police believe them to be here in the state of colorado. m clements confirmed dead, the executive director of the colorado department of corrections. let me give you a look at the scene here. police have the area roped off. the clements' home is right around that bend we're showing you. what happened just after 8:30 mountain standard time last night, there was a knock at the door of the home. mr. clements opened that door and was shot in the chest. his family called 911, he was rushed to the hospital and pronounced dead. the governor reaching out to employees this morning issuing a statement saying that he's never worked with a better person, that he is saddened. as you mentioned, flags at half staff and plenty of reaction coming in from state government this morning. now, police are saying there's no immediate danger in this area which would indicate that the gunman is fleeing to the state line, to the south of colorado springs or in a different direction but we are following this investigation right now. no suspects in custody. clements le

same man wanted in the killing of colorado's policen chief. at was similar to one seen leaving the colorado home where tom clemens was shot dead, as he answered his door. cnn correspondent ed lavandera joins us live now from decatur, texas. what's the latest on this, ed? >> well, hundreds of miles away from where the director of the colorado prison system was gunned down and killed at his front door, the focus is now on texas. and specifically, the driver of a black cadillac that ended -- that was killed after a wild high-speed chase yesterday afternoon. this is how a high speed chase across north texas ended. a black cadillac with two different colorado license plates smashed by an 18-wheeler. but the crash didn't stop the driver from getting out of the car and firing away at law enforcement officers. he was shot and killed in the firefight. >> he wasn't planning on being taken alive. i mean, that's obvious that he was trying to hurt somebody and he was trying to hurt the police. >> reporter: the chase started when a sheriff's deputy tried to

in the intervening years, colorado also saw, of course, the mass shooting in littleton, colorado, at columbine high school which left 15 people dead, including the two gunmen. now there's no reason to think that colorado is a magnet for this kind of violence, that it is any more prone to gun massacres or gun violence in general than any other state in the country. but for whatever reason, colorado just in this past generation has had a couple of the most high-profile massacres in the country. and after columbine and after aurora, there was not just national attention to those outrages, but there was a wave of national outrage. national attention. national outrage. national outpouring of grief. and ultimately, no change in public policy. colorado has, meanwhile, become this very illuminating lens through which to view what is going on in our country now on this subject because colorado will always be the home of columbine. and colorado will always be the home of aurora. but columbine and aurora were not enough to change anything in colorado when it comes to policy. nothing happened. an

the car was boxy in shape. colorado governor gave an emotional press conference this morning. the governor said tom clements was on the verge of retirement. he had worked in corrections in the state of missouri for three decades before coming to colorado. he had been about to retire, but he, the governor was able to lure him to come to colorado to take the job running the state's prisons, because the governor knew he was the right man for the job. the governor then took questions from the press. and right away, the reporters on scene raised the question whether there might be any connection between this murder last night and the gun debate that's going on in colorado. with this major high profile event that was scheduled for this morning, the governor signing three new pieces of legislation. the governor responded that tom clements had been supportive of the bills, but not in a particularly active way. until there is a suspect or explanation of what happened nobody has any idea what motivated this murder. law enforcement said they're not jumping to conclusions whether his job o

well, the hunt for a killer in colorado sparking concern well beyond that state's borders. ims that a powerful saudi family may possibly have been involved in this assassination of a high ranking state official. tom clements was the executive director of the colorado department of corrections. and seven day before he was gunned down at his home, keep in mind he has a wife and two children, he refused to allow this man, a saudi national to serve out the remainder of the colorado prison sentence in saudi arabia. he was convicted in 2006, this man was for sexually assaulting his housekeeper and they said holder her a virtual prisoner. his conviction angered the saudies, so much so that our state department even sent the colorado attorney general at the time to meet with the king of saudi arabia and with this man's family, al-turki is his last name. and joining me now is kirk mitchell, a reporter at denver post and joins us by phone to give us an update on this. thanks so much for being here. >> thank you. >> megyn: what do we know about this saudi connection? >> in terms of the
