. >> breaking news, you are looking at the aftermath of a deadly train crash in hoboken, new jersey. a new jersey transit commuter train packed with people, slammed into the terminal during the morning rush. we know one person dead, there are reports up to three could have been killed. more than 100 others were hurt. thanks for joining us, i'm brooke thomas. >> i'm jim donovan. hoboken train station sits directly across the hud somebody river from new york city. rail service has been suspended into and out of hoboken station. authorities say train number 1614 left spring valley new york just before 7:30 this morning. now, that's in rock lands county just north of the new jersey border. a little more than an hour late their train plowed through a platform and into a reception area when it reached the ends of the line. several eyewitnesses have reported that the train never slowed down as it entered the terminal. >> when we felt the train slamming or sliding into the station we weren't necessarily -- we just wanted to make sure everyone would could help was standing on their feet or wou

injured when the train barrelled in the hoboken station. the station part of the new jersey transit system and one of the busiest transit hubs in the nation. it was in the end of the line and twisted wreckage landing inside of the waiting area of the passenger station. the national transportation safety board is investigating. witnesses on and off of the train said it pulled in at full speed. >> it was just initially a horrendous exploding noise and concrete, dust and electrical wires and a train flying into the depo. i couldn't believe what i was seeing. >> rick was among the first reporters on the scene. he joins us live with the latest. >> john, new jersey trandzit is one of the largest transportation system and this hoboken terminal one of the busiest stations and 15000 people boarding trains. it was transit 1614 out of spring valley, new york. it left 7:20 and arrived at 8:45 with estimated 250 people on board. it came in way too fast near top speed and crashed over bumper and into a concrete wall. some say it flew 40 feet in the air sm

a live picture on the ground in hoboken. some of the aforementioned hundreds of firstsonders on the scene there, you could see fire and rescue. on the right side of your screen, also a live picture. a number of reporters this morning telling us that they have seen ambulances and fire trucks and police cars racing to the scene all morning. you see some of the folks gathered there. chris, i don't know if you were able to get this from that update, do we know whether there are people who are still trapped on that train or folks who are still trapped in the rubble of the platform? >> we did ask that question. she wouldn't answer specifically if there were any fatalities on the scene or if there was anybody still trapped. i do know that the first responders are inside the terminal. they're checking to make sure that the rest of the structure is still safe. but they're not letting anybody in within a couple thousand feet from the actual train station at the moment. >> chris essner, producer here at nbc news. roughly a block away fr

the controls. and then when it leaves hoboken, they swap. and the engineer will jump into the actual engine, where everybody would consider to see a train. in hoboken, that cab is what comes into the terminal, not the actual engine. the engine's on the other side pushing the train. when it leaves, it will pull the train out of the station. >> albert gill, a former train conductor. appreciate your insights and expertise on this. i want to quickly say we're standing by for two news conferences. one from the national transportation board which will take a lead role in the investigation. also one at the jersey medical center. that's the regional trauma center where those who were most seriously injured in this horrific train crash were brought. want to bring in some experts. i'm joined by the former managing director of the national transportation safety board. former inspector general at the u.s. department of transportation, mary skiavo. what do your investigative instincts tell you? what's question number one? >> well, we've seen this before,

this is the end of the line in hoboken. e says it looks like he came in and went through the bumper postal the end of the rail or the end of the line as you would know it. at that point the train jumped up and went over the platform and into the office. the concern would be for anyone that was on that platform or in that office. it's right now -- it was at the time of the crash rush hour so there would be lots of people on the train. the people inside the train could be quite injured, but that's not what we would be looking for the worst of it. bill: abc news reports more than 100 injured, multiple passengers trapped. if that's the case, we'll wait to see whether the first responders can access them and if they are trapped. how do you get them free. 9:46 in hoboken, new jersey, what commuter train barreling into the train station on the new jersey side of the track during the morning rush hour. no word so far on the extent of the injuries. but there are various reports suggesting there are dozens if not more. rick leventhal

so it was the last stop, hoboken. but those i've talked to that take this train say that the train immediately would go back into new jersey. so at that point, emergency vehicles came on scene. when i arrived here early on, there were so many firefighting units. victims transported to the hospital. the governor chris christie said everyone from the train has now been transported to a hospital if they need that. so no one is left on the train at this point. as you said, 74 injured now. they're saying one fatality at this point. the saddest thing of all, the engineer of that train we do understand was unresponsive when they got to him and transported him to a local trauma center. >> there are some indications that the terminal -- that the building, the terminal building, might not necessarily be stable right now given the train crashing right into it. could it still collapse? >> well, i guess anything is possible. i will tell you i see so many firefighters that are just standing outside of the train station. they're just

this video shows the train headed hoboken where thousands of commuters pass through every morning. >> it usually slows down. i looked at >> reporter: the train carrying 250 people was pulling into track 5 this morning. passengers say the train did not slow down as it approached the station. >> he was coming into the station faster than normal. usually it crawls when it comes into the station. >> this train came in at a high and crashed through all t barriers, bringing it right to the interior wall of the hoboken terminal. >> reporter: the new jersey governor taking a break from the trump campaign was on the scene. mindful that it's early, any preliminary ideas? >> we know the train came in toochz. the question is why. was it human error? was there a medical condition? was there a failure? we don't know. >> reporter: the train engineer, a 48-year-old, was treated for injuries and released. he is said to be with investigators. it's a dead end station must slow to 10 miles per hour before entering the straight away into the station. this train may have been traveling as fast as 30 miles

the hoboken train station looked like this, a disaster zone, after the new jersey transit train plowed through the bumper of the track and then slammed in the platform. according to reports, passengers attempted to smash windows in order to exit exit the train. one person was killed by fallen debris. more than 100 others were injury. a majority were hospitalized. witnesses say they were stunned by the sound of the crash. they didn't know what was going on. soon they heard screamed and saw the aftermath. >> i observed train coming in high rate of speed, went over the bumper block and through the a air and traveled about another 40 feet and came to a rest, when it hit the wall of the waiting room. >> lights went out and just didn't stop and people were falling over, who were standing, and then the roof came down. the roof of the train just popped down. >> it looked like something out of the movie, you know, just all that kind of wreckage, you don't really think it is possible until it happens. >> we will be pulling the event recorder from the the event recorder, we hepp to get informatio

we're looking at the wreckage. hoboken station has some, you know, very old visible work with the rivets in it and all the construction looks very dated. almost vintage by this point. the wooden waiting room entrances, if anyone's gone through there, spent anytime at all, it's kind of iconic. >> it is. it is. it's definitely historical. it's beautiful. they haven't done any work on it besides touch-ups but after this tragedy, i'm not sure how it's going to look after the reconstruction. it's probably going to take forever. i don't even know. but the entire structure itself is completely damaged and it's unfortunate, but, you know, there needs to be upgrades as far as what exactly happened, how this happened. nobody has any idea. literally, at this point. i'm glad some people on the train were okay and able to see some people get off, but, you know, it's definitely a tragedy and it's sad to see. >> yeah. we're looking at these pictures. we see running water while it was raining this morning, a lot of this is from pipes burs

we are about just across from the hoboken terminal. now you see those two trains? obviously, not moving. imagine train 1614 just inside of that, barreling into to the final 100, 130 yards of the hoboken terminal, all the way down until you can see where that sort of reddish, brownish building is. that is actually where the track ends and the train jumped the barrier and into the platform area. you see that white pipe? there and just underneath that, that is where the train engines are and where the investigators will be focusing. a couple of concerns they have. one is the structural integrity of the building. there was some water damage after the crash. they have to be careful moving around in there. investigators also need that roof damage, they need to actually have that roof removed before they can get to parts of the train that they need to look at. there is a thought that the train was moving as fast as 30 as it moved in here. trains of course shouldn't be going any faster than 10 miles per hour. next 7 to 10 days, investigators will be here trying to figure it
