the key number to watch is the data center business and the challenges intel is seeing there. we will be breaking down all the numbers, but first i want to hear from stacy smith, the intel cfo. stacy: relative to the second quarter, we came in right online. we did little better in terms of profit for our expectations. when you dissect the revenue, , data market was stronger center was in line and it was offset by memory and other things. wecific to the pc category, think there was less of an inventory burn, but we continue to be cautious as we go into the back half of the year. emily: where do you see the bright spot? do you see improvement in the u.s. or does it spread abroad? stacy: the driver right now is what is going on in the cloud and the data center and we are poised for a strong second half. we have insight into what cloud customers are looking to purchase and we have new customers coming in and technology that would allow them to buy a richer mix of products. what we have seen is the same as we have seen in the last six months -- mature markets are doing relatively be

the other. but i don't think this is a disastrous quarter for intel. ally if they can answer the questions about margins. >> all right. so again, we will wait for stacy smith, cfo of intel to join us here. let me just ask you, guy, with the vix at one-year low would you buy volatility yet? are you ready there? >> terrifying, right? if you are looking for one booing oo man in this whole thing is the fact that the vix is dead around the 12 1/2, $13 level. if you look off the last couple years is levels that the market has sold off from. in other words the vix bottoms out around the levels. market sales off and you see it move to the upside in the vix. i'm shocked at level of complacency people have in the level of refinement we find ourselves in. but the market continues it ride higher. i think every dip is an opportunity without doubt but that's emboldened people to the point where they no longer think they need insurance in the form of the vix. to be honest, i think they might be making a huge mistake. >> first of all, we are below 12 on the vix. two da

let's trade intel and the chip stocks. of course we've also got qualcomm tonight. >> this stock was down a lot more an hour or so ago when they reported in terms of intel. tim pointed this out earlier in the week and i think it's worth repeating. we're bumping up against levels we last saw at the end of the 2014. whether or not that's interesting or not, we'll see. it's something to keep in mind. i think the quarter was fine, valuation is reasonable and dividend is great. but like cisco has now proven itself to the upside breaking 30.5, i think intel has to prove itself. >> i think it's data center and things where people have tried to be most excited. those are the places where they have missed the most today. there's nothing awful here but it gets to a place where think about where sentiment has changed towards the chips and the entire semis to where it is now. i don't think the arm deal should be implying a different multiple on the entire sector. this is a company that gets 90% of its business from pc and server. they'r

over the intel, thank you eric johnson from the street. intel's data center groups i have to read this, which supplies server cpus, among other things has long been trumpeted as the growth engine because pc sales have been weak. rev growth 5% annually, at $4 billion. last quarter was 9%. 15% comp at annual growth what they're looking for. they will not be able to do it. remarkable slowdown. >> what's going on? >> two businesses. they give you the units for the cloud. okay. so say an amazon web service, microsoft. but they make the on premise boxes which you don't -- which are not cloud and this whole shift to the cloud that we were talking about yesterday, it leaves intel behind on the boxes in your own building, and -- but puts them in the cloud. >> right. >> but the cloud isn't being adopted fast enough versus what i think they're losing on the premises. what i felt was the bright spot on the quarter. >> tell me. >> other than altera, that pcs, remember, pcs -- >> yesterday you mentioned it in the microsoft call. they mentioned pcs have n

the is almost as bad as last quarter, which was not seen a very strong. intel said we will benefit from the cloud i being a data center, but data center growth is now below 5% on the year over year basis, and that is not good news. joe: intel says it remains cautious on the pc market. and this is a legacy business, and no one is surprised that that business is not thriving. how much is that dragging them down, and how well has intel done ultimately to diversify away from it? cory: intel has done amazing things. they saw it happening with the pc, they started building and internet of things, they're ramping up and cutting costs and cutting prices and raising efficiency of chips to read in the meantime, they have this pc business that peaked in 2011 and continues to be in decline. what they did initially was gain market shares. no moree is really market share for them to win in that arena. and you're seeing the results in terms of market share, they cannot compete there anymore. as a result, the contraction of business hurting them. hopefully servers will make up

using the data center chips for intel, and those are the most profitable chips. 49% margins.rating margins over the last year, and yet, that is in this is growing more and more slowly -- that business is growing more and more slowly. looking forreally in this business is growth in servers while maintaining those high operating margins. areoperating margins margins any business would kill for. we're looking for growth in the server business. scarlet: of course, the one number, the one forecast possibility they do give his gross margins, so we will be looking closely at that number. david: i want to pull up a chart looking at the ticketing landscape. looking at stubhave -- stubhub biting on the heels of ticket master. there has been a lot of talk about it ebay might be interested in spinning it off. tell me what you think the likelihood might be. cory: i'm blaming them for one of the only warriors losses this year. it is a very interesting business because they know so much about what consumers do and when they do it. david: great talking to you. as always. forlet: that does it

>> i like the intel story. they are downplaying the pc market. they could be an improving pc trend or. i like the fact that they are downplaying expectations. there are some concerns that growth may be slowing, it's not as high as people wanted to be. this is a very lumpy business. it's a terribly inconsistent business. they are doing a lot of the line. when you have that double of concentration, particularly in the u.s., you're going to get some lumpiness. the worst half is below the 10% mark. the second half is well above the 10% art. you'll get a full year distribution of revenue. it's not a 15% number. margins are high. year look forward to the 2016. the data center is improving. there is high confidence there. if the u.s. is improving and inventory cuts are moderating, shockingly i might say pcs may return to low declines or even growth. we could see some terrific headway made by intel. it is uniquely situated in the market. emily: pandora is out with earnings this week. we will talk to tim westergren. elon musk talks about his master plan.

the pc market might be bottoming out, improving -- it was reported earlier this year the decline was slowing down. intel on the health of the pc market. the decline of the pc market has hurt the business. now they are pivoting away from the business and focusing on non-see businesses, however, the business still depends greatly on the health of this market. we will be talking to them about if they see anything signs in particular that the market is coming back. then there will be two more new things. they need to show growth and non-pc businesses. number one, the cloud. they have been focusing on the cloud business. qualcomm.d to -- that qualcomm may be losing a chunk of business. many analysts believe apple is giving that business to intel. intel has not confirmed this. they aredid say assuming one of the large customers will be giving a shot competitor, and this would be a huge win for intel. they have been struggling for so long to whether the transition to mobile. we'll be looking for any indication that that is indeed happening, how big the wing would actually be at, indeed, apple is giving orders
