in the middle east. thank you also to the folks from c-span who are watching and the folks that are streaming this live over the atlantic council's website. my name is william wechsler. i read the atlantic council's work in the middle east. i'm the director for the center that is your host this afternoon. this question was a question that would not really have been asked only a decade ago. china does not have deep historical ties in the region. china has its economic connections were modest not that long ago. but now it's a question that many people in the region are asking more and more. many people in the u.s. economic, diplomatic, intelligence and military apparatus are asking more and more. many people in china are asking more and more about how they approach this region as part of their wider belt and road initiative, as part of their wider diplomatic initiatives, as part of their need for energy resources. what we see right now is the economic relationship between china and the middle east is deep a

china relationship in the middle east be defined? i think it is fair to say that in many other parts of the world like northeast asia and southeast asia, it is a good prediction that the united states and china will be in the era of great power competition and hopefully not confrontation. that will basically define the relationship. the story has not been written yet on the middle east. there are a number of places where the interests align and a number of places where they do not. which will be the dominant story, we do not know yet. to help answer these questions and look ahead we have a very important and useful set of commentaries we are going to here. it will be led by our keynote speaker who was deputy assistant to the president and senior director for the middle east. she was in the past a national security advisor to senator ted cruz and advised the texas governor as well. she has a phd and a masters degree from williams college and an undergraduate degree from trinity college. she will be starting off our discussion today wit

image of the middle east. i would most definitely say we don't see these as client states that we are just working with transactionally. it is a challenge because the region is so volatile and there are so many different centers of power, so to speak. but our image is really to try to build our security architecture with those countries that we can work with, that overtime they work successfully together to sure up their own defenses and see that cooperation with each other is better than fighting each other. i will say from a d.o.d. perspective, we just come out with the tools that we have. you know, a point that we like to make and i actually think it's true is that if you can build a certain amount of respect for security services and ministries of defense that are run appropriately and are non-corrupt and employ the right people with the right qualifications, the militaries can be exemplars for the rest of society in terms of the way government is supposed to work. it's a challenge. it's hard, but that is o

thursday was a warm and a sunny day for most of us away from the east coast. far. and today's looking pretty similar — another dry and sunny one with the highest temperatures across the west. that's because we've got high pressure across the country drawing up this hot air from france across western areas. but for the east, you'll notice the yellow colourss there, that's because we've still got more of an onshore breeze, but not as windy as it was on thursday either. we've got a bit of a grey start across the east of the country, that cloud will burn back to the coast and most places will be dry and sunny. and the sun will have strength to it. very high uv levels across most of the country, but especially across england and wales. and temperatures — east—west divide. it's going to be hot across western scotland. we could see one or two places reaching 30 degrees across the west, but 15 degrees or so across north sea coasts. the same too for wales, western england, a little bit fresher, though, further east with a bit more of an onshore breeze there. not as win

it is the largest on the east coast. roduces about 330,000 barrels per day, which is more than 150 million gallons per month of refined gasoline jet fuel and other products. despite repeated requests, the refinery to give us update on exactly the status and current output, we have not gotten that. at its full capacity, the refinery, which by the way is actually two large refineries sort of connected in one, is a 27% of the mid-atlantic's gasoline output. we don't exactly know how much refinery -- the refinery is still operating but just how much we do not know. each refinery is about 13.5%, 27% of the region's gasoline output in total. obviously we'll be trying to figure out the real impact not only on the price of gasoline but on all the impact of the infrastructure here on the east coast. the other angle here, guys, is also what happens with the ownership structure. this is a refinery that is owned unlike any other in the united states it is not owned by an oil and gas company. it is owned by four different companies, t
