i also thought i should read the code of iowa. i came to the education chapter in the code of iowa. i was reading through there and it said, each child in iowa shall receive a global, not- sexist, lti-cultural education. -- non-sexist multicultural education. that means all of the schools in the state would have acto teach multiculturalism. i have never been a fan of any of those things. [applause] i took out a bill draft request form to write a bill to strike all of that language out of there. i would get that drafted and get it filed. i thought, if i just strike the language out that calls for the global non-sexist multiculturalism. but i thought people would think i did not believe in evething. i wrote a bill to replace it. strike u the language about global non-sexist multiculturalism. each child would be taught bad the united states is -- would be taught that the united states is the greatest nation in the world based on free enterprise capitalism. what are the iowa caucuses? could see people in south carolina saying what are they doing? the convention was covered fully in the press throughout the country because it was very important. somebody in south carolina following an event in massachusetts knowing their future is tied up, nationalizing the event, it was profoundly exciting. it filled the newspapers. these conventions too where very different from the federal convention which was secret. they locked the door and didn't tell anyone and the delegates were told you can't see what is going on until we are done. convention was to act in the name of the people. you couldn't keep the people out. they were crushed to hear the debate. >> host: in the various states. it took two years? >> guest: it did not. on june, 1788, at the time new hampshire voted, both virginia and new york were also meeting, virginia voted soon thereafter and new york, and july and one more convention, north carolina voted in july not to ratify but the first amendment to the constitution, when the constitution finally in september of 1788, the con

when it comes to the evangelical crowd. iowa is a proven vote-getter and so forth. >> a story you posted a letter written by someone that's a long supporter and friend of the president. senator from colorado joined by democrats and republicans all member of the senate. what's their message? >> do something about the debt. their message is don't run away from the entitlement programs just because they're tough. the current debate, as you talked about in the last segment is on the current fiscal year budget. that's going to end at some point. it has to. but you know some time this year. they're going to have to confront this question of how to get control of the nation's soaring debt. the thing that will force them to confront that is this question of raising the debt ceiling which a lot of conservatives and tea party members appose. they don't want it. so, what these 64 senators hope is that they can use the pressure from that vote, that potential vote, to squeeze everyone in this debate and say, okay. we'll raise the debt ceilin

the presiding officer: the senator from iowa. mr. grassley: today we continue our efforts to lessen the burden of our overworked courts. we are, before the evening's out, going to confirm three more judicial nominees. two of the three nominees will -- we will vote on are for seats designated as judicial emergencies. with our actions today, it is only -- and we're only 22 days that the senate's been in session this year, the senate has confirmed 10 nominees. with these votes tonight, we will have confirmed 19% of president obama's judicial nominees submitted in this congress. this pace far exceeds the progress made at this point in the 108th congress, which was the beginning of the third year of president bush's presidency. at this point, the 108th congress had confirmed only four of 48 nominations sent to the senate, about 8% confirmation ray. our fast pace on the floor is matched by our rapid pace in committee. we held our third nominations hearing this past wednesday. we have now heard from 13 judicial nominees and reported 16 favor
