it's great to see the blue angels and great to see fleet week. one of the things you should see are the ships i'm standing on the use corona-- on the u.s.s. coronodo. this ship is interesting. it's not what most people who think of. it's for a different type of purpose. give us a sense of what we're looking at. >> it's designed -- all aluminum. it high speed, jet drive propulsion. very quick. designed to operate close to shore. >> reporter: that's the interesting thing it may go across the ocean but the reality and situation, it operates close to shore. how close and why. >> typically operates within 20, 25 nautical miles to shore. the way we're designed is to do certain missions that typically off rate toward the environment. >> rate -- off rate toward that environment. >> reporter: one of the missions -- >> we do do a surface warfare mission as well as a multitude of other things. >> this is a fast ship. >> high speed, great maneuver ability. we can operate at 40-plus knots. >> reporter: this is so new we're learning about the operation. the oth

the highlight of fleet week is of course the air show that gets under way 20 minutes from now and the blue angels set to do their performance at three this afternoon. the military and several first responders set-up what is called a humanitarian assistance center along the marina green. like a mini city that shows first responder capabilities at the time of a disaster. that is open along the marina. as we take it back out here live, you couldn't ask for better weather. it is an amazing time to be out here along the marina to watch the air show which gets started in 20 minutes from now. people have lined up here, still, as you can see, plenty of space to see the air show which kicks off at 12:30 this afternoon. blue angels around 3:00. gasia, back to you. >> thank you so much. >>> just so you know, we're waiting to hear from san francisco police as we expect them to give us the updates of the killing of a hiker in marin county and a hiker in the goelten gate park. -- golden gate park. we spoke with tara moriarty. she expects to hear from the investigators, how they linked the two and s

robert farmer is the son of a former sfpd officer, jack farmer. >> it's fleet weekend. the blue angels. you might be heading to san francisco this week. many others may be heading here. a live look at santa cruz. the weather is nice if you're headed to the coast, be careful. there's a warning going into effect about strong waves. jeff ranieri has the timeline for us. >> we're finding waves beginning to increase. it's not extremely dangerous at the current moment with wind-whipped waves up to four-feet. what we're tracking is energy left over from hurricane oho. while the storm system has lifted well off to the north and dissipated, it really stirred up the pacific, and that's energy is now traveling to the west coast. specifically for the bay area, what will this mean? dangerous waves saturday and sunday. we're looking at waves that could be as high as 7 to 10 feet. and on top of that long duration swells that could last anywhere from 15 to 17 seconds. again, with temperatures expected in the 70s, if you're headed to the coastline this weekend, watch out for dangerous wa
