it collided with the embarcadero overpass and caused a 27-foot-wide crack. actually took out a chunk of the overpass. the force of the crash knocked the truck bed off of the hydraulics and the truck became lodged into the overpass. two lanes of northbound 101 are still closed. >> traveling southbound in the number 1 lane with the dump truck elevated. as he approached the embarcadero overcrossing, the dump truck collided with the -- with the overcrossing. >> and the impact of that collision also caused the driver's head to hit the steering wheel. he had to be taken to the hospital for treatment. caltrans is now sending an spin tech tore to the scene to check the integrity of the overpass itself. >> southbound 101 is backed up into redwood sitting heading down to the embarcadero or the embarcadero exit or the overcrossing where this is. the best bet is to use 280 instead. it is a little slow but i would recommend it. driving northbound on 101, this is not affecting you too much. people are slowing at the scene. but the big backup is southbound 101. in just a c

the latest is that black tarp that was installed by caltrans over the embarcadero road overcrossing. ght now, one southbound lane remains blocked. all the lanes were supposed to be open by 3 p.m. today to ease the evening commute. but that didn't happen. now, over the last couple of hours, caltrans cleared away all the loose debris from the cracked section and then installed that plastic tarp just to be sure that if anything may become loose it doesn't fall on the cars below. caltrans engineer has been inspecting the bridge but it took hours for that engineer to arrive from sacramento adding to the delays. for 101 drivers, it's been a day of long traffic jams. >> earlier today we had to shut down two lanes. as it progressed, when we got an engineer out here, we were able to open up one more lane. and as of right now, it's looking like we'll have one lane closed until we get further notification from caltrans. >> reporter: all this got started about 11:00 last night. that's when a dump truck from a nearby construction site drove down the freeway with a dumping bed still in the upright

we just got word seconds ago that they have reopened the on ramp at embarcadero. that's at 101 in palo alto. back to you. >> mike, thank you. >>> flames erupt at a duplex overnight in san jose. the fire broke out on south 11th street just after midnight causing quite a panic for sleeping neighbors. >> kris sanchez is live at the scene. kris, the fire was so hot that nearby homes had to be evacuated? >> reporter: yes. and most people were probably asleep because it was after midnight. crews are boarding up the windows here so folks can have some privacy in their homes. this is the home right now and you can see the black smoke and the plywood going up as well. the neighbors in the home evacuated as a precaution. they watched for 30 minutes as firefighters tried to get the fire knocked down. when it was over, three people here could not go home. both units of the duplex were burned and damaged. firefighters were on the scene after making sure there were no hot spots that would flare-up. to give you an idea of where this is, this is happy hollow to the southeast. the
