when i wrote, "the greatest generation," i talked a lot to my friend bob dole and to danny. found this remarkable moment in their lives. you know where bob came from. he came from a small town in kansas, difficult circumstances. by the way, if you go to the university of kansas, the dole institute is a wonderful institution. they have got speakers coming in, and they are studying the great issues of our day. you also see on the wall bob adonis, a great athlete. he was this beautiful physique. of course, as we know, he was grievously wounded, a wounded that could have killed most people. but he fought his way back with the help of the townspeople. hospital inn a v.a. michigan. one of his roommates is a japanese-american from hawaii. his family had been there since the beginning of the 20th century, and when pearl harbor this man went down to pearl harbor and treated americans with his boy scout training. of course, there was this wave of hostility toward japanese-americans. they began to hear about it in hawaii. he decided to join the army, 442nd. nouye was told by his father

" we use all of the donations for programs that we do right here in siouxland. our after school program is funded through ringing bells. our homeless and transitional housing programs are used through the fund here. so it's a big fundraiser and it helps a lot of people here in siouxland." jessica rae: members of the downtown sioux also gathered to in need through the salvation army. are set up around those in need. jessica rae: hundreds of siouxlanders turned out for a local holiday tradition of giving back.

the presidency in 1976. i decided to be away from government for. . bush and dole and anderson and connolly all ran. it looked like he would be wide open in 1988. after spending a lot of time traveling around the country, i have concluded that is wide open. a generational changes taking place in both parties. the people who dominated the scene will be off the same. is very difficult for vice president to run for president. we have not elected a vice president as president in 150 years. front runners don't do that well. it is more of a marathon that a sprint. most candidates seem to defeat themselves. i know the other candidates and they are good men. they have strengths and weaknesses as i do. the test will be what the american people feel about our country's circumstances in the world. how the various candidates backgrounds and aspirations mesh with those needs. my sense is, is important to know how the economy works. you need to know how the executive branch of the federal government works. there is difference between executive and legislative leadership. the legislature takes the inbox and average
