why did you choose to stay in the city >> i love the city. i'm very passionate about the city. n to focus on children and the families. i keep on asking the same question when i was younger why would i want to focus my efforts in san francisco. are there other places in the world where i could make a difference. i'm talking about the late 50s and 60s. there was at that time, a lot of population coming in from china. it was an opportunity for me to help people that were struggling in awe second amendment and getting used to things over here. >> what motivated you to get involved in politics. >> part of my motivation i guess you have to look at where i started. i as i mentioned he earlier i wanted to help people and at the time it was children and family. after many, many years of serving people i realized in providing services that somehow, i have to impact the decision-makers so i started advocating on issues i cared about. i was somewhat effective and wouldn't it be nice if i could do something different i ran an organization for 20 years. i felt i needed to grow as much as the

here we have data from the city. we also have data from private data sources that read -- not going to mess with it. there's one of the variables now, the bottom you see there is median household income. we're pulling in all these different data sources, creating a beautiful visualization to tell a story at the neighborv level of how the city is growing. and some of the things you're seeing on the map here are a pipeline of information about both residential permits over the past decade or so, how has the city allocated permits throughout different neighborhoods in the city. and some of the other things you're seeing on the map is the approved businesses, the businesses are currently doing business in the city. one of the things we said once we started visualizing on the map the slow and more rapid growth of residential -- residential property in soma and then in 2011 you just saw obviously a huge residential boom in the downtown area. so, we've just actually -- we're a company in southern california. we just relocate

is, there are a lot more people working downtown in the rest of the city. the same is true for the hotel jobs and not quite as dramatic. and 68 percent, verses 60. and if i may. and we get the retail data and it applies to the people who work in the offices for the companies that are offices. >> and that is a good question, and technically and always separated out and it was on the building and the retail and also downtown, you do have a higher insensety retail activity. and so the more employees per square foot makes the sense. >> and also under the fiscal revenue where you are getting the sales and property and taxes, and those are all showing the increased amount. and could we in a separate statistic show to show the difference between downtown and city wide. >> a really interesting statistic on page six and on table seven which is employment and downtown and the c3 zone which shows that under production and repair and pdr. and in 2010, and we have a number of 17,320 which has grown, and 25,000 and 54. and which is an 8 percent growth, and it is interesti

this is what innovation does in the city. it gets everybody to actually work at even higher levels in government in a public-private partnership with companies like google and all the rest of the wonderful members of sf city to do what we can do and to do more than we think we can. in order to bring benefits, bring equity, bridge not only the digital divide, but perhaps bring the whole innovative spirit to every community in san francisco. this is what i think this wi-fi effort of our 31 parks is saying. and the nice thing about it is that when you study what we're going to do here and accomplish with the 31 parks, and that we along with our technology partners, our communications partners, our department leaders, new ones as well as old ones, are saying this is just the beginning. this is literally the beginning of a continued effort to innovate, innovate, and innovate. and i like what mark said. not only are there no strings attached. really the benefits are targeted at our residents and our visitors, but that the only thing

this is necessary for nonprofits to stay afloat and the city can afford it. we ended last year with a $300 million surplus and controller surplus this year. furthermore the mayor's budget didn't have this operations for contractual services will amount to 13.four increase from last year. an analysis we put together identifies budget savings. i will share with you some highlights. the mayor's budget includes total appropriations to the general fund reserve of $76 million. the board can reduce appropriations to budget reserves by $15 million still leaving $61 million in appropriations. in the two years ending last june the city averaged $64 million in unspent appropriations for services and supplies. the board could re-appropriate 16 of the $64 million in unspent prior year numbers and lastly by adopting moratorium on new management positions the city's general fund would realize $3.2 million in savings. with these options it shows the board has the ability to fund the 4% increase and it's the right thing to do for the city's most vulnerable populations and the
