i'm the coordinator manager of the excelsior group and work to revitalize mission street and the excelsior neighborhood between silver and geneva avenue and project partner with the community's first parklet and installed in 2012 and the image was on the cool slide of paul's slide show. for those less familiar with the excelsior community it's low and moderate income and diverse and residents forn born and many are first generation imgrintds and we have a large proportion of kids, seniors and youth and our community isn't the type of community that you think of when you think of parklets in san francisco. nonetheless the parklet we have is well received by the community members and they have made it their own. one of the primary uses is a community gathering space. we had pot lots and drum circles and other musical performances and art activities at the space and 1/3 of the parklet is dedicated to a community garden. so i would say that i think parklets are the type of public space intervention that really evolved to suit the community in which they're located and i support the parklets. >

i am the point person for the excelsior and middle polk. jorge, who you just heard from in the last presentation is the point person for west portal and commercial districts in the sunset district. you might know chrissy, who is the point person for bayview and portola and it goes on, so each neighborhood has an advocate in city hall and it's really important, that advocate is staying on top of what is happening in the neighborhood and working with the agencies to get the district the support it needs. the job squad, for the first time, we have -- we have two guys who are pounding the pavement, conducting proactive outreach to small businesses around the city. sometimes we acknowledge that not everybody is going to walk down to city hall and come to the small business assistance center and talk to chris and regina and jane. there are a whole lot of business openers owners who are just going to stay many their business and maybe the only interaction they have with city hall is getting their tax bill and we want to change that so we're sending

we've seen a great increase from the excelsior as well for the great infrastructure we're putting in place. so, we know these efforts work towards increasing rider ship. this new legislation will bring the numbers of required bike parking and new buildings up to a level more consistent with san francisco's growing bike rider ship. the legislation provides more clarity on types of building uses than previous legislation and more guidance on designs and types of bike parking. these changes will help allow developers to more effectively plan for quality of bike parking and provide the necessary facilities for their future tenants. and i believe we have member from the planning department who is here to -- ms. ann marie rogers to give a summary on the changes to both the general plan amendment and the legislation before us today. and i could summarize them or perhaps ms. rogers, you could summarize them yourself or -- >> yes, i could. i'm here today with [speaker not understood] and josh witsky. we have a 7 minute presentation. we can give a good summary as well. >> that sounds great. pl

i have been in san francisco since 1989, have lived in the excelsior since 1999. the difficulty is, muni often sees it as an industrial area, not a neighborhood. we have to figure out how to make it work as a neighborhood and as a place that can service the light rail vehicles. i have had lots of different jobs. my main job has been doing social work for san francisco state university. i have been a community organizer, a social worker, but i have also been a legislative aide. i worked mostly for community- based organization supporting kids and families, working for labor. i got to see how city hall could be an effective tool to create change. i looked at running in 2007, 2008, and somehow i made it. i have been in politics for so many ways, doing work around central america, supporting people in central america against u.s. imperialism, their right to live, self determination. i did a lot of work on that on campus when i was in college. a bit of work on apartheid when i was in college as well. >> i never got involved in supporting a candidate. i never thought a c

we had a few homicides in the excelsior district, one that is very well known, the bologna homicides. tragedies are horrible if nothing else but to help communities organize. nay street neighbors really did that. they looked out for one another. they reached out. they created relationships where perhaps they didn't exist before. they looked at their neighborhood and thought, how can we make this neighborhood safer? and they've done amazing things. they've done greening, they planted last month scores of trees in the neighborhood. they brought the community together around garage sales. they actually are holding a market that has not been really a good neighbor in the area accountable to the neighborhood, which is an amazing feat. all of this is done because they love their neighborhood. they are inspired by community. that's what brings them together. so, i want to call up linda and -- linda cook and patricia de font.
