the denominators are growing. gdp is growing faster than defense. and the overall federal budget is growing faster than defense. that is why they keep going down as a percentage. if you look at the fence and inflation in adjusted dollars you see a different picture. i've shunted two ways. what you see reported by dod, the blue line you see here, they adjust for inflation using their own deflator's. i don't like their deflator's because what they end up doing is the count a lot of the growth and labor costs as inflation. they counted as price growth it's actually cost growth. if you do the omb, cbo, rest of the federal government they'll use the price index to adjust for inflation, it's a neutral measure of inflation in the overall economy. it is what it dollars worth. if you use that measure of inflation you see the red line, a similar trend but the farther back you go in history, the greater the difference you see. between the two measures of inflation. i get questions from you periodically, different ones of you, about why my inflation adjusted numbers way back in time don't match up to what's in the green boo
