one of the issues has to do with the embarcadero. there is a broad feeling that we have done a good job, but that the west side is an important potential way for the public to appreciate the they, and that it does not match the standard of hurricane way and this side of the street. i think it is something that we all know and have seen in our own planning processes. with regard to historic rehabilitation and public benefits, i touched on this a little bit before. i think people appreciated the fact that the special area plan prompted the port to nominate the embarcadero historic district to the register of historic places. that was one of the requirements of the special area plan. they do not always view the

this has to do with an already constricted area along the waterfront, including along the embarcadero. while we incurred purging bikes and pedestrians, that we can do so in a safe manner. we are looking at a number of different locations for restricting automobile access, including potentially enclosures on the northbound embarcadero. also, in the northern waterfront areas from keeping too many cars to where they cannot get out of in a quest for an ever-elusive parking spot. that is an engagement challenge, making sure that we set up those restrictions in a way that makes sense for all those who need to use those areas but also enhances the events themselves. with that, this is the last slide, identifying some of our locations online. we continue to take public comment through may. but as i mentioned, it will be and interest process. we will try to get as much, and as we can. with that, happy to answer any questions. >> thank you. is there any public comment on this item? >> thank you for a thorough briefing. in terms, from the city's perspective -- i have a couple observations. and i

capacity along the ferry building, but also serve as a connector down to the southern piece of the embarcadero, down to the caltrain terminal. moving forward from there, we are really looking at bicycles as a key strategy. obviously, a lot of potential conflicts with pedestrians and cars along this route, but it also offers us opportunities in that it is a fairly flat. in an otherwise hilly city. we are looking at different ways to allow people to have safe and secure areas to leave their bikes, if they have their own, but also look at ways to bring bicycle rental companies for the city's bike share pilot program. if people did not want to wait in line for a train, they could spend the day running their bicycle along the beautiful waterfront. frankly, when i visited the first time when i was 22, i rented a bike and rode across the golden gate bridge. this is something i am excited about and hope that we can deliver on as a valuable piece to our transportation strategy. satellite parking is another strategy we are looking at on a lot of different fronts. our goal is to generally discourage car

to create the embarcadero, they had all of this exposed rock. they decided to mine telegraph hill for the rock and build a levee and bill in behind the levee. they blasted the rock. it was illegal but they did it anyway. they took the rock and built a rock dike all along here. beneath the fill the latem are of this mud with the consistency of jello. that layer may be as thick as 110 feet. >> is bad dyke founded on the mud -- is the dike founded on the mud? >> it is. when they dumped the rock into the bay mud, it was like dumping rock into jello. it went down into the mud so that they could build off of that. it then took the angle of repose. it is stable. san francisco came and built piers on piles over the top into the water. >> the piers are built up over the water. >> refusal is when you cannot advance the pile anymore. this is under the bay mud over there. they meet refusal. they gain support and bearing on top. saltwater attacks concrete. in the old days, they did not understand the effects of salt water, chloride on concrete and steel. a lo

we got an update saying the single tracking trains from west portal to the embarcadero. still noninbound service from the. n judah and j line right now. this bus not in service right now but aboveground muni buses still working this morning. now what happened. i want you to take a look at this. this is work yesterday after a train with a damaged piece of equipment a pentograph entered the wire. it connects the vehicle to muni's overhead wires. under ground service went down around 11:30 yesterday morning. shutting down five lines. lines k, l, m, and j which all caused a lot of confusion. passengers took a muni metro train to a church station. and could transfer to a j or n vehicle. they immediately made shuttle buses available for riders. inspectors tried to do what they could and help direct passengers. >> got here at church and dubois. went inside and pulled down 500 feet of wire. knocked down some of the power source and pulled the support down. >> reporter: the n and j lines have been diverted. they are single tracking trains from west portal to the embarcadero dare r

as you move north, you come to the southern pacific building or the embarcadero centers or the trans america towers. there, the rock is 40, 60 feet deep. but the decision was made that we need parking. so they elected to dig down to the dents supporting soil and build a foundation on the dance material below the bay mud. so that is a rock site, rock expedite -- rock excavation. this is part of the temporary shoring system that retains the walls of the excavation and prevents the building, other buildings from falling into the hole. >> where were we? >> we were driving around in the marina. we were looking over the perfectly flat marina green, at the whole marine area, which is also perfectly flat because it was artificial filled from the 1915 exposition. >> that is correct. it was hydraulics and pumped in from the bay. same principle, they built a dike on the outside it, and then pumped in the sand. and as we all know, in 1989, a lot of damage. lawrence can speak to the concept of soft story problems with the buildings, and the look of viable soil. in perfect concert with each other,

a longstanding project of the embarcadero was one of them. the installation of the language of the birds in one of the most traffic tourism sight of this city, the intersection of broadway and columbus. it has been a phenomenally successful works that bridges the cultures of north beach was chinatown. leland avenue generated a fabulous project called street life. the valencia streetscape improvements has generated a work of art. one of the largest and most impressive outdoor improvements was to the plaza where we used an artist to use colored pavement to impact the plaza. if anyone has a chance to see that, it's quite a phenomenal change to the streetscape. but -- upcoming projects include the surrounding area of general hospital, soma west and the public safety building. going to the question you started out with, how will we try to change and improve the street smart program, we are going to be talking with the department of public works, which is our partner in this effort. we're going to change our memorandum of understanding so we will in

possibly on the west side of the embarcadero. we are also looking at additional removal options. possibly phased removal of the non-historic connector shed. it is called pier 19 and 1/2 and it would provide great views of the bay. that is the port staff initial proposal on the public benefits in vision that the site. we have a ways to go with stakeholders to get to the right formula. i would like to move on to the america's cup special area planned proposal. the area on the screen is the area between pier 14 and 22 and a half. it is the open water basin in the area planned. but the new agreement requires that the port provide this space for the purposes of large spectator vessels during the races. in to permit dredging in this area. it would need to be to a debt of about 12 feet. promising that long-term in that location from the event authority. the proposal for this special area plan would be related only to the special use of this location for the race. it would permit these large spectator wrote vessels in the park with docs installed on a temporary basis, moved after the race
