the blaze. it broke out around 4:15 this afternoon. two homes destroyed. this happening on claytonhe base of mt. hamilton in the east san jose foothills at the base there. nbc bay area is there. we know two homes are gone. what's the update? >> getting here, jessica and raj, we've got helicopters overhead. we're talking about crowded airspace as they try to get an idea of what is going on after two homes here burned. i'm going to stand back and show you the active scene on the side of the hillside. we've been watching the incredible work by the firefighters. amazing as you see the hot spots explode in front of them, brush ignite and climb up the side of this hill. as you can see at the top of the hill firefighters working with all of their might to safe this home that is at the very top of this blaze. what you can't see is down in the valley where now smoke just remains. this is where two homes are a total loss. neighbors in this area say everybody here knows everyone. in fact, standing by here with me now is robert long who s. has done a lot of fire prevention in this area. robert

cal fire crews and the san jose fire department were busy fighting the massive fire on clayton road. the call went out around 4:30 and by the time firefighters arrived, the two homes were already fully engulfed with fire. you can see just how bad the damage. the frames of the homes are all that remain after the quick moving fire came through and destroyed everything in the way. these images from our helicopter partners at abc 7 tell the story of destruction and the firefighting effort that kept the flames from spreading any further than they did. in addition to the destroyed homes, several cars were consumed by the fire. look! you can see just how hot this fire was. the aluminum wheels and the engine block of this car melted because of the intense heat from the fire. crews were working until sunseta race against time. the scene was spooky. firefighters images shown through the back lit smoke of the house fire. fortunatly, nobody was hurt. fire crews will remain here on scene over night to make sure any hot spots don't flare up. the cause of the fire is under investigation. i'm jeff bu
