the faithful in cincinnati took a moment to pay tribute to 17-year-old matt james who died after plunging from a florida hotel balcony during spring break. investigators in florida believe he had been drinking just before the accident. had also been recruited to play for notre dame next year. ron claiborne reports. >> reporter: in one horrifying instant it all ended. the promising life of a gifted high school football star, headed to one of the great college football programs in america, matt james plunged five stories from this hotel balcony to his death. panama city police say witnesses say the 17-year-old appeared to have been drunk. >> apparently the young man was intoxicated, had become belligerent. he was on the balcony of the hotel room with one of his friends. they were trying to calm him down. >> reporter: in february, james had signed a letter of intent to attend and play for notre dame. that may have led to what looks like a celebration that went horribly awry. >> the young man got irritated and leaned over the balcony, as he was leaning over the rail, unfortunately he tumbled

i saw an example of the improved care in 21st century the liver yesterday when i was in and deliver yesterday when i was in cincinnati in visit a children's hospital. a very innovative technology's system, dealing with some of the sickest kids not only in the ohio region, but they gather children who come there from across the country and from international sources because they are renowned for doing some very complicated surgeries. i visited the neonate as intensive care unit, and part of why -- the neonative intensive care unit, and part of why they're so successful is the electronic records. they've had 1000 days in hospital without any safety incidents. they do it with an automated check list that appears at every incubator, at every crib, reminding providers of the various steps of have to be taken iquitos little setting a safe and secure as possible. -- have to be taken to keep the hospital saving -- hospital setting as safe and security as possible. we have health technology grants we have health technology grants that create health i.t. no carr2 of those building blocks of 2009 are now the templates the new r

a red flag of so you really cannot see -- cannot have the wrong medicine order for that patient population. in a hospital like, again, at cincinnati children's wear a visit yesterday, they have a bar coded dispensing system where you cannot release the drug from the dispensing system unless it is bar coded. the baby i was visiting, along with his mom, is four weeks old. he has a wrist band that is part coated. the nurse indicated to me that he passed -- that she has to barcode his wrist and dispenser, or the drug is not released. that in an of itself i think is a huge step forward. many hospitals have electronic records, but not enough. as part of what is the ball. 100,000 people a year die in american hospitals, not because of what brought them to the hospital, but what happens to them in the hospital. hundreds of thousands more have very costly, very consuming injuries. it is a challenge we have taken on with the american hospital association. there are some pretty simple checklist that have been shown to dramatically reduce hospital- associated infections. two-thirds do not require new equipment, do not require fancy training.
