i think the majority of greensboro residents had never heard of the cwp. they did not know that they were unionizing -- there were unionizing activities going on and they couldn't have found the location of the shootings without a map. i think the city response -- again, we have to talk in segments -- the official response from the mayor and from any other government spokesman was outraged. these were outsiders who came in to greensboro. they made this terrible thing happened. they provoked the violence. they would suffer the consequences. they denied that greensboro had in any way have any fault in this instance, that the police had done nothing wrong, that there was a lot of confusion about when the parade was to start and where it was to start. i think the media also, except for the television coverage that was there, the media also began an automatic defense of the city . this couldn't have happened here. we did nothing to cause it. the court cases that was on -- re resulted from this, the first was a murder trial. it was the murder of five people. the

murphy originally loaned the collection to the greensboro historical museum and it was his intention to give it to the museum on his death. it was willed to the museum in 2003 and now it's part of our permanent collection. we are starting with a piece that was made by tarpley. this is a piece that was manufactured here. it was one of the most rare and unique pieces in the collection. you can see stamped on here, jeremiah tarpley was the gentleman who applied and received a patent for this design. it was his idea for the design of the rifle in combination with an existing firm was making sewing machines in greensboro that also resulted in the manufacture of this piece. this is number 380, the serial number. it is unusual and its appearance. it is missing a wooden for stock. every other rifle or longer manufactured has a piece of wood that goes along here, and this particular design omitted that. that was one of the design flaws. it got too hot to handle. they weren't very user-friendly. being said, few of these were made, less than 200, and today less than 20 are known to be in existen

the road, traveling to u.s. cities to learn about their history and literary life. this weekend we have partnered with time warner cable for a visit to greensboronorth carolina. >> after months of cleaning the house of charles halpern, who had been given that task went on one more walk-through. in the attic he saw an envelope with a gray seal on it and walked over. it was in 1832 document. he removed a single mail from a panel in an upstairs attic room and discovered a trunk and books and poetry stuffed under the eaves. this was this treasure of dolly madison's things. we have had this store available to the public, different items from time to time, but try to include her life story from her birth in guilford county to her death in 1849. some of the items we currently have on display are carved ivory calling card case that has a karting closed with dolly's signature, as well as that of her name, anna, a perfume bottle, and a pair of silk slippers that have tiny ribbons the tie across the arch of her foot. the two dresses are the reproduction of a silk peach down that she wore and a red velvet gown, and there is also a legend that now accompani
