the campaign started. look, this is not a surprise. it's not a surprise to hillary. it's not a surprise to the clinton campaign. otto lot to d bernie sanders is nearby. no democrat has won new hampshire or iowa with more than 50% unless they from the state. this is what the clinton campaign was predicting. people have thought that the clinton campaign and hillary herself came into this expecting a coronation. in fact, it's been the opposite. it has been the media and the republicans talked about how hillary wanted or expected a coronation. history is against this, chris, as you know going into this and expecting for voters to hand over a third democratic term that is not something that history has seen has been easy. so hillary knew from the get go this was going to be a very hard fought proposition. they have baked this into their strategy. >> i want to stick with you for one second. you were her senior advisor during the 2008 campaign. this time around was going to be different. we heard how hillary clinton was going to be more open and assessable. at least when it comes to the media, we haven't seen that yet.

look, the clinton campaign has done a lot of focus grouping before all this happened. they knew where the heart of the party was, they knew the message that bernie sanders was going to be out there campaigning, against against wall street, billionair billionaires. that's the same message as elizabeth warren. voters basically transferred that are feelings, but they knew that, they sort of thought it was a temporary thing, that people thought hillary clinton, it was sort of her turn, her time. they know they have to ratchet up their activity and make a stronger case. that's why we'll see more of the her in the coming weeks than we've seen yet. she'll by taping the ellen degeneres show tomorrow, and another interview on wednesday. they're trying to put other out there more. >> not a good time for her to have a raspy voice. it sounded earlier like she was losing it. she should drink in hot tea with honey, my mother would say. bernie sanders is move up, but does she have ha base in other states? >> that's the problem, some candidates top out at 20% or 30% nationally. they ca
