metro is working with the manufacturer new flyer to retrofit the energy storage system on the buses to eliminate the problem. in extreme cases metro says the battery overheated causing smoke and minor damage inside the engine. this comes months after fox 5 reported a rise in engine failures on metro's diesel electric hybrid buses made by the same company. metro reported the problem in june after seeing an increase in breakdowns in those buses and a decrease in reliability. problems with the cooling system were blamed for the engine failures and metro said it was working with new flyer to resolve the problem. despite this metro says its hybrid buses are safe and continue to outperform diesel only buses. the newest hybrids will stay in service. metro says they are safe, but it will step up inspections until the retrofitting is complete in may. >>> meantime the bus drivers union in montgomery county filing an official grievance after five ride-on buses caught fire in recent years. laura evans is everywhere at 11:00. >> the union this wants two bus models taken out of circulation immediate
