we didn't try to buy the iowa straw poll. continued to stay on message and get as much media exposure as we could, and it started to connect with the american people. so when we went from the straw poll, we then went to florida for the florida straw poll. mike, what a lot of people don't realize, i was out there with my message of simplicity relative to those issues even before i ever declared myself as a candidate. and what happened was that message started to connect with people, and that's when we started to build that momentum. now, jump to the florida straw poll and it was an upset victory. and that was because i wasn't supposed to win it, but i did. and that made a lot of people believers in my campaign. you know the history of the rest of it from there. for four weeks i was number one in the national polls. and we were doing just great until my character was assassinated deliberately because i was being too successful. >> were you surprised, herman, were you surprised at the intensity of attacks that came against you an

the state of iowa for example enacts a mandate that health insurance drug plans in iowa cover contraception. it's the republican legislature in iowa that does this. they overwhelmingly back a contraceptive coverage mandate in iowa and there are no exemptions for religious employers of any kind even churches in iowa must cover contraception in their health insurance prescription drug plans, right? so say the republicans in the year 2000. in arizona, same deal. they exempted churches themselves but not church affiliated institutions like universities and hospitals. a republican introduces that in arizona and passes through the legislature and signed into law in arizona by a catholic and republican governor. in new york state, a mandate that insurance plans have to cover birth controls not only passes but gets a bunch of support by republicans in the legislature. new york's republican governor george pataki signs it. by 2005, news made its way to mike huckabee in arkansas. arkansas under mike huckabee passes a law to require health insurance drug policy to cover contraception. like in arizona

supreme court justices were removed by the voters because they voted in a unanimous opinion based on the iowa constitution and the united states constitution on any issue involving gay rights. an anonymous political action committee comes in and takes one sentence out of an opinion of these judges who have been on the bench for years and years and years and defeats them, removes them at the polls and actually suggests that this is -- this was in the words of the organizer -- that this is a wake-up call to the judiciary. actually, it should be a wake-up call to all americans that we have a serious problem. we should not allow anonymous pac's to come into states ended the judges based on one sentence is opinion. they are going to have one, let them registered and let them decide -- let the people decide whether or not those judges acted in a way that was consistent with the constitution. as a result of that, one of the things i have asked, and this will be one of the most interesting debates in the next three weeks in toronto, is the judicial recusal coming before congress. i think the republic

first of all, the iowa chief justice testified that the concerns that some people have had with televised court proceedings have just not materialized in iowa, they have had cameras in the courtroom, all of their hearings are televised. they have been able to move forward as a court and they have seen it as a positive thing. and this is true of other courts in the land. the other piece about this, and i do have simply for the -- being a former prosecutor for eight years on the trial level, that you would not want to televise every trial, that there have been issues with that, that a judge should be able to make that kind of decision, but i think crew'you're in a whole different land when you're talking about the supreme court of our land, and that is the supreme court, you don't have the issue of witnesses somehow being affected by having a camera on or those types of concerns that you would have or that they would somehow act differently because the camera is on. and i would note that while some of the justs have taken a position against this, i think it was former just suitor that it wa
