the 2008 bond the restroom task force evaluated the restroom and recommended to increase the capacity. through community meetings we went through a planning process and recommended replacement of the restrooms in order to increase the capacity. on the overhead okay. our images of that restroom building that was designed and approved by this commission and the arts commission that is the modern interpretation of chinese architecture it is increasing the men's room from 4 to 6 and the women's from 2 to 6 and recreational use. the estimated cost of the project at the time of the commission approval of the time was $800,000 plus we put the project out to bid twice. the first time was in may of 2014 we received bids four bids the bids expedite our project and the average was $1.47 million the high costs for the architecture metal work and the c m u this is what the building i

she's the director of the chinatown children's development center, but i think her history and the information i'm going to give about her life should hopefully inspire you as well. she's been guiding and teaching and mentoring so many people within the community for years, especially her dedicated staff at the chinatown children's development center which provide outpatient mental health services to children, youth and families, parent education, and consulting and capacity building within chinatown for many, many organizations. nancy's own clinical work as a social worker spans many generations and improved the lives and the mental health of countless san franciscans. after i am grating from guangdong china as a toddler, nancy learned valuable lessv ons from her hard working parents and extended family. neighbors and mentors, she is really humble. it is important to acknowledge her leadership. she credits her own leadership from lessons learned from treasured teachers and professors at st. mary's school, lowell high school, san francisco state, u.c. berkeley, and from many other places. and

they didn't have anything to do with the immigrants who lived there. before chinatown was quarantined, there was a huge backlash going on against the chinese people who were emigrating to the united states. there was the 1882 chinese exclusion act which basically ended chinese immigration for ten years. prohibited chinese people from becoming u.s. citizens. that was passed by congress, signed into law by then-president chester alan arthur. there was a general sentiment back then that chinese-americans were taking over the country. there were too many of them and also a strong sense that they were the source of terrible diseases. diseases like leprosy and smallpox. you name it. when a chinese man was suspected of maybe having died of the bubonic plague in chinatown, in san francisco, that took everything to a whole different level. that was when they decided to cordon off chinatown from the rest of the city. no chinese-americans were allowed to leave that area. they were locked in. of course, that only fueled the idea that chinese-americans as a whole, as an immigrant g
