the gavel, however, was not returned to newt gingrich. the gavel was sent to us. it's right here. order during unusually contentious staff meetings. as for the 5,000, dawn used it to open a shelter for dogs called newt's nook. newt gingrich didn't return our calls but he told the dallas morning news, "we have a firm that scans for entrepreneurs and small businesses. the way it was listed, it looked like it was a very successful restaurant." it is. that didn't come to our attention until later and we felt it wasn't a good representation for our award. he almost gave an award to a strip club in exchange for $5,000 and that's not an establishment that gingrich wants to be seen giving fake awards to in exchange for $5,000. end of story, right? not so much. turns out this week dawn risos, the owner of the lodge, got another fundraising scam letter from newt gingrich with another super-tempting offer and, of course, another solicitation for money. here's the money she received this week. it refers to ms. risos as a key member of the american solutions family of supporters and notifies h

people are clapping and the judge is pounding on the gavel. the judge says all right. all right. there is a lot of interest here. we're going to take 15-minute break and we're going to come back and i'll figure out what to do. 15 minutes later, by the way in the break everybody is coming up to steve and they are like, you know, shaking his hand and begging him to represent them. so, so, so she comes back and puts up on a microphone and for the rest of the day everybody could hear but i went back to that court the next day and steve was gone and so was the microphone. i went back to the court for weeks on end for the next five years because i wrote a whole chapter about this community and there was never another microphone and there was always that huddle. that huddle is what my book is about. it is about people who work in the system who become more attached to each other than they are to the jobs that they are supposed to be doing. and what they do is they lose a sense of what it is that is important and who it is that they are supposed to be protecting and instead, the justice

it is easy to be behind the gavel of the commission in san francisco when it is a full commission. we have been laboring a bit under an empty seat, i should say. we are busy. we are probably, to my knowledge, the only commission that meets weekly, and long hours, as you referred to before. each of you, commenting on previous items before you, used terms like community involvement. that describes rodney fong. he and i share something in that our grandmothers were both born in the city, in the mid-late 1800's. that becomes important, more important than i thought when i was on the commission. you bring a history of the city and you understand the changes because of that that have occurred in the past, and that will probably continue to occur in the future. that impacts a lot of the plan and we do. he has a background in the tourist industry, which is absolutely essential to san francisco, and currently, i am the only person on the planning commission that really understands neighborhood commercial districts. these are important. we deal with them constantly. i believe he brings that

i'm sorry to push you on this but one of your big issues is you believe when john boehner has the gavelk of january, the number one issue on the table is repealing the health care law that was signed into law several months ago. that is something that we have heard from many republicans during the campaign, and since then, over the past month and a half. that is not an easy thing to do. how can you do it? >> the sequence of of this -- first, if we don't fix the tax brackets, i hope hr1 is fix the tax brackets but aside from that if we get over this hurdle this week or next then we address the repeal of obamacare, i believe, and i believe that leadership is consistent with me on this that we should bring a bill that's a clean repeal, a stand alone repeal of obamacare, send it to the senate and get them working on the repeal of obamacare. we know the president would veto that when it gets to his test but we need a test vote so we know people, where they stand and march through the appropriations bills, every one of them, putting language in them that prohibits the funds being appropriated

how many of you can sit at home and watch the robert blake trial from gavel-to-gavel, even if it is televised when the camera is not present, you must rely on the boarding -- the reporting. i have had many instances where i was reporting on a trial and i will listen to my colleague on my right and left and wondered if they had been in the same courtroom that i was in. their sense of what happened in that room was very different from my own. i often feel that they're pro- prosecution bias is present. there is an assumption that they must have done something wrong or they would not have been charged in first place. maybe that is human nature, but it certainly makes its way into reporting. i also think in our last 15, 20 years of political context, because of the wave of crime, violence, and we can even talk about the entertainment medium, there has been a preference for "law and order" and "csi" type of programming that preferred the victim. back in the 1970's we had more of a liberal bias. i think the pendulum is shifting in the other direction. there was a show called "raising the bar" which
