fremont boulevard. kpix 5 reporter len ramirez is live tonight. >> reporter: within the last hour fremont police held a news conference about the only thing they would confirm is the suspect fired upon the officers before the officers returned fire, killing him. beyond that they had little to say, citing on going investigation in the very early stages. it began at this seven/11, a witness flagged down an officer report agfight between two men inside the store, one flashing a gun. the parks officer approached a parked car with several people inside and called fremont pd for back up. >> the officer asked for expedited cover, which basically means get there now. >> reporter: when fremont officers arrived, a suspect bolted across the street to an alley behind the wal greens, luis hernandez heard police searching. >> they kept asking the subject to come out and he wouldn't respond. >> reporter: officers say they found the man hiding on top of a u-haul truck and first did respond to commands. >> sure enough a individual then stands up from the top of the u-haul truck and puts his hands up. >> reporter: a lawy

this is the wall green's shopping center. this is where fremont police officers gave chase after they say a suspect tried to get away late last night just before midnight. details still sketchy here coming out of the scene. it all started just before midnight when an east bay regional parks police officer had a confrontation with a car full of people at a 7-eleven. for an unknown reason at this point, the parks police officer called for emergency backup, saying there was a gun involved. when fremont police arrived on scene, they say a man was trying to get away. they gave chase, even bringing in a helicopter to help in the search. for an unknown reason, at least one police officer fired at the suspect, killing him. we're still trying to determine if the suspect fired at the officers first or if he even had a gun. the sergeant on scene here says that it's undetermined what prompted his officers to discharge their gun. none of the officers was injured and police say at least one of the other people who stayed in the car was taken in to police headqu
