no one can build a bridge over the golden gate because of insurmountable difficulties. that was what was said about it at the time. 75 years ago, at the completion of the international orange marble, strauss would probably right, at last, the mighty task is done. 75 years later, we recall the words of that same poem he wrote. launched the midst of a thousand hopes and fears, and damned thousand hostile sneers, yet never its course has strayed. and here we are today, 75 years later. it is a point of personal privilege for many of us here to remember the 50th anniversary. remember that? what a crowd we all remember the unexpected crowd that showed up to walk across the bridge. a little different from the inauguration. in the 25 years since, i have had the privilege in congress to work with so many of you here. certainly, janet is relentless and persisted in her advocacy for this bridge. appropriately, in the bridge international orange, that is how she comes into congress to remind us of what our challenges and responsibilities are. this is a bridge that we always want to

help us interpret the direction in which the city reinvents itself in its built form, the master plan for golden gate park has been devised to help us interpret and understand how to take this particular park into the future. i i do believe that the intensification of the beach chalet as proposed in this particular project, although modified to the way that it was presented today and i appreciate that, is still too intense, partially because the use of lighting from dusk until 10:00 at night, and i do believe that astroturf, for all the reasons that were described, for health and environmental reasons, is an inappropriate response to that natural setting. there are many studies. i am not sure that i can properly tied them to astroturf and the particular form that you have tied them to this facility, but the rubber particles that are found in the environment are more and more found in the food chain of wildlife. and that is of great concern, because that creates a breakdown and environmental impact, the effects of which have not been fully analyzed. this is both in water as well as a land. in land, pl

i am glad you reminded me that my father was on the golden gate bridge authority. growing up as kids, we had a free pass. every time we went across the bridge, we never had to pay the toll. i thought that was a little unreasonable. that is when i got my first notion of political reform. [applause] -- [laughter] in those days, if you were on the bridge authority, you got a free pass to cross the bridge. we have lost a few of those good perks that stimulated a lot of good work. by the way, my sister cynthia, she walked across the bridge the first day. this week in, we celebrated the 75th anniversary of our golden gate bridge. t the comment on what it meant to me. i said to a number of you in the media that one of the reasons that it is not just a great engineering marvel for our country, but it has been a symbol for many people around the world to come to san francisco, and this is just one of those neighborhoods among many where people establish themselves and created little saigon, and i have been very proud to work with all of these small businesses and residents of the tenderloin community and this area for years. mohammed nuru and i spent many years of walking up the street trying to figure out how to improve it. in between our noodles and our sandwiches, we were able to figure out a few things with the neighbors. by golly, if you look at this today and compare it to five years ago, it is reflected now so much private investment. people are taking their own risks as well as investing in their own neighborhoods. and we started -- a thing two years ago we put these pillars in that the bequest of the neig

the foundation and though you does not mention the golden gate park at all -- mou does not mention the golden gate park at all. this has not been done before the beach chalet sote. -- site. it is part of the mou and is required to use on used funds to be carried forward to the next fiscal year. we have time to do the right thing with an alternative. another point i wantwith the co- the product is inconsistent with the local coastal plan, because it fails to protect the naturalist the quality of the park, and because it will have negative effects on other resources in coastal zones but said the project boundaries. this point is definitely appealable to the california coastal commission. you need to hear that. please do not approve this permit. thank you for your time, and hang in there. >> please do not certify the eir. i am beth lewis. it is flawed. it is inadequate. the eir claims the only adverse effect is it will impair the historical significance of a very small portion of the park. i really do not think that cutting down 55 trees and paving over 7 acres near a beautiful ocean, ess

the golden gate park facility should be made accessible to all users. one of the key elements of this proposed project is to make open spaces accessible to people of all means and abilities and to increase accessibility, which is consistent to the general plan. finally, the golden gate park master plan, while not in the general plan, there is an outline suggesting what should be in the plan, and that outline does provide conflicting policy direction for facilities such as the soccer fields. again, within the golden gate park subsection, the outline suggests that we should have recreational facilities, the recreational facilities are considered essential resources in golden gate park, and it emphasizes the role of recreational facilities. at the same time, it emphasizes that the naturalistic landscapes should be protected and renewed within the bounds of its character. it also states that vehicle traffic should be minimized. finally, the primary function of the part is to serve the recreational needs of all san franciscans. the implications include that t
