the chair recognizes mr. braley of iowa for five minutes. mr. braley: thank you, mr. speaker. there are 435 members of the house of representatives. we come from all over the country. and every one of us encounters people from the towns and cities and rural parts of our district that inspire us through the heroic action that they exhibit in every day of their lifes. i rise this morning to talk about one of those heroic people that i've known for 35 years. her name is bev renz, and i met her when i was working with her husband at a grain elevator in the small town of hartwick, iowa. i later got to know her better playing softball for a team called the front street tap in iowa. her voice was always the loudest on the field because that's the kind of person she is. she is passionate, she is fear in our dedication to our friends and she has devoted her entire life to making her community, her state, and her country a better place for all americans. bev recently had a curveball thrown at her, when she was diagnosed with a.l.s., lou gehrig's disease. bev has always taken life head on

subcommittee on appropriations, the gentleman from iowa, mr. latham. the chair: the gentleman yields one minute to the gentleman from iowa. mr. latham: i thank the gentleman from kentucky and, mr. speaker, i just maybe respond a little bit to what the gentleman from massachusetts just said. the fact of the matter is there will not be a veteran -- homeless vet that will not get a voucher. the fact of the matter is there are 30,000 vouchers available today, only 19,000 of those have been used. there are 11,000 vouchers waiting and the problem basically is what the department , with h.u.d. and v.a., trying to write the rules to actually get these people, the vouchers -- piece theme the vouchers they need. so any characterization that we're putting vets out in the cold is absolutely untrue. you can have your opinion but the facts speak for themselves. now also we're not reducing any such section 8 vouchers. they will remain. no one is going to be put out anywhere. we maintain those programs for those folks and to characterize it any way differently is simpl

the first contest to determine who will take on president obama, the iowa caucuses less than a year away. and jon karl reports, we're seeing the first official moves to enter the race. >> reporter: president gingrich? looks like he'll try. sources close to the former house speaker tell abc news, he's likely to take the first steps towards a presidential run within two weeks. and sources close to former governors mitt romney and tim pawlenty, say they are almost virtually certain to run as well. and jon huntsman, the congressman president obama named ambassador to china, tells abc news, he's strongly leading towards a run. and is already planning, quote, an aggressive campaign. already, the early primary and caucus states of iowa, new hampshire, south carolina and nevada have been invaded by an army of presidential wannabes who are testing the waters. in the field of republican presidential candidates, there are the big names. gingrich and romney. mike huckabee. and, of course, sarah palin. the contenders, not as famous, but with experience and resources. mississippi governor haley barbou

you may remember the exact percentage that he got in the iowa. did not translate into major victories in primary after primary. it did not translate into victories. we will see if 2012 is different. but the amount of attention and money he had could have translated into something less time and did not. host: there is up peace posted online at the politico. rick santorum touched off of media firestone that. to denigrate sarah palin and her response was swift and unforgiving. guest: comments by rick santorum now considering a bid for the republican nomination. his essential message was sarah palin was skipping cpac so that chicago make money, making speeches and other financial ventures. there was some blood back pretty quickly about that. he came in for a lot of criticism. he took it that that was not what he meant. he went after political by name. by the video tape, it seems that what he was implying. he was the first likely presidential candidate to really criticize sarah palin. he backpedaled on it, but some people think he would've been better

the american people. at this time i yield five minutes to my good friend from iowa, mr. king. the chair: the gentleman from iowa voiced for five minutes. mr. king: thank you, mr. chairman. mr. chairman, i thank the chairman of the subcommittee of appropriations on h.h.s., congressman rehberg, for yielding. and want to declare my support for this amendment and i think he's happy if i refer to it as the rehberg amendment. i want to also thank danny rehberg for the work he's done on this. america will never know, mr. chairman, how much work went into crafting this amendment, to get this fix that does a little bit to take us down the road and, boy, it is important to me to see $100 million cut out of the resources that would be used to implement obamacare. and, mr. chairman, i'm also very confident in declaring it to be obamacare. i listen to president obama address it as obamacare on february 25 of last year at the blair house during the health care summit. i thought that was the source of the moniker, obamacare, was the president himself. and if anyone, you know, thinks otherwise
