gayle: the confrontation that occurred in greensboro in 1979 is extremely complex, with many -- fectivesnd tax -- fax acts to consider. the communist workers party, which had formally been a different organization, had arranged a parade in greensboro to try to unite blacks and people who might be union members. they engaged with the ku klux , invited them to the parade . this was confrontational from the outset. members were gathering with neighborhood residents around 11:00 in the morning for the parade to kick off at noon. before that could happen, a caravan of klan members, nine cars, arrived and before uniform police could come, violence began. demonstrators actually hit the caravan cars. memberspoint, the clan pulled out weapons and began to shoot into the air. wasnext thing to happen some of the communist protesters and pulled out a handguns fired. and then the clan went to a car that was loaded with rifles, pulled them out, and in the next 88 seconds, five people were killed and twice that number were wounded. came after the fact. they did begin to arrest cwp klanrs, all of the ku

the city of greensboro is named for nathanael greene. we have this wonderful statue behind me of general greene on the horse at the time of the revolutionary war. general greene was one of the major heroes of the revolutionary war. -- his conduct in the war was exemplary. he was able to put men in the field and keep them into the field, and the militia saw the general greene was not going to sacrifice their lives meaninglessly. hadowing the war, greene not only the respect of the generals and politicians, but the respect of all the common militia soldiers involved in the war. general greene stopped what would have been a total british victory in the south. general greene was the month -- one man washington could trust to keep the army alive and in the field, and have washington's confidence, and he proved his worth in the southern campaign. >>
