the university of colorado received a package from alleged theater gunman james holmes. the package containing handwritten papers was addressed to one of holmes' instructors in the neuroscience ph.d. program. meanwhile, the first of holmes alleged victims was buried. teresa garcia in aurora, colorado, has our report. >> investigators say a package from accused movie theater gunman was found in the mail room of the university of colorado denver. the package which was discovered monday was handled by a bomb squad robot and x-rayed to check for explosives. sources say the letter was sent to one of holmes' former professors, a psychiatrist. in it, he talked about shooting people and included crude drawings of a gunman and his victims. the letter may help investigators learn more about holmes but experts say not to expect closure. >> there is nothing that this individual could say to us that would cause us and the general public to sit back and say now i understand why you did this. >> defense attorneys got their first look inside holmes' apartment where authorities say he had

. >>> turning to the tragedy in colorado. nearly 48 hours after an unimaginable act of violence rocked the city of aurora, we're learning more about the suspected killer and the innocent moviegoers he's accused of killing. we've been gathering photos of the 12 victims that died. they are parents, husbands, wives and children. 27-year-old alex sullivan was celebrating his birthday with friends at the movies and the youngest victim, 6-year-old veronica sullivan was excited about starting swimming classes. dozens of people survived the massacre. some of them bay area residents including two teenage girls who were watching the premiere with their friends when one of them was hit. kimberly terry is here with more on their terrifying experience. >> reporter: they say this trip to see the movie on opening night had been planned for weeks. they were seated next to the wall that separates their theater from the one where the shooter opened fire. it was about 20 minutes into the movie when the group of teens knew something wasn't right.

david mattingly joins use outside of the courthouse in colorado. what are we expecting to hear and are you hearing anything about james holmes and what he's been doing this past weekend? >> reporter: well, deb, expect tomorrow to see the prosecution in this case to take center stage in this terrible tragedy. we'll be hearing from them tomorrow about what kind of charges they intend to seek against this alleged killer. we had 12 people killed in the theater. we're looking at the potential of 12 murder charges there, premeditated first-degree murder charges. we have 58 people wounded. there are any number of dozens, potentially dozens of attempted murder charges that could come about as well. we're also expecting to hear more about that mysterious package that the alleged killer sent to his psychiatrist at the university of colorado. authorities have that package in their possession but the defense has said that represents protected patient-doctor privilege with those communications. we're going to wait to see how the judge weighs in on this if the co

he's a 24-year-old doctoral student at the university of colorado. he had allegedly bought as many as 6,000 rounds with the ability to shoot up to 50 a minute. yes, 50 a minute. so we've got our law enforcement from hln expert analyst with us, mike brooks. mike, when can we expect the charges to be laid out and what happens next in terms of this investigation? >> well, the focus today is going to be on that apartment and what's inside there. you know, specialized bomb techs from the fbi, the local law enforcement bomb techs will make entry, to go in there, to render safe that situation. and then there may be other charges coming from inside that apartment. there's also other potential evidence that could be inside that apartment, randi, that we're going to be taking a look at. and what charges? well, you know, we know that there are going to be local charges. possibly first-degree murder, if they can say for sure, you know, this was totally premeditated, which to me as a former investigators looks like it was. you could have those charges, but you co

president obama met with the injured at the colorado hospital. the suspect's surrender it's reported wasn't as cut and dry as previously thought. aurora police say james holmes could have been mistaken for an arriving s.w.a.t. officer because of his full body armor. >>> three days have now passed since the shootings. 24 people remain hospitalized and nine are in critical condition. fox's craig boswell joins us live from aurora, colorado. you're outside the apartment building where the accused gunman james holmes lived. are investigators still there tonight? >> reporter: good evening. evidence response technicians have wrapped up their work inside the apartment. it's the third for that apartment where all the windows are broken out. they wrapped up around 2:00 this morning, saw them bringing out a computer and hardware and computer tower. we've also learned that some of the evidence they took was a batman poster and mask, not sure which character, but some of the other things we're learning about that were brought out from the apartment as well as
