is meaningfully different than the power to compel individuals to enter into commerce, to regulate inactivity, to punish inactivi inactivity, to punish the failure to buy a particular product; that th, that the peopt not want to buy. you see, for a long time, we had this understanding as americans that the power given to congress was in fact limited. you look at all the authorities granted to congress under the constitution. the overwhelming majority of which can be found in article 1, section 8. all of these are limited, and they were limited with good reason. they were limited with good reason because that really was -- played a very large part, it played a very significant role in how and why we became a country. we broke away from great britain, not just because we grew tired of having a monarch but because we grew tired of the authority of parliament, a parliament which not only refused to grant us any representation but also a parliament that refused to acknowledge any natural limit on its power to regulate us, and it did in fact regulate us and it regulated us h

all the objectives at the department of commerce. i think that's not been the way it has been done before. so i think that is the thing that is unusual. >> how is it different? what had been done in the past? >> i think it tended to be very top-down as opposed to the goals and objectives being bottom-up. frankly what we need to do is, and there's a lot of focus what we can get done in the period we have left as an administration and from my standpoint there's a lot that we can get done. you know, take the advanced manufacturing agenda. there is a bipartisan, bicameral bill on the hill to support something called the national network of manufacturing innovation. this is a great idea. this is where federal dollars are matched by local dollars but the local dollars are a strategy, created regionally, around innovative manufacturing. that is what it called pre-competitive innovation. before semiconductor companies or 3-d printing companies compete with one another they need to come together to get with the academic community, the local ac

you are talking about the commerce department. estimated the growth online. thatvestors have long held retail sales on e-commerce are much higher than the government might be thinking. the government statistics might be lagging on what is going on in the marketplace. the data point we got this christmas season confirms that. whole retail ecosystem from the retailers to the theributors to the ups's of world got caught flat-footed. the bestn have processing system of amazon or ebay, but you are still dependent on these brick-and- mortar companies, which are ups and fedex and others and others in the government system. it could all break down. what has to happen to make sure the whole process is smooth? last couplever the of years, has been spending billions of dollars sacrificing near-term profits to invest in their fulfillment centers and their distribution centers to ensure they can deliver on time and maybe even same-day. at the end of the day, they are dependent upon the last link, the old-fashioned ups and fedex. the shipping companies have to step back and

most of the retail stores are doing e-commerce and have sophisticated sites and now the e-commerce peopleiguring out to compete, they probably will need in a lot of cases a brick and mortar store because a lot of the population want to touch and feel and experience the product. there's no question that the package of having both a great website and a great store is going to be, i believe, who is going to be the leading retailers and competitors out there. >> it seems, chris, that warby parker did it right. they tested it online without putting the big capital investment in the store. >> they did. the broader trend is online and off line are smashing together. the differences are blurring more and more. to jay's point, i think every off line retailer has to have an online presence, even if just for marketing and outreach. not every online retailer should go off line. but some can. i think warby parker is a perfect example of one that had built a brand out of nothing. i think that's part of -- you have to stop and pause and look at warby parker. they've sold 500,000 pairs of glasses and giv

loretta sanchez tended to vote with the chamber of commerce more often. this is just one case. this is just an anecdote. just to members of congress, that the differences you see between the two of them are sort of representative of the larger difference is that i see when i look across hundreds of members of congress, when i look at sort of data from lots of different time period. politicians come these other things matter, race, gender, constituency, party, all these things are extremely important when a politician tries to decide how to vote on a bill or -- so all these things better, but there is an important difference over and above those things between a politician who has real experience and working-class jobs and a politician who doesn't. on your other question, what is class? this is something that scholars, medical sciences, sociologists have been debating for decades and will probably going to bring for a long time. in the book i sort as i come down on the side of things. the right way to think about a person place in our society are place in our economy is to ask th
