the way. so this year you're calling on hp to be the turnaround stock for 2013. an, i have to say, look, it's been a disastrous few years for hp, the pc sales dwindling, revenue is flat, declining profits, increased debt, exposure to europe, by the way, do we need to mention the purchase of autonomy. i could go on and on. what on earth do you like about hp? >> well, hp has several things going for it both in the short-term and in the longer term, in the short-term the fact that it's down so much probably means we will see is a pop early in the year because there's been so much selling late in the year, the tax losses, portfolio window dressing that all stops january 1st and when that pressure is gone, then the stock may rise. longer term, it will take a while, but they've got a lot of the things that we look for in a turnaround situation. they have a solid business. they've got well-known brands. they've got decent balance sheet. and they have new management, which you often have to have for a turnaround. ashley: interesting. talking of management, meg whitman a v

the defense. this week, autonomy founder mike lynch launched a website addressing allegations of accounting fraud by hewlett- packard. hewllet recently accused autonomy executives of inflating revenues prior to hpqcuring the company last year. a statement on the website reads "the former management team of autonomy strongly rejects the accusations made by h-p." general motors is putting the brakes on the production of some cars and trucks. according to the wall street journal, the automaker has an overload of unsold cars and trucks. over the holidays, gm plans a 3-week shutdown at its lordstown, ohio, plant, where the chevy cruze is built. shutdowns may happen at another factory as well. meanwhile, ford is increasing production by 11% next year. disney fans will soon have new choices to add to their netflix queue. disney plans to sell the rights to some of its new movies to netflix. starting next year, netflix users will be able to watch disney releases at home shortly after the movies hit theaters. netflix stock surged 8% on the news. meanwhile, there's a surge in c- notes. the 100-dollar bill is considered the preferred method of payment for drug deals, arms sales and tax evasion transactions

and mark kirk became the ceo of hp again? >> are you telling me you would buy this stock right sneer. >> yeah, i would buy right here. >> okay. and chesapeake energy shares plummeting this year. jp, this is one of the stocks we talked a lot about several months ago when it was in the news almost every day because of aubrey mccollege don and questions there. what's going to happen in 2013? >> this is a classic example of the old adage, take your losses quickly and sell on controversy. so in this case you have the board investigating the ceo, you have hundreds of millions of dollars in loans, you have all kinds of issues here. the smartest thing to have done was to walk away. for next year it is a little different and becomes a headline-driven stock. obviously, this is not a fast-growing company and nasdaq stocks on the whole are not great, but if a transaction takes place, if somebody like chevron decides they want a big natural gas deal, they can do a deal this size. so it's not something you want to be short but you really ha

the company? >> well, i am very optimistic about meg whitman and hp. what's the uncertain? well understood. leo, obviously, made a big mistake and i think the proper due diligence, it looks like it was done with the investment bankers in to sets of premier auditing firms. they clearly have fraud in there and the whistleblower, who i'm happy is still employed by hp was somebody who was a direct report to the ceo that was terminated of autonomy. >> was there $5 billion in fraud there? it want an $8.3 billion write-down. they didn't call it fraud, but they called it financial maneuvering. was there fraud there? >> it certainly looks like fraud. and you're wondering why is the ceo out there speaking. like governor blew gagojevich. his lawyers couldn't have been in favor of him being so public right now. but you take a look at the different business units. meg whitman is in a complicated legacy. but product line after product line, they've been investing a lot of the cash flow that they have back in the business. the business has been starved for cap ex investments for a while.

so it seems as though dell is a little bit more advanced in the thinking than hp is. ultra books. ever looked at one? >> i haven't looked at one. >> okay. they about 1200 bucks. that's the ability to move -- the profit margins on it are phenomenal. what's the ability to move from the pc to the tablet. now, it's higher -- >> let me make a last word. >> you did your homework this morning, i like that. but here's the reality. we only have a certain amount of capital to deploy. why wouldn't you buy an apple? why would you put it into dell? i think the nicest thing that can happen, dell earns 14%, a bunch of cash, everyone talking about special dividends. a nice christmas present. and then move on from there. putting money -- just doesn't make any sense. >> one reason why. and don't take this the wrong way, it's because i do my homework all of the time, not just today and i've done my homework on dell for five years. and i've recognized -- i bought it last week in the context of what potentially could be yahoo!. that's why i did it last week, doing the homework, and recognizing that co
