we've got one area of low pressure well to the north the coastline of washington. then you see that to the south. i think that small low it's going make for some dangerous weaer by tomorrow morning. right now you can see the rain line kind of to the north right now. we've showers further south into san francisco in across the peninsula, but mostly activity a little bit further north. the winds are beginning to ramp up. now we've from 40 50 mile an hour gusts. we're going to talk about more about that guys coming up in a few minutes. >> look forward to that. thanks, lourdes as we continue our coverage tonight in marin where kron four's dan kerman has more on how folks have been preparing for the rain. the wind and king tides as expected the manzanita parking lot was already flooded in parts by the noon hour. signs warn people of the pending king tides and crews were on hand removing what debris they could before the entire area is under water. >> but those king tides don't just impact this area. >> parson point city, there's parts of north san pedro rode out by china

maybe some 30, 40 mile an hour gusts along the coastline. so the national weather service has also issued a flood advisory across much of the north bay that extends now in toward richmond, oakland, san francisco, into daly city has received some heavier amounts of rain moving in, not expected to massive flooding, but definitely some rapid rises on many of the creeks and streams around the bay area. super traveling around up there tonight. you've got to be extra careful next couple of days. things try to settle down a little bit tomorrow before more rain picks up tomorrow night. bigger storm system on sunday. and then the good news is as we head toward the end of the year, finally, we get a nice dry break and hopefully things are going to settle down. finally released about a week or so before we get back into perfect. that's what i think a lot of people waiting for. but you know what talking about this, though? it's making me want to visit. i've only been to tahoe during the summer. one minute i was moving here. so. >> this is the time it got

it selective along the coastline. we will continue to see that in the overnight hours tonight and throughout this week. >> that speaks to my next question. whether you live in the bay area, california or not, everyone in the world knows san andreas fault. what is the concern when you have this maker shifting so close ? >> the strength of it. this is just offshore of the fault line that runs along the coast. the seven portions of boyd county by the coastline near bodega bay, down into san francisco. we are used to seeing earthquakes along the fault line. this causes a lot of concern especially for the aftershocks that are going to linger. still shows a 99% chance issued by the usgs issued by a magnitude 3.0 earthquake. we are watching that in live time right now. excuse me, the usgs in the last two minutes with a 3.9 and 5.0 earthquake. these are the communities we keep a close eye on it right now. the warning in pacifica with gianna franco in that area. do we have you on the phone? >> yeah, hi. >> thank goodness they'v

we've seen numerous storms off the coastline. we've come a break for most of those and tell just a day or so ago. but now we're seeing that a return of that storm track and that's going to impact the bay-area those storms rolling on in bringing us some more rain and the swells continuing to move in along the coastline. you can see the bush just off the coast. you got to happen the south. that one right now currently expended waves right around 20 feet. the one in san francisco of coastal ocean beach to 21. and then you get a little further north toward point race. a little bit larger there at 22 feet. but off the coastline, even further receive even larger waves of 25 feet. building waves expected throughout the night tonight and tomorrow to not only here, but around much of the state has that next storm system begins to bear down on the bay area that is going to bring with it. another round of some heavy rainfall as we look toward tomorrow morning on christmas eve. and then we've got more storms line up after that. we'll talk mor

the biggest threat, however, is the one that lies next to our coastlines on the west coast. and that's the what's called cascadia subduction zone. that's a very big fault that stretches all the way from northern california, all the way to canada, and that we know can can generate a very large earthquake and very large tsunami that has not happened during the historical times, during the written time of the west coast. so we don't have exact historical evidence of the tsunami, but we do have paleo tsunami evidence that showed the tsunami like that happened many times in, you know, a few thousand years before. so that area very prone to earthquakes near eureka. we live in earthquake country. so how do we know if there's been an earthquake? what if we don't get an alert? we're by the beach. we don't have our phones. there's no sirens going off. most cities don't have that. what are signs we can look out for? that a tsunami may be approaching. and this is a big one because, you know, a lot of people, the first thing they asked was, is this alert real? but also keep in mind, not

i was driving along the coastline. you could see just these huge waves pounding across the rocks dangerous out there for sure. as we're seeing some of those over 20 feet, maybe some 30 footers, you get out to mavericks. we start to talk about 50 and some 60 foot waves. so these are the kind of building swells that they will also cause some coastal flooding to go along without some of that will actually crest some of the berms as we head throughout the night tonight and into early tomorrow morning. so if you are somebody that was out at the beach, you could be walking along. and if you weren't paying attention, a large wave could come in and knock it down and drag out the water. boy, there's just not much you can do. should that happen? i would say just stay away from the rocks right now. that's for sure. here's a look at some of current wave heights as you move yourself off the coastline here. we continue to see some of those waves building out there right now. in fact, just off the coast, some of that's well begin to m

it's a big-time swells moving along the coastline. in fact, the showers now picking up around the bay area so far fairly light that you see some yellow sells off the coastline, even the orange and those are some heavier cells out there just off the coast. and so that will bring some heavy amounts of rainfall is a start to push on shore. so some of those rain rates will likely be picking up. that's about a 3rd of an inch an hour. so that's gonna make things pretty slick out there. as we head through the evening. well, speaking of waves, of course, we saw what happened to the santa cruz will this past weekend. guess what? we're seeing another round of large waves being generated by these storms off the coastline right at the beaches so not huge just yet, but that is likely going to pick up. you're looking at some 9 foot swells in half moon bay in the san francisco, your day near point, raise that wealthy. but just off the coastline to our north there, get some 28 foot swells. kind of give you an idea of what is to come. so that being sai

nbc bay area's damian trujillo has been along the county coastline all day. the waves seem to be back to normal here along the san mateo county coastline. certainly, enough for the surfers to come out. the waves that were crashing onto the coastline earlier today, but not as much later on here this afternoon. but it was quite the scene here earlier in half moon bay as people tried to jump in their cars and head out of town because of the tsunami warning, there was never an official formal evacuation order given, but the folks still wanted to get out of town. they crammed up highway 92 to go over the skyline boulevard and into the highway 280 area here in the bay area and so they wanted to get out of town. some waited on the summit there of highway 35, and just to wait it out until they could feel safe to come back into half moon bay. some stayed in town. they went up to what's called the granada hills up here, higher elevation, just to makeke sure they were safe. a couple of issues here. one was the evacuation, the self evacuation that the residents conducted,

but we've got those big time winds off the coastline by the strong storms. and that is generating a very large. well, 20 to 22 foot waves moving in along the coastline into early tomorrow morning. but even in the afternoon tomorrow, you're going to see some more whites, la large swells, but the storm system rolling on through then the center, very low pressure kept the showers going this afternoon. that was even heavy at times. lot of snow up in the sierra. nevada are kind of in between systems. now, but it's not going to last very long. boy, this next storm system setting up. it is going to be a much more significant storm. you can see just developing off the coastline and as it's a strengthening right as it approaches the coastline, that's what it's going to come onshore. and it's going to pack a punch tomorrow. most of the rain located north of the golden gate bridge, although we could see some showers to start out the day elsewhere for the south. but really the rain parts iran, northern sonoma county, that's where you can see the heaviest amounts of rain

you see some yellow bands off the coastline. that's the main front just about the push onshore toward eureka and crescent city then and is diving south as we head throughout the night tonight into early tomorrow morning. and again unleashed some fairly decent amounts of rain rolling on through. you can see right there, some yellow, some orange, possibly some thunderstorms. that front begins to move on through system. here's some heavy rainfall early tomorrow morning. and then as we head through the morning that begins to move on out. and by the middle of the day, that turns more towards scattered showers. you see the snow begin to pile up in the high country. but the bay area drying out by tomorrow evening. and then as we get to christmas day, here's the good news. we're going to dry out if you're traveling on christmas day again, just like with the previous storm that moves by our storm moves by leaves behind some raindrops and then we have to deal with fog the next day. we're probably going to see that christmas day to some not

and that is certainly dangers along the coastline. here's a look at some of the latest waves of being picked up by our computer models. you can see for the most part, not gigantic along the coast. just that so far and a half moon bay, some of those waves to about 12 feet. that's still a very large wave in the san francisco 10. get her point. raise your about 10 feet as well. but off the coastline, a little further north were talking. 22 feet and then further around the pacific, much larger waves. and that's why the national weather service has issued this least sunday as we're ntil at -- expecting these waves that are well off the coastline of well over 20 feet, still push onshore and cause more problems out toward the beaches. in the meantime, these storms just continue to roll off the pacific and they continue to wind up all those waves outside. more rain is also coming our direction. we'll have more on that coming up in just a few minutes. >> all right. thanks, lauren swell. new at 10, a 19 year-old driver is arrested after this rol

as that energy is forced up against the coastline. d that's when you get the inundation that spreads well inland. so always take it seriously. if another tsunami warning is ever issued and you happen to live near the coastline, definitely move to higher ground. go about a mile inland. if you can make a plan to meet up with your family. a meeting point, always a good idea and look for warning signs. the sudden draining of the ocean water. because that's usually a sign that here comes that water. it's coming back in. a beautiful view. meanwhile, from our exploratorium camera right now, as we look across the bay this morning, we did have a lot of cloud cover and some fog. we even had a couple of sprinkles move through the bay area, but it didn't measure. there was trace amounts in half moon bay. as we take a look at the visibility right now, just over a mile in santa rosa with some thick fog starting to form. here's the system that is going to bring some changes for the first part of your weekend. it will cloud us up and temperatures are

so this is not just the immediate coastline. this could also affect some of the inland areas and some of the areas that are low lying along our coastline. that includes all of san francisco. so that means that anywhere close to the water, you need to move to higher ground in the city, as well as the east bay. this could force the water to come up higher for parts of the bay into the east bay as well. that includes alameda and oakland and then moving down toward hayward, union city, as well as parts of the bay for the south bay around alviso and those areas that are low lying. so if you are in this tsunami warning, you want to once again make sure that you are getting to higher ground. when we talk about earthquakes that are a 6.0, we only get about 120 of those on earth per year, and it's very strong when we take a look at how strong these magnitudes of these earthquakes can be. but we often talk about tsunamis and most people don't really know exactly what that is. it's basically an earthquake underwater where we get that fault

we know you. >> you had to be out there earlier today along the coastline. so, yeah, always. all right, lawrence, thank you. while the women's prison in dublin permanently closing, this comes almost 7 months after it was temporarily closed because of staff on inmate abuse. at least 8 employees at the dublin prison, including the former warden have been charged with sexually abusing inmates. 5 pleaded guilty. 2 were convicted the bureau of prisons said at this and to close the prison after an assessment identified considerable repairs are necessary. the agency says low staffing in the high cost of living in the bay area. also contributing to this decision. staff and inmates will be moved to other facilities. it's unclear when the prison will shut down for good. officials. the santa clara county superior court are warning people to be aware about scams involving jury service. the superior court said scammers are impersonating court officers by sending people pictures of fake badge numbers and then asking for personal information like social security numbers. court is reminding p

coast guard chopper fly overhead along the coastline here. to give you a sense of where we are, we are at fort point, which is right at the golden gate. if you take a look over here, you can see that the road to fort point for vehicles and for pedestrians has been closed that ordinarily a rather popular tourist spot, as we turn over a little bit to our right, you can see that that entire area has been completely evacuated because of that tsunami warning, which of course has now been lifted. you might have also seen some people gathering here in the area simply because they cannot get to fort point, right now. we do have a lot of people in the area who wanted to see if they could see any signs of. anything has now been lifted, but you can see where they're really looking as you look at fort point there on the edge there, you can see those waves coming in and a lot of people keeping a very close eye on that area to see if, in fact, we can see anything. just to give you a sense on what we did here. hold on. we're actually going to turn our camera

here's a look at some of the waves right now along the coastline right off our coast. not all that large. we're seeing some of the swells to 14 feet. that's a pretty decent swell. but you get a little further to the north and all of a sudden you're talking 27 feet and then further off the coastline, there's more storms generating this. well is out there in the middle pacific. and then we start to see more this well as moving toward. so the next 24 to 36 hours, we've got some 24 footers and large swells continuing. so the idea is that these storms out there in the middle of pacific are generating the swells. you get the winds out over open waters blowing across the distance. we call a and that's when you start to see all those beginning to build as those waves blown office and they get very large start to make their way toward the coastlines. you gotta be careful out toward the water's edge. big storms moving in and now we've got that rain moving into. so we've got some a moderate to some heavy amounts of rainfall now beginning to make its way it along the peninsula this

just a really pounding the coastline. 's a look at some of the wave heights that are moving in along the coast right now. in fact, seeing some of these waves right now and a half moon all that big, although it's going likely pick up now to 12 feet was a 9 early on today. just off the coastline. you can see some larger waves to 16 and little further north to 20. but further out in the middle, the pacific, you can see that big bull's eye out there that orange dot. and yeah, we are going to see some much heavier swells moving in along the coastline. and that's what we're watching out for those ones out there 29 feet right now have seen some over 30. so that is going to be moving in over the weekend. and that's why the advisory for those large waves continues until sunday. a stream of moisture. the storms rolling in across the pacific. and boy, once those winds get going, they can generate some big-time swells. the rain beginning to move in. now, though, into the bay area, more scattered most to heavy rainfall as northern cali

one off the coastline of washington. and then that secondary low for the south. that's going to swing ride in long our coast. i think that we're going to see a really strong round of the heaviest gusty winds awe head toward tomorrow morning. right now, that rain, you can see most of that north of the golden gate bridge. couple scattered showers further south of the focus really has been still to the north. most of has been fairly light so far. but that is going to ramp up. the winds also becoming a story. check out point reyes gpjust in this last hour, we've seen the winds ramp up from 40 the 50 miles per hour. now that is what we're expecting to move in along the coastline overnight tonight, some damaging winds will have more on that in the forecast coming up in a few minutes. all right, lawrence, thank you. our team coverage continues in the north bay, which is where we turn to kron four's dan kerman who is live tonight in mill valley. good evening, dan. >> good evening. definitely the calm before the storm here. we do feel winds picking up a little bit. but ri

and you can see that storm system off the coastline that was just going kind of clipped the bay area. then this one gets a little bit closer. maybe some showers as we head in toward friday, at least far northern california enough for here saturday. that changes the storm system begins to roll right on shore as we head in towards saturday morning. that'll open up the door to more rain expected late in the day on sunday. the focus will be north of the golden gate bridge, but they continue to just come right after another. another one on monday, a much more powerful one moving in with some heavy rain expected on tuesday morning on christmas eve. some snow in the sierra nevada dry on christmas day. and ironically, that may be the only dry day of the week as we're just gonna see storm after storm after storm come rolling through. so we're gonna start to add up some pretty impressive totals. think it's likely that we're really going to see some more flooding issues, at least in the north. they not the first storm that's going to very light, very light system. but after that, things really b

they're looking at some very large waves there along the coastline. some of those waves out toward the parts of santa barbara. some of those waves as much as 26 feet high. so 70 good time to stay away from the water's edge. >> that we want to be careful out there. thanks, lawrence. in the east bay tonight, police are investigating a shootout in pleasant hill that her child just before noon. they say people in 2 vehicles were shooting at each other at contra costa boulevard and vivian drive. they say a 7 year-old child was inside one of the involved vehicles and sustained some minor injuries. officers say the driver of one of the cars was later found in a white ford explorer. what the multiple bullet holes and suffering from a gun wound to the hand, investigators tell us this all began as a custody dispute between the parents of the child. both parents were arrested and booked into jail. traffic is flowing freely tonight at the call to caught tunnel tonight. this follows a frightening sight there this morning citizen app video capturing a mini van on fi

huge waves moving in along the coastline over the next few days. here is we're going to see. >> one looks like a large swells still building off the coastline, going to be moving on shore. but gale made a very important point to its not just those waves, but some of that debris in the water wonder sometimes you see some of those big logs as you walk down the beach. you wonder how they got there. will this all they get there? but once they're churning around him, that open water can be very, very dangerous. if you're out there, swimming outside tonight, we are looking at some clouds rolling in. the showers will begin to pick up just a bit, too. temperatures running generally in the 40's and 50's outside. but yeah, we're looking at that. high surf continue until least sunday morning as these waves that have been rolling across the pacific, really some very large systems out there. so here's a look at some of the waves that are moving along the coastline right now. some of those waves right look toward the beaches now in half moon bay. some of those a

a collapse and near disaster caused by the wild weather along the coastline. massive waves sent part of the santa cruz pier and several workers plunging into the ocean just after noon. a section of the pier that was under construction broke off and splashed into the water after being repeatedly hit by waves, sending three workers plunging into the water as well, we are told first responders managed to rescue all three of those workers, two engineers and a project manager. quickly. we lost a restroom, we lost pilings. we lost a crane. we lost a tractor. we lost a lot of things, but we didn't lose human beings and that's the good news. and that is really goodod ne. the entire wharf remains closed as crews inspect that damage. and coming up at 5:00, robert honda will join us with the latest on that collapse, including interviews with visitors at the end of the whar, who managed to get off the pier just in time. okay, so admire the beauty, but beware of the power that is the message along the coast today, as the storm front brings in those massive waves. high surf

so there could be some 20 foot plus waves moving along the coastline. out for that specially out toward the water's edge. right now. we've got a storm system just beginning to make its way in to see that rain and showers begin moving out there right now. but well, long train of moisture you can see well out in the pacific. you start to get subtropical tap little atmospheric river event trying to develop out there as well. and so we've got a whole other area of low pressure just developing out there. much larger storm going to be moving in, especially we head in toward lot a part of the weekend. so, yeah, we've got some plans. we're in for a wet period. i think next week we start out the new year. that's about probably a lot of sunshine and dry conditions. but yeah, the waves watch out. you got to be careful out there along the coastline. we've had some unfortunate incident. some people losing their lives being dragged away by some of the ways you want to be one of those folks. so be careful out there along the coastline. stay away from the media. water'

the quake and subsequent tsunami warning rattled nerves along the coastline, as you can imagine, and that led to a traffic jam getting out of some of the bay area coastal cities. let's bring in our damian trujillo live in half moon bay for us today. damian, you've been out there since this morning. how is the situation now? reporter well, audrey, i was in some of that traffic jam headed into half moon bay. they closed off westbound highway 92 because they wanted everybody that wanted to get out of half moon bay to actually get out. right now, things are back to normal. in fact, the surfers are out as soon as the tsunami warning was lifted, they came out because they thought they might catch some of the best waves at that time. and they did. they're doing that actually right now as well. the waves are crashing a little harder than they typically do here along the coastline in half moon bay, but things are back to normal. a lot of people are coming out and watching the waves as well to see what it's like and what could have been. it was a frightening moment for a lot of them. they heade

huge waves moving in along the coastline. think places like mavericks, you could maybe see some 40, maybe some 50 footers as we head in toward tomorrow morning along the general coast, yet 20, maybe some 20 plus, maybe 30 foot waves out there toward the beaches. so, yeah, not only worried about the high surf, worried about some flooding when the waves get that large. they can often across over some of the berms along the coastline. you see some coastal erosion. so you got to watch out for that out toward the beaches. here's the very latest on some of the wave heights that we're seeing across not only here, but much of the state southern california, seeing some extremely large waves in those locations. in fact, some of those waves, 23 even some 27 foot waves as you make your way into the bay area. not as high but high enough. and so you're traveling out toward the coastline and you just got to watch out for those waves that can knock it down and drag you right back out in the water and waves this large got to be careful out the

but >> gotta be careful out along the coastline. that's where you really gotta watch it. those big waves continuing to pound the media co so advisories continue for large swells out toward the beaches, maybe some 20, maybe some 30 foot breakers receipts from huge waves just off the coastline right now, not as large. we've got some pockets of some larger ways just to our north. we're seeing some of these wells running as much as 20 plus feet. you've got 26 footers there off the coastline there. not as big right around the bay area, but that could change just further out the middle of the city. you've got these large storms out there and they are generating some large swells. and you see that big bull's eye out there in the orange. you're seeing some of the waves there about 33 feet of big-time swells off our coastline. so those expected to move in throughout the weekend. so be careful. don't go out on the rocks. careful about fishing nets, the walking next. the beaches up in a way you can say enjoy. enjoy. really, though, the big thunderous ways we just stay away from the i

of course, we've been talking a lot about those waves along the coastline. ng in toward the beaches for the surfers have been just loving it average looking toward half moon bay in around that area. still large swells moving in along the coastline and really all along the coastal sections got to be very, very careful along the california coast. some huge well as expected throughout the weekend to we've got these large storms blowing off the coastline as they continue roll in. they are bringing with it some of those large. well, so just offer immediate coastline, some smaller swells, but of good waves, maybe 14 feet high in some place near half moon bay, looking at some of those waves coming in right there at 9 just off the coastline, much larger ways of 24 so that we could see as we head throughout the weekend. if you're along the coastline, watch out for some giant wave, just stay away from the beaches in the rocks and you'll be ok, but yeah, they're going to be thundering in across the coastline throughout the weekend. storm track lifting a little bit furth

and we've got some heavier amounts of moisture just off the coastline. that's going to be pushing on shore as we head throughout the evening hours of some of the rain rates likely be picking up. that's nearly half an inch per hour or so. things are going to get going as we head through the night tonightdo expect that and some gusty winds to pick up as forecast models picking up on that rain as we head through the evening. now, 10 o'clock or so. you see some bands moving on by as we head toward midnight or so shortly thereafter, some stronger bands, probably the main cold front coming through. and then after that looks like that towards more towards scattered showers by tomorrow morning. so the roadways are going to be slick, but not expecting heavy rainfall tomorrow morning for anybody traveling around the bay area may be an early morning commute. there's another storms on the way that was going to be a stronger storm over the weekend. we'll have more on that coming up in a few minutes. >> thanks, lauren. swell in the north bay. an investigation is underw

so likely bring some haze out toward the coastline. it will also bring some of that patchy, dense fog back into the valley. so thinking about that overnight tonight, watch out for some dense fog late night tonight into early tomorrow morning. that will play out again. you head to the delta, the carquinez strait. temperatures going to be in the 30's and the 40's for overnight lows. it will be chilly out there that cold fog forming inland. and it looks like that to fog could mean for some visibilities down to about a quarter of a mile in spots or less. so watch out for that in the coming days. here's that fog kind of settles in specially the sacramento valley. temperatures by day, though, looking very nice. how about 66 degrees in san jose? 64 degrees in hayward should be about 61 in napa and santa rosa and 61 also in san francisco. really some nice weatoer tomorrow in the next couple of days. ss we're looking at plenty of sunshine. just some fog in the morning is giving way to sunshine the afternoon. pleasant temperatures this weekend. i

show you why we've got a large swells still moving in off the coastline. e breakers, maybe 20, maybe 30 feet to average than love that the servers have been eaten it up out there. but in general, you got to be very, very careful out along the water's edge. extremely here's the very latest. you can see the conditions along the coastline, not gigantic swells and toward half moon bay. right now, those are running to about 9.10, feet. you make a way to san francisco to swells. also not as large, but not too far away. you're talking about some larger swells out there and 26 feet just off the coast of northern california. but look at that big dot right there in the middle of the pacific. that is a major swell. that is coming our way. in fact, those wave right now up to 33 feet. so that is going to be rolling in as we head throughout the weekend. storm clouds continuing to track a little further to the north today, although they're gonna start to sag south as we head throughout the night tonight. right now, most the rain in far northern california, not going to be

get dangerous out there to the winds have been realyy gusty, especially near the coastline. babers doesn't look too bad. the rain is getting things a little bit slick. there. >> it is just started there at this point. lot of rain out there on the golden gate bridge and some ponding out there on the roadways. as you head further north and that rain really picking up after what was a mostly dry day south of the golden gate bridge. we had a few scattered showers, but most that rain hung up in the north. and so the national weather service has issued that flood watch that continues until sunday up in the north bay. some of the mountains there over 2 and a half inches of rain in counting. they're likely to see another 2 and a maybe as much as 3 inches of rain in some parts of the north. they lead to the possibility. some flooding along some of the small creeks and streams their impact to go along with that. we've got an astronomical high tide and that high tide really going to back up the water. and that means we're going to see the water sure running down the hills and trying to

so along the coastline, we've got the high surf and don't want to swim in this. you don't want to surf on this. and it's also going to be affecting the coastline in terms of flooding. we could see some beach erosion. we could certainly see some flooding of us of nearby roads by the coastline. so some of those may be blocked. as a matter of fact, some of the coastal infrastructure may be in jeopardy as well. future rainfall totals over not just tonight, tomorrow, but all the way through the workweek into the weekend and even toward next week, it's going to be a lot as much as 10 inches in eureka, 6 to 10 inches in parts of the north bay. the hills especially will be very, very rainy and down in the bay area must much of the bay area will be seeing some significant amount of rains. and this is the big storm in the sierra winter storm warnings and watches warnings to the south and and watches to the south as well. but advisories definitely in effect through the sierra going to see awful lot of snow. 556500 foot snow level. so here comes the storm. and by wednesday w

damian trujillo now you've been along the san mateo coastline all day. i know that you're in half moon bay, but there are some questions tonight about the response to the tsunami warning and whether the county was really prepared for the real thing, if it actually had happened, and especially at the magnitude that jeff just explained to us. yeah. and the county clarified it for us later on this afternoon about the sirens that did not go off here in half moon bay right now things are calm. the waves are calm. in fact, it wasn't four hours after the cancellation of that tsunami warning that the surfers were back in the water enjoying the waves, but not before nearly half the town self-evacuated the line of cars headed out of half moon bay, stretched for miles along highway 92. people leaving the coastline after a tsunami warning was issued today. ruben galindo got the alert on his phone and immediately headed for higher ground. it just said, you know, tsunami warning. kind of freaked me out a bit, so i just grabbed the dogs, threw them in the car and drove

and the california coastline. and that's the san andreas fault. you really need that up and down motion. not side to side, but nonetheless, a tsunami warning was triggered by this very large earthquake. 7 point. oh, and boy, that came right along the mendocino fracture zone. and that is an area of typical of some very large earthquakes. 7 point, oh, of only 6 miles deep. that's very shallow. just a 10. 44 this morning that got the bay-area scrambling because remember, those numbers move very, very fast. the water moving over 500 miles per hour. that means we're looking at a possible tsunami along the coastline right around noon here in the bay area. certainly scary whether there are scary conditions there, but numerous aftershocks continuing hundreds of aftershocks and many more to come along that fault zone. >> all right, lawrence, thanks a lot. there is a renewed push tonight in san carlos to build a pedestrian bridge on a highway. 101 overpass. this is in response to a death last month of a bicylist. the city says the project didn't happen beca
