here's the photo of expressway happening from ground level with the expressway. in on the token of this it went from there to steiner. you can see from the engineer drawing you don't see the pedestrians or other activities it's meant to be an efficient auto thoroughfare with a lot of attention to the community on either side. on this photo you can see the redevelopment area with the now a japan center buildings on the north side of gary. so the expressway had the intended fact of dividing community with japan town open the north side and the lower income and largely african-american communities focused on the south side of gary. the expressway represents not just a psychological barrier for folks it was unpleasantness and pedestrians had to cross two parking lanes. indeed like buchanan you could cross the street in between before the expressway it was eliminated. on the other does the pedestrian crows were prohibited. the crossing prohibition sign on the corner there. and those crossing had to be prohib prohibited because their unsafe. and so as a nod to pedestri

also in san jose, a small plane made an emergency landing this morning on the capital expressway. the pilot brought down the plane, dodging power lines and cars after some sort of malfunction shortly after takeoff from the reid hill view airport. no one was injured, but it made a mess of the morning commute. >> at least ten people are looking for new homes tonight after a fire destroyed part of an apartment complex in sunny vail. the fire consumed the two story building on west california avenue at around 3:00 p.m. the red cross is working on finding them temporary housing. we still don't know how it started. in stockton, a fire that started at a recycling plant quickly got out of hand as flames crept very close to interstate 5. smoke could be seen for miles. at one point, it got so bad, both directions of i-5, they were temporarily closed. strong winds continue to blow hot embers creating multiple spots and fires in the area. crews say they will remain on scene throughout the night using dozers and spraying water until the flames are out. >>> it wasn't easy, i had to do what i nee

as we talk about other incidents we have a report along 87 at the expressway, a motorcycle crash. take you quickly outside to our emeryville camera you can see the traffic is barely moving and that is because of an early crash at fremont that has been moved off and we have 40 minute commute from the maze to san francisco. mike? >> we will talk about the fire and the weather conditions. we start with live doppler 7 hd showing you the dry air and calm conditions. as we zoom down the firefighters are dealing with a temperature of 55 degrees but it is the winds that are the key. the winds are blowing out to the northeast right along 84 and that is why you are seeing the heaviest smoke drift over to 101 so if you live northeast of this particular area you are going to be dealing with the smoke and we have an inverse, warmer here sit ting on top of cool air, which is stable and that will not allow the smoke to mix in the atmosphere. because of that we will see a lot smoke out there. weather-wise it will be in the 70's and 80's once again. >> mike, thank you for that explanation. katie is
