begin by thanking the community of the city college of san francisco, beginning with the students, the faculty, and all of the san franciscans who benefit from this amazing institution. for almost 80 years the college has been an institution that in many respects represents, embodies what san francisco is about. for the past 78 years, city college of san francisco has been crucial to the economic and social development of san francisco and has been widely acknowledged not only to be a san francisco institution, but to be one of the best community colleges not just in the state, but in the country. city college, in my view -- and i say this as someone who is an immigrant who came to this country in search of the american dream -- city college is making it possible for the american dream to remain alive for thousands and thousands of san franciscans. and it is for that reason that we are here today. today's special meeting of the neighborhood services and safety committee is devoted to the very important issue of bringing our community voice back to city college. we will vote on a resolution tha

[cheering and applauding] >>> there is little that i can add to this. folks know that i usually have something to say. but i think so much has been said today. it is so important. what i will say is that this resolution, as important as it is, is one step in getting back city college of san francisco and we have many more steps to take. what is very, very important is that the administration -- is that chancellor brice harris up in sacramento, is that everyone understand that the steps to saving city college of san francisco are not about shutting out you or the people in this room or the elected board of trustees. they can't have a city college of san francisco without all of us in the picture, without all of us contributing. first, again, i want to thank the incredible community of city college, its students, the faculty, aft 21 21, all of the community members who have rallied behind this cause. i do think that with challenge comes opportunity and this has been an opportunity to remind people what we as san franciscans are about. we in san francisco are very lucky to live in this very special place that has many wonderful things going. but there are challenges that we're facing and perhaps the biggest challenge facing not only our city, but the country is the fact that there is a growing inequality. san francisco right now is facing an affordability crisis and we actually have the second highest inequality of any major city in the united states. and, in fact, the inequality in san francisco is growing at a fastest rate than any other city in the country. for my own personal experience, i can tell you that education is the great equalizer and we cannot close that inequality, we cannot close that disparity without city college remaining what it has been to san francisco. association and the president of the california faculty association at san francisco state, and a tremendous leader that works behind the scenes in many ways to really empower women, students, and others in educational struggles throughout the state and in our city. she grew up in the boston area. you might hear that in her slight accent and she's here today with her husband rick claymore and friends from the outer richmond, karen mcnulty and others. she moved to the bear after college about the same time i did in the early '80s. ~ she's lived in the richmond for 30 years, and she's been a mom of a great daughter gabriella as well. [speaker not understood]. i draw strength and lessons from her by often watching her work. we first met in the '90s when we struggled to transform a college called new collectv to be more representative of the work force and lectures and teachers he and students as well and community ~. but i've seen how in the classroom at san francisco state in her classes where she is an expert in health equity, medical anthropology, human sexuality, and new soc

the downward surprisingly of funding we can't afford that to continue the work done by the faculty and staff to sustain yourselves. if we have to cut 167 and participates in other year that's 32 percent of the programs that wouldn't support of service the communities of san francisco. we're in a wonderful boom in terms of economics and the city college needs to be there to support of the skill sets that are required to be sustained by the people of san francisco. that's really the hallmark of why this bill t is important >> (inaudible) we would lose so far there - and a that's correct this year we're in a current year of stabilization and as we finish all the monumental work that's been done it will take at least another year and more importantly it will take time for the students to have the confidence to come back to school. you know what we've noticed it that our students haven't gone anywhere they're waiting to see what's happening to us. that's an important thing to note and the stabilization funding will help to give the confidence back to the students. thank you >> (inaudible).

there was very little new faculty hiring, and then you came in and transform the law school in a very short timeframe. there was curricular reform, a tremendous wave of faculty hiring. is there anything specific that people can think about listening, trying to get people to see across differences? >> listening, trying to get people to see across differences, picking out people who will help you, because you cannot do it on your own. you need people who are going to join into this endeavor with you and help you achieve it. i was lucky enough to have a bunch of great people doing that. and just trying to figure out -- you know, some people -- you know, just trying to figure out what makes an institution work, the personal dynamics within an institution, and using that knowledge to figure out how you can move and change and shift the place. >> it is a little bit different, but one of the things that you did that i find very striking is the concern that the senate had about the fact that you had no knowledge of hunting and guns. >> [laughter] >> and the way that you responded to that i th
